First grow log so feedback and critiquing are appreciated. Started on the log a little late, but sprouted 9 bag seeds (from decent batches of smoke) about two weeks and a half weeks ago. Used damp coffee filters in a cheap zip lock bag. Just installed a 400w mh lamp about 5 days ago now (they were under two 40w t12 plant/aquarium bulbs before that). Hoping that the new lamp will cut down on the amount of stretching that I saw in my first grow (not documented in a log). Would like to try and top these to maximize yield, but think I need to wait a little longer to do that? Only one pic for now. More to come...

Anyone got any clues as to why I can't post attachments to this thread? I was able to attach to other threads no problem... Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Next time when you start them keep the t12 very close to the plants. I'm talking like a couple inch from the plants, the light will be so intense there gona become dense and bushy instead of stretchy!!Dont do this with other types of light only neons (no heat output, it cant burn the plant:))

oh yeah also 4" plastic pots with saucers next time you always want drainage so roots establish well. Use those foam cups for cloning they retain water cutings establish well in them, excess water can be good when you want a branch to form roots.

I will keep the t12 closer next time when they are starting out. You think I should keep them on the t12 until I the 4th/5th set of true leaves is up, or when should I switch them to the MH? Also, had them sitting in cups with holes in the bottom and then another cup around that one. When I transplanted them today to the next size pot, they had roots all the way down and reaching into the outer cup that was still retaining a little bit of water. Pics after the transplanting coming in a min...

Transplanted the younglings from the styrofoam cups into 8" plastic pots with a water retaining trays at the bottom today. These are the younglings after the transplant. I have the 400w MH about 30 inches from the top of the plants at this point to keep the temp down (my little 4" fan isn't quite getting the job done).

You should fill your pots more, after a couple watering and when plants have eaten part of the soil. There wont be much left! and for the mh question they still have the green feeding sacs their a bit young. But plants love mh lamps. so has long as it's not to close it should not be a problem (12"to 16 " is good). basicly you put your hand over the plants if the light is to hot for your hand it's to close to the plants.

and your soil looks heavy sure hope it's not plain dark gardening soil?

if you respect the rule of to hot for you hand to hot for the plants, you could start the seeds under the mh. Sure it will cost you a bit more electricity but plants will be bushier.

For the soil I am using the same potting soil as I used in the styrofoam cups plus some peat moss for breathability (about 65% potting soil and 35% peat moss). Hopefully within 6 weeks I will be re-potting them to start the flowering phase with new soil and peat moss. Thanks for the tip on the MH light as well. Next new crop will be starting on the MH to try and increase bushiness :)

I had been looking for some of that, but had been unsuccessful finding it locally. Think I may have found one local retailer that carries it and will check it out when it's time to re-pot these for the flowering phase. Thanks!

every gardening store carries promix where i live. and if you dont like giving nute like thrive alive for exemple to you seedlings when they sprout keep on using your mix for the first stage pots

canadianhemperor
10-15-2011, 04:55 AM
or use something like mike micorhizes potting mix for seedlings you wont have to give your plant any nutes for 2 weeks with that for shure

I found a couple of places that sell pro-mix. Should I get the BX or HP kind?

Just wanted to drop my :twocents:.... Mirrors are better at reflecting images than they are at reflecting light.... They actually absorb light.... Flat white paint or black/white poly plastic is best....

depends what it says on the chart what are the proportions and what is in it. exemple 75-85% peat moss sphagnum ,perlite( no %),limstone for ph adjustment( no %)

Good to know, don't really have any walls that surround my veg room on all four sides. Going to cut some cardboard boxes and paint them white when I have a bit of time.

I'm guessing, based on this (http://www.pthorticulture.com/media/3711/comparative_en.pdf) doc that either would do fine. Wish it gave the percentages on the Perlite, Vermiculite, and Limestone instead of just the Peat Moss...

Not a fan of cardboard i think you should look at other options!!!! cardboard is full of bacteria it usually contains a good amount of recycled materials and cardboard is brown therefore not bleached so......! Never wipe your face my friend with brown handpaper it's why they are not called papertowels!

for promix performance lp15 or fpx and Mycorrhizae I use it for seedlings only so for them maybe HP Mycorrhizae. as you can see none of the soils I have selected contain vermiculite!

Maybe they think it's what makes there product unique and special, a secret recipe!!

Been 4 days since transplanting into larger pots. Added some more medium as well. Everyone seems to be doing well with the exception of the sloucher in the top right of the group picture.

These are the post FIM pics. Hoping that I did this correctly and took enough and/or not too much. Will post some updates on these two in a couple of days. FYI, learned everything about FIM here. (http://boards.cannabis.com/grow-faqs/144573-guide-fimming-topping-made-easy.html) Very informative!

It's been several days since my last post. Plants that I tried to FIM look like they simply received a haircut on some of the fan leaves so I'm guessing I didn't do it right or at the right time. Not sure exactly what went wrong. Otherwise everyone seems to be looking pretty good. All of these are roughly 35 days old at this point (counting since they broke the soil). About 2-3 more weeks and they will be put into the flowering room. Close ups are of the plants I tried to FIM.

Been a while since my last update. Was enjoying the fruits of the first crop and got a bit lazy in posting... At any rate, started with the 9 plants. 3 turned out to be males and were promptly terminated, leaving me with 6 beautiful females. I have put the females on a 10/14 light schedule based on some reading done on this site. They are under a 400W HPS now and seem to be doing well, though I have had a few scares since moving them to flower. Think I jumped the gun on the flowering nutes (dosed them with some FoxFarm BigBloom and some LiquidKarma) and got a few nanners cause of it, though it is hard to see them now due to the amount/density of the hairs. And I also toasted one of them as it spent a day or two too close to the light (oops). Debating on chopping the burnt top off of that one and letting the lower bud sites enjoy a promotion. Thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. They are now 18 days into flowering. These are all of the close ups. Will follow up with a couple of group shots in another post shortly.

Group shots and a shot of the one that got a little toasty... Again, thoughts on chopping the toasted part would be greatly appreciated. I am assuming that if I cut off the burnt area that the bud sites directly below it will be promoted and enjoy the benefits of extra light and more of the plants energy, but I could be dead wrong. Don't want to chop and go from bad to worse... Thanks!

Bx or Hp, only diff is more perlite in the Hp. It dries out quicker. If you're feeding liquid nutrients then Hp may be a little better. For use with organic soil mix and less liquid feeding the Bx is better.
