I have a friend of mine who has an 17 year old son who is curently playing JR. A hockey with a canadian team,,,He has had form of stomach cancer that he developped about 5 years ago,,,he underwent surgery and within one month he was back on skates,,,he is doing very well now and the cancer seems to be gone but he has issues with eating and nausea,,,if you'd see him you'd think he's a healthy kid, '6 "1 205 lbs,,flies around the ice ,,,every one that knows him are aware that he had cancer and all that, but what no one knows is that he smokes weed to stimulate his appetite and keep his food down ,,after his surgery he was starting to lose his appetite, felt sick and weasy all the time, he explained this to his doctor and nothing worked, he dropped 15 lbs during the summer months ,(those months he should have been gaining weight instead of losing), he lost a step and was losing the will to play, he figured it was going to be over, wouldn't play hockey anymore,,some friends of his got him smoking weed and by the time training camp arrived in september the kid had gained most of his weight back, his strenght was coming back and got some spring in his step,,now he's made the J.A. team and is third in scoring on his team in his rookie season and as the season progresses so does he,,the kid is that good,,he's starting to turn heads in the big league,,i think he's got 2-3 more years to put in the league in order to be eligible to get drafted,,,,,,,,,,,
I said all of this to bring up a question that came up a few weeks back with my friend and his son,,,the son is actually thinking of getting his medical marijuana license from health canada which we're sure he would receive without any problems,,,but if he gets a license and he does make the big leagues, or even at the J.R. level he's playing at, would smoking weed ruin his chances of making it big even if he's licensed for it?
Sports have zero policy towards weed, it's a banned substance and there is no way they would let you play,,,but what if you have a legal license signed by doctors and government officials? Are they still going to ban you from making the big times? It would be a huge dissapointment if he's be selected one of the top young prospects and they end up crushing this kid's hope and dreams .
This kid smokes about 2 gr. a week, does not do it with anyone around, doesn't want anyone to know,,summer months are the lazy months and that's when he has to smoke a bit more because there is no intense workout to stimulate his appetite,,smokes 4 gr. weekly in the summer,
After discussing this for awhile I told my friend and his kid, " Better get yourself a good lawyer, this is going to be a good fight"
What do you think? Should he fight this if the league crushes his hopes or should he just lay back? I say fight this to the top,,:smokin:
