Here's the situation my friend is in.....

If a person took a DOT/SAMSHA test, and in the temp box they marked "yes" for 90-100, but in the comments they wrote 92 (they did this before when it was 94 and there was no problem) and also wrote something along the lines of "very strong smell", will there be issues at the lab or MRO ? One would assume that once it's bagged and initialed it's good to go, right ? If the collector wasn't going to accept the sample, a re-test should have taken place right away, right ?

The concerning part is the urine was 100% human and 100% clean, but was in a mug of water to maintain heat, prior to testing in an airtight container. Maybe 2 hours elapsed from time of collection to time of "donation" at the collection facility.Fear has it that the pH could have been thrown off by raising and lowering the heat of the urine and by occasionaly opening the cap to check temp.

My friend is pretty nervous and would appreciate any input you might have.

Peace !

If the collector suspected that the sample was tampered with, the collector, under DOT and SAMHSA regulations, would order an immediate re-collect and under direct observation. The collector would then process and send off both samples, and indicate on the "Remarks" section of the CCF form that a re-collect under D/O had taken place, and the reason(s) why.

This would not have any effect on any of the urine constituents being tested. The only time temp has any effect is if the urine sample was brought to a boil.

And theres no sensible reason to bring a urine sample to a boil when the acceptable temp range is 90-100F.

Thanks for the response(s).

Like I said, our only concerns were the comments written down (temp and strong smell), and also the fact the collector mentioned that the temp when submitted "wasn't very good". We're just hoping the collector wasn't trying to throw red flags towards MRO. IF by some strange chance the MRO calls to inquire about pH or strong smell, and is looking for a valid medical reason (diet, etc...) are there any foods and such that should mentioned if asked ? We know that the MRO can still call for a re-test under direct observation if they feel the need due to pH off, etc...

Thanks in advance, and we'll be sure to let people know the outcome.

the fact the collector mentioned that the temp when submitted "wasn't very good". Obviously, the temp was good enough for the collector. Otherwise the collector wouldve ordered an immediate re-collect under D/O. The reason why temp is checked is because its a measure of deterrence from bringing in a substituted sample. Once the sample is processed and sent off, temp is no longer a factor.

pH is checked to determine adulteration only (due to sample being spiked with a drop-in additive, bleach, etc). As long as the sample wasnt spiked, you have nothing to worry about.

Great info, and thanks for confirming what I thought. My friend got the call from MRO today requesting an address to send the results to. Good to go !!!
