Like everybody else, I usually soak the used rock in a diluted chlorine solution, rinse and dry. This is a pain if you have a large grow and you want to fire up your garden right away. I've been looking to machine wash the rock but nothing's out there that can stand the punishment, until I found and industrial dishwasher manufacture in Petaluma, CA. Stero dishwashers make a stainless steel rack washer that fits the bill (SC-25). I used one of their tray washers when a worked in the cafeteria in middle school thirty years ago. I went to their factory and washed about four large bags of dirty hydroton in less than 30 min. The machine is not cheap, but if you're throwing away your used rock from a 4000w grow, let's just say it would pay for itself in 6 months and its so heavy duty that it would last 20 years. Do the math. Call 1-800-762-7600 and ask for Terry, the general manager, and ask about the hydroton washer.
