View Full Version : where is the best place to retire in No Cal?
I'm not even close to being there yet but just thinking ahead I would love to retire in No Cal somewhere out in the boonies someday where I can grow a garden in peace for my own personal use. I'm thinking Trinity might be the place, seems very secluded and is very beautiful from what I've seen. any thoughts from locals out there? well any friendly thoughts anyway?? :D beach front would be awesome but probably hella expensive, thats why I'm thinking Trinity.

hello. the choice is between the Mt. Shasta area, the coastal area, the eastern foothills, or nearer Sacromental and San Francisco. you have to be specific about your lifestyle, or if just good cable reception is important. do you grow food, or need groceries nearby? do you like rivers, lakes, tall trees, or plains, mountains and colder weather? or would you rather be closer to the vineyards? the cost of living is pretty expensive. is it just the weed? you could help bring that to your state.

try the bohemian grove north of san fransico.....i hear the good old boys throw wild parties out there.....but anywhere up north into the woods is a great spot.....i hope you retire there somewhere nice
thank you everyone, personally I like seclusion (I have a satellite dish :)) love the outdoors, rivers, lakes, trees. I would like to grow my own food too but will probably still be coming down for some supplies. I think there is only thing to do ... road trip. I've been all over Northern Cal from Mendo and Humbolt thru Trinity and Shasta, love it all!!! think I just need some more r&d. The one place I haven't been to yet is the far northern coast between Humbolt and Oregon, I've heard that is some of the most beautiful scenery of all. bohemian grove would be a trip. :stoned: don't think they'd let me in, tho.

If I were going to retire in Northern Calif. I would like to retire in or near Junction City or close to Mt. Shasta Lake. If I wanted to retire near medical services, I would not chose either! I would chose McKinleyville or Near Fernadale! pr

I was from the central valley, moved up to the foothills above Sacramento into the "Gold Country" been here about 30 yrs, I will never leave. Some great gardens up here. Came because I wanted to raise my kids somewhere a little safer, stayed for a whole lot of good reasons. One little bit of advise, try for above the fog and below the snow if you look in the foothills. Good luck. PS Try Grass Valley!

hello again. so there you have it. it is very different from the eastern foothills of the Sierra Nevada, to the northwest coast, to the midwest coast, to the central valley. southeast towards Sacromental (NoCal), residents enjoy weekending in Tahoe; or gambling in Reno. Whiskeytown has a beautiful lake in the wilderness. Shasta Lake is more popular for riverboat living. the Russian River north of San Francisco, near a gay town named Guerneyville, may offer everything you crave, with tall trees, and less than an hour north of romantic San Francisco, or east to the Napa Valley. Guerneyville is about 20 miles east of the Pacific ocean, with local forests, and if i had the money... there really is so much about NoCal to enjoy, it really is about not being too sedentary wherever you land- unless you just want to sit on the porch. the hills and northern mountains offer plenty to sit and daydream about. the views are good. it is hard not to enjoy wherever you go in Northern California.

I think I would choose Cloverdale over Guerneyville, cause Guerneyville is prone to serious flooding periodically! pr

Dang I love "Sacromental" that's so right on! ( supposed to mean the sacramets!?) I can't agree more with your knowledge of 'our area' and it's possible effects on most people from time to time 'up' here. I just feel it was a way better trade off, wait a sec.. I don't trade off a thing anymore.. love it. DO IT as soon as you can. Peace.
