I Just bought a Can 66 Carbon Filter and a can-fan 6inch ho 440 cfm and I tried to test it with cigarette smoke and I could smell it through the other end of the vent hose i have leading out of my room. Im using the filter in a 5 foot wide 7 foot tall by 9 foot long room. im running a 600 watt hps and a 400 watt hps with another fan pushing the heat out of the lights out of my grow room. the can filter and fan are connected together and forcing the air out of the room i have a switch hooked up to the fan and im running the fan at 70% my humidity is at 50% my air temp is at 73 degrees f and im getting a smell out of the filter when i tested it with cigarette smoke. Any Ideas as to how i can test the fan and filter or how to get the odor to stop? I am stumped as to how i can get rid of the odor im not into the flowering stage yet but when I do im worried the smell will be over powering and i have this carbon filter and it wouldn't do what i was hoping for it to do...

are you pulling the air through the filter or pushing it through the filter with the fan?

because if you are pushing air through the filter with the fan then your setup is backwards. Air should always pass through the white prefilter, then through the carbon exit in the middle of the canister being pulled out of the filter by the fan.

and if your setup is ok you can always install a ozone generator or recycle back the hot air in the grow room cooling it with an icebox 6", so you dont heat the grow room. that way you contain the odor to the room, so neighbors cant smell it!!!!

Could you elaborate a little more on this setup? You say you are using 2 fans? What type of reflectors for the lights? Are the lights seeing positive or negative pressure? Is there just one route for the airflow or are the lights and filter running separately?

Sorry for all the ?s, but I'm having trouble picturing it. It's a fairly small space, the 66 should be doing fine. :(

THE 100 cfm fan if separate from the 440 cfm can-fan thats just to push the hot air out of the lights... The air is being pulled through the filter through a hole that exits my room im pulling air into the room from the outside of the room. the dehumidifier is in the room below the carbon filter in the room and it pulls the hot air from the dehumidifier out of the room. Im getting a smell from cigarette smoke cause thats the only thing I could think of with a strong odor that i could test to try to see if its working and im still getting a smell i have a switch for the fan and I have it turned down to 70% the can filter requires 412 max cfm my fan puts out 440 cfm so at 70% i don't think that is a bad percentage for my fan to be at? Im stumpped

try smoking a joint that as a strong smell! it's not clear your setup the way you explain it or i<m stoned. Check my answer to this tread hope it helps you... http://boards.cannabis.com/grow-log/196620-600w-hps-2x3-grow-tent.html

basically i have a 5 foot wide by 7 foot tall by 9 foot long room. hanging from the ceiling i have the can 66 filter with my 6 inch 440 cfm ho fan pulling air out of the room at the opposite end of the room out the top of the room just below that hole is a smaller fan pulling air back into the room. on the 600 watt hps i have a 100 cfm fan pushing air through the light and through duct work to a hole that leads to the outside of the room. when i leave the room and shut the room and stand infront of the vent duct that the carbon filter and fan is hooked to and have someone blow smoke through it i can smell it outside the room. I have a switch that turns the fan on the filter up or down i have it set at 70% which is around 360 to 370 cfm and my filter at max is rated at 412 cfm. I just can't get the smell to fade that much its strong with the smoke i am wondering if my plant smell will be an issue?

ONA Block Fresh Linen ,ONA Mist Dispenser,Ozium / TimeMist Dispenser Starter Kit deodorize the room if you cant kill the smell

If you have an air cooled hood make sure it's sealed. I could see light through mine from around the edges. Also i just had a friend tell me that when he inspected his cheap ducting he found little pin holes throughout it.

i was under the impression that using a carbon filter would eliminate the smell all together atleast make it to where u could hardly smell anything i have 60 plants going and in like 2 weeks im going to have a smell issue i want to kinda get it fixed before that happens lol..

it's like everything quality filters come at a higher price and even if you paid good money for it it's hit or miss with carbon filters dont buy your next one from the same shop!

if the carbon in the filter is not compact and full to the top air passes without being filtered. make shure the top with the filter exit with rivets is not leaking put duct tape or chrome metalic tape on the ridge just to be shure there's no leak on the filter if it's not going through the carbon it's not being filtered.

is cigarette smoke able to be filtered through a carbon filter? or is that smell to over powering for the filter cause that seems like the cigarette smoke smell would be more over powering then the smell of my plants?

yes it's supposed to filter any smell. cigarette ash trays with filters use carbon

oh yeah fresh air intake should be low not high in the top but it does not change anything for the smell

your 100 cfm fan and cooltube the ducting system connected to it is isolated from the grow room right?

in my experience there is no smell more overpowering than flowering cannabis plants. You need to create a negative pressure in the room so that more air is going out than going in, Therefore all of the air must be filtered through the carbon before it is expelled from the room. Carbon filters work wonders, if its not working its not set up right.

So this is just a filter/fan/and short piece of duct, straight out. Pretty foolproof.

What type of fan is this smaller one?
I would just eliminate it. Your 440 is more than adequate to handle all the airflow this room needs.

on the 600 watt hps i have a 100 cfm fan pushing air through the light and through duct work to a hole that leads to the outside of the room.

Huh? Where is this air dumped? Outside? If it isn't running through the filter, it's gonna stink.

when i leave the room and shut the room and stand infront of the vent duct that the carbon filter and fan is hooked to and have someone blow smoke through it i can smell it outside the room.

A better test would be to leave a cigarette or incense burning in the room for a while. Blowing smoke through the filter concentrates the smoke in a much smaller area of the filter. Too much, forced into a small surface area will just pass too quickly to be adequately filtered.

I think you'll be good. Your gonna be busy...60 plants in 45 square feet. :greenthumb: Sounds like work! :)

Wouldn't be a bad idea to keep a jar of the Ona fresh linen around, like CH mentioned. Takes care of those stray odors that waft around when you go in and out. I swear by the stuff.

I'm sure the light/cooltube is not isolated from the growroom! air from the cooltube ducting system should intake freshair from outside the growroom and also exhaust hot air outside the growroom. that prevents hot air and odors from leaving the grow room!!!!
