First grow and winter's coming

Planning my first grow and have a few temp questions. I have two options, a small cabinet that will hold two plants but very restricted on height, cold not an issue. I also have a much larger attic space to use but the temp in the winter is probably only around 55-60. I will be using cfls (12 x 27w housed in a ductwork reflector). With these lights only a few inches away, would the lights warm the plants enough in the attic space? I know I can regulate the heat in the cabinet but dont want the problem with height restriction.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
