Hi

I'm planning on growing for the first time and have an area in mind but I don't know whether it's gonna be suitable. It's in a utility room/large cupboard underneath the sink. The sink doesn't get used and the space under it is about 70cm x 70cm x 60cm. I'll be running a 400W HPS system, which I initially planned to hang under there but now after running into problems with that idea I'll have to stand the lamp vertically. I only want to grow one or two plants.

Will this area be sufficient for a 400w HPS lamp? The last thing I want is any fire hazards! And what about standing the light vertically? Is that gonna have any adverse effects?

Cheers.

your gona need a verry good ventilation system, and i herd that with a 400 watt the space in between the light and the plant is supposed to be 40 cm, anything closer might damage the plant.

The area will only be good for starting plants. What you gonna do when they get to be a few feet tall. I've got a 600 HPS system and have to keep the light about a foot off the plant. You really want the light up top -- and you can add vertical lamp later -- but you want the plants to grow UP. For starting your plants you can use a regular flourescent or grow lamp that puts off way less heat. You'll still want to do some venting to keep the oxygen flowing snd cut down on heat buildup. Overall -- I think it's too small for what you are using.
