i would like to know how many holes should i drill and how big or does it matter as long as it drains i was just going to center one 1in hole to replicate a regular flower pot and would it help to drill some tiny holes in the sides to increase the amount of air going to the roots.

The roots can start to grow through the holes so I wouldnt drill too many, unless they're pretty small. As long as your medium is well aerated and drains well than you shouldnt need too many holes. You can do the 1in one at the center and a few smaller ones around the bottom of the bucket.
