So let's say one had some plants in the middle of the veg stage, and was going to be gone for a week. Six days to be exact.

I'd rather not have someone come over, and would like to just have the plants not die.

I'm thinking that if I give them tons of water the day I leave, drop the lighting down to 18/6 (from 20/4), they might be just fine and dandy by the time I get back? Or am I going to need a babysitter?

Well the number one rule is to not tell anyone but I don't know how you could water them.

It depends how old they are... you said the middle of veg so I'm guessing they are about 4weeks old. At 4weeks some plants are big enough that they can go 3-4 days without any water, so although 6-7 would be a stretch, it shouldn't kill them. Turning the lights from 24/0 to 18/6 will also help considerably. The final decision has to be up to you, it depends on how often you water them now and if they are big enough to sustain themselves for longer than usual (bigger plant means a bigger root system, which can get as much water as possible). So if its a good size and you water at most every other day then i would say that you should be ok.

just water the heck out them before you go. forget about them for a week and enjoy your vacation. the idea of the vacation is to take a break from ALL of your worries. if ti eases your mind, remember, it is a weed. and it thrives in deserts (among other areas). the 6-7 days without water might actually strengthen the plants. i do this every year -- water them well, keep them on 24/0, take off for 7 days (enjoy myself) and i've yet to lose a plant.

for the worst case scenario...

take a two liter soda bottle.
Drill the smallest hole you can find in a drill bit right thru the cap.
Fill the soda jug.
Turn upside down.
Let the water drip into a cup. DO it now so you can adjust the drip.

See how much drips in a day.

Try to adjust the size of the hole to where it is dripping at about the quantity where you normally water you plants.

Say a half gallon every 2 days....make the hole so it drips about the same. Do it now so you can measure the accuracy before you leave.

Place the bottle upside down so the drip hole is clear and uncluttered and GO ON VACATION.

If you like, buy one of those X10 cams for 39.00 thats transmits a wireless signal to your PC. Put it on your plants and view your grow while you are gone.

Have a friendin mine, whereas if disaster should strike, you can call him / her and for emergency only, save your plants.

I hope some of these ideas are beneficial.

I know I could never leave lights on 24/0 or even 18/6 for 6 days and not have to water. I guess a lot depends on your soil, but I have to water every 2 days and now the big girls are drinking 1/2 gal a day.

Oh, and also, the Home Depot now sells those stakes you fill with water then leave. I went to get some tonight to try but couldnt find them.

I intend to do the same thing you are doing and have the same issue.

I will let you know what I intend to do once I get the measurements accurate.

Hey you guys those are some awesome responses. It sounds like I hit on something that a bunch of people have been trying to deal with. I like the soda bottle trick, and might do that if I can't find the "watering sticks". If I got REALLY creative, I could build an elaborate system like this:

A bucket full of water. Sumbersible pump in said bucket, on a timer to run for 30 minutes a day. Restrict the hell out of the water supply or output, and figure out how to make sure it pumps the necassary amount of water, once per day (or however often). But that sounds like a bit of a pipe dream, pardon the pun. Maybe one day if I was a "super grower", but nah.

I'm worried about destroying this crop because they're my only seedlings, and if these girls die, I have to buy more seeds and start from scratch again.

And do the dipshit who made the comment about "having no friends I can trust", two things I've learned in my life concerning illegal activities:

(a) Shut the fuck up. Don't tell anyone what you're doing, ever. The number one way that cops figure stuff out is by you opening your bit fat trap. I'll probably rotate my username on here a bunch, just so I don't leave an e-trail of information.
(b) Friends today can become your enemies of tomorrow. It's a sad reality, and although I have a lot of awesome friends over many years, I see no reason to stake 15 years in a state prison on that when I can just pop a hole in a two liter bottle instead.

Dead right, Darpin and HardDon. No matter how good of a friend you may think somebody is, they can easily turn and fuck you over; I've experienced this first hand several times; people who I thought were my friends and who I thought I could trust stab me in the fucking back. That's why I only associate with my family now because they are the only people I trust 100%. I do not have trust worthy friends, hell, they're not even friends I just know them. I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them and I don't wish to be around people like that. If they ain't blood I don't trust em.
