This is something I've noticed for several years, from soon after I started smoking 4 years ago. In my town in the late 90's, marijuana was fairly scarce, and what was available was primarily shwag, and occasionally midis. It was not for a full year after I started smoking that I made aquaintence with kind buds, and even then they were little better than seedless midis. Before I left my town to join the ranks of college students last year, shwag was seriously hard to find, as were midis. The quality of the kind bud had increased to the point where what was considered KB in the past would be cut rate, bargain buds. Now I'm at college, and I swear that no one at my university sells less than kind nugget, and trying to find even midis requires a trip to the city.

My theory is that this represents a change in the supply routes of nugget, from grower to user. The imported nuggets from abroad, mostly Mexico and Canada, have been supplanted by local growers harvesting relatively small crops. Hence the rise in availability and the drop in prices reflects the increased competition, while the improved potency is the result of experienced growers pampering their crop.

Well, that model I think explains New England, but I can't wager a guess for any other area. Someone should write a book about the "21st Century Cannabis Renaissance." I'd read it.
