Cutting off the little buds??

I have a quick question. A guy I know told me that when im flowering I need to trim the dead weight off the bottom of the plant so all the grow energy is concentrated on the upper larger buds and not wasted on the smaller bullshit buds. It sounds good to me so I did it. I also think it is an excellent mite and pest control method. Any input??
