I like to listen to more complex or abstract music that I normally woulden't be as receptive to when I'm sober. But all kinds of music are nice, being high just helps bring out all the little nuances.

I dont know how anyone can listed to metal (nu, thrash or otherwise) when blazed; its like trying to mount a large pointy square right on your temples....
Smae with rap, with some exception where the breaks a good sample from a bit of classic jazz or disco or something.

If you are going to listen to metal (at least for me) you have to have a perkier mental high as opposed to a heavy body stone. Otherwise it just irritates. Pantera is good stuff though. Metallica Black Album is the way to go for a "beginner" metalhead though. It's got enough "pop" in it, that its digestible, but its undeniably metal. I can see how if you were high and weren't into metal and someone put on some cannibal corpse how you could be really turned off by metal. It's an aquired taste.

Jazz is amazing when I'm blazed. In spite of all the stereotypes, I have more concentration for things like jazz when I'm high. I have lots of jazz albums, but I usually can't be bothered with them when I'm sober, just because I won't concentrate on them. Jazz takes a deeper level of attentivness (at least for me) to enjoy, and that usually only comes when I'm high.

Dick Justice
05-30-2005, 02:43 AM
Exactly, I can't listen to jazz in the background, it's like a waste of the music that's going on. Bitches Brew is an epic, John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra is a way of life, and Thelonious Monk has to be my own personal idol. (I play jazz piano on the side, getting pretty good, though I say it who shouldn't :D )

Any coltrane is amazing to me, especially giant steps. I really dig on canonball aderly too, because he has such a laid back style. I'm a Jazz saxophonist, so my collection reflects it. I def dig your taste though. And your comment about the wasted music is right on point.

Nicely put...i agree with the "beginner" metalhead comment. After the black album metallica sucked.I personally do not like cannibal corpse.I cannot stand the dudes voice, and i do not really like their music in general.Where i draw the line is cradle of filth,i like them. But i do have a few six feet under tracks...silent violence is a killer track.Iam more of the "drink some bourbon in the boondocks and get crazy" metal dude...not "the talk about fucking stiff dead bodies get crazy" dude.

I don't really dig on Cannibal Corpse either. I think they are no talent hacks playing on the no one is harder than us crowd which is bullshit. Metal is just another medium for muscians to be creative, not just a spectrum of heavy/not heavy. I own some cradle albums, but think they are largely garbage. I'm a pretty dark guy, so I get a good giggle out of the necro shit, but never really take it seriously. Since you are a get drunk and get crazy metal guy, you should check out death. They pretty much pionered death metal, they are super tight, and pretty fast, with some interesting ideas. I think they even had gene hogland drumming for an album or two.

Yea cannibal does feed off that no one is harder then us.Alot of people like them roun' here cuz alex webster(or whatever the bassists name is)grew up in my hometown and alot of us knew him.

If metallica is as far as you got in the metal scene again I can see your frustration. Thats like saying Nora Jones is as far as you got in the jazz scene. There are more interesting, more mature (well some of them anyways) metal groups. I'm not saying you WILL dig metal, but I can see why you were turned off if ALL you got to listen to was metallica.

I think my all time favorite smoking album has to be Phish's billy breathes. If you start it right as you peak the fisrt song "free" is super intense (I think its about being born). The rest of the ablum is awsome as well, with plenty of neat bass lines and its just classic phish.

Grateful Dead is my all time favorite to listen to when I'm high. Floyd, Zeppelin, Allmans, and Gov't Mule too, depending on my mood. I also like jazz a lot: Coltrane, Monk, Brubeck, etc. Some of the live Jerry Garcia stuff recorded around '74-'75 is great, its like a combination of the Dead and Jazz.

Also, anyone ever listen to Billie Holiday while high. It's totally old times but was like the original stoner music. Billie was one of the first well known musicians that was into drugs and it shows in her singing, just real mellow and smooth.

Again nothing noteworthy. Napalm Death is just a bunch of loud muck. I know lots of people into them, but nothing I could ever bear sitting through. Megadeath, has some resonable stuff, but again nothing worth devoting a collection to. If you still have an open ear, give Opeth a try. Or october tide, katatonia. If you dig any of that and want more I can help.

If megadeath had came out before Metallica then Metallica wouldent be Big everyone would say Oh metallica has some resonable stuff but again nothing worth devoting a collection to. Its ur opinion but alot of people who actually followed megadeath think metallica is nothing compared to MD.

I'll take you up on that once I've digged it out on iTunes.
To be honest though, I just dont dig it any more - did about 15 years ago. As I said, I grew out of it. Cheers for the guidance though, I'll give it a listen.
If I can throw a recommendation in your general direction, try Squarepusher - he's on Warprecords, specifically HardNormalDaddy.

Post Script - with you on Neplam, probably what put me off metal and onto Jazz. Fraif my collections very eclectic - metal is less than 20 discs

Jazz music is amazing, high or not, but when I'm high sometimes I start to hear the language in jazz music...the communication between the instruments and it's just so rad...beign a musician I love jazz either sober/stoned but when I'm high it's elevated for sure... Mahavishnu Orchestra is unbelievable.

I listen to a lot of "weird" music (so I've been told) but when I'm stoned I find myself listning to Radiohead, My Bloody Valentine, Sigur Ros, and sometimes stuff a little weirder like Modest Mouse/Ugly Casanova
