Often receive question about the right choosing of grow light, so give some indication here to help someone who needs help.

Most people are not professional gardener, so the below indication is for them as the simplest and most effective way to choose the grow light. Not for someone who has specific requirement on the growing of plant.

Actually the 1st concern is the wavelength emitted by the light, why no light can be as good as the sun is that light only emits parts of wavelength in spectrum. Different light emits different wavelength in spectrum. see below graph: Activity of Plant VS Wavelength of Light

290601

In above graph, there are 2 peak points of wavelength: 445nm and 660nm. If the light you choose doesn't emit or emit less wavelength of these 2 points, the light does little help on the growth of your plant.

So in short words, when you choose a light, you need ask spectrum from seller for the light. It is also the answer to the question why different light give different impact on the growth of your plant.

Welcome Naturetong,

That is wonderful, I bet most of us have seen similar charts many times. Wavelengths in nanometers are not usually found on lighting devices outside of led. Most HID and florescent lamps list temperature (2700º K - 10,000ºK).
Can you explain how wavelength compares to the kelvin scale (Max Planck's quantum theory). Thank you.

Obviously, this chart shows why LED manufacturers focus on blue and red - the only colors that show the greatest effectiveness.
