DOJ: Marijuana Stores Can Open in Colorado and Washington

After lengthy delay, Justice Department gives states go-ahead for legalization plans

The Department of Justice announced Thursday it will not block recreational marijuana stores from opening next year in Colorado and Washington state. Voters in the two states elected to legalize the drug in November 2012, but marijuana advocates and state officials have anxiously awaited federal guidance ever since.

The Justice Department said in a release it will allow the stores to open, but that it expects state regulations to be "tough in practice, not just on paper, and include strong, state-based enforcement efforts, backed by adequate funding."

hello. as good as this is, banks have to accept cannabis cash, so the businesses do not have to rely on cash, only. this is currently not allowed federally, nor is it practical for illegal states; but each legal state must enact legislation which allows banks to accept cannabis revenue. please disregard if this is legal in Colorado and Washington already... i do not yet live there.

^ that's a good point, will the new stores be cash only? that will make them targets for robberies unless they come up with some sort of private cash management or maybe some sort of bit coin like payments might eventually take over. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I could see a cannabis commodities market developing where one could buy futures in the crop as an investment without actually taking possession.

and hemp should be huge, too.
