Can a sample get too hot if is starts at room temp and is concealed [down there] for too long (w/ 1 heat pad)? Or is it more of a case getting it too hot while prepping and not enough time to cool?

Are you practicing? What do your practice drills tell you?

When I practice, I use water at room temperature to start, I do not warm it in the microwave, because I use the "real thing" when I sub and do not want any problem with heating too much. I have had pretty good luck if I use the "whizzinator" and let it warm for about 2 hours before the test with one hand warmer.

BT, what is your "tried and true" method for reaching optimal temp?

I have many T/T methods, ranging from microwaves to vehicle heaters, to electric blankets, to the handwarmer pads themselves. Depends on the situation.
