You sure you want to open this can of worms??? You'll get different opinions on this one....
I have three reasons why I pluck off fan leaves two weeks prior to harvest....
1 - It saves me time when I perform the initial trim, the day of harvest....
2 - Light penetrates further to the bud sites directly under where the fan leaves were....
3 - Air flows around the colas faster and smoother....
I also do these three steps to try to avoid bud rot....(cause I can't control humidity, so I do this to get better airflow)....

yea, thats kind of my way of thinking when it comes to this topic. it just makes sense to get a little more light and air before harvests. i get mixed reviews but my friends that are more knowledgeable seem to lean on the plucking side

Another option is to cut them. You should go this route even if you plan to take the whole leaf eventually. Benefits - you get light into the plant and the leaf still adds production. Plus if you end up taking the whole leaf (wait 4 - 7 days) it is less of a shock. When I say cut in half I mean cut off the fingers. I only take whole leaves if / when they yellow significantly. I scrog so light penetration is what it's all about. I often cut off the fingers.
