View Full Version : My First Closet Grow (CFL / AutoFlowering Strains)...

Hello All,

So this is my first indoor closet grow and I plan to keep track of it using this grow log. The idea behind the grow log is for me to keep a diary and can reference at a later date with other grows, to collate information as I learn during the grow, to share my experiences and to get opinions, advice from other growers and just give back to the community what it has given so much to me.

The grow setup is a tent in a closet, the size of the tent is 60cm x 60cm x 140cm. I have one 300watt 9U CFL (Blue Spectrum 6500k) currently on them, I plan to swap that with a 300watt 9U CFL (Red Spectrum 2700k) when they start flowering.

I am only growing autoflowering strains mainly because of my curiosity in them. I have 3 x Afghan Kush Ryders and 5 x G13 Labs Pineapple Express.

I have an exhaust system which has a carbon filter attached and exhausts out of the top of the tent, into the ceiling and out into the cupboard above. The intake is from the bottom of the tent and pulls cold air from under the floorboards of the cupboard the tent resides in.

I am currently awaiting two 6" oscillating clip on fans, which i plan to attach to the sides of the tent to help with airflow and breeze directly on the plants (when they sprout).

I planted the germinated seeds in 3 litre pots using biobizz organic soil mix. I have ordered some Biobizz bloom ferts for when they start to flower. I am not going to bother with VEG nutes as I believe the organic soil will be enough for the plants for the first 5 weeks and they will be into flower then because they are autoflowering strains therefore straight onto bloom food.

I am going to take some pics of the tent and space now so you can see what I am describing, I will then post pictures and updates as and when something happens.. so when they sprout i guess will be the next post :-)

If you have any questions, or I've not mentioned something important then please ask! :-) I would like this to be an interactive grow log that stays on the topic of my grow so I welcome all opinions and advice and comments :-)

OK so that's it for now. The temperature is high as we're getting hot weather here now and having the foam door there brings the temperature off, if i take the foam door off (which i have now) it drops to around 82-85 degrees, which is a little more acceptable.. however these plants are on 18/6 or will be when they sprout, lights are on 24/7 now until they sprout just to help with temperature etc in the tent and i guess they like a lot of light when they start out.. i know i should have a dome over them but i've not got the money to afford one now so will have to make do as they are.

I just looked at them closely and the one in the top left hand corner has sprouted so tomorrow i guess we will see the very first seedling popping through the soil!

Please let me know what you think so far.. look forward to hearing your comments :-)

this is a nice setup you have going on. if you have the money go for led's i think it can reduce the heat by 10 degrees cuz i have to get one of my own.

Hey dr kush, thanks :-)

I looked into LED lights but it seems they're pretty expensive (well, too much for me at the moment). However I think they can be made pretty cheaply, if you can find the right type of LED's then the electronics behind it isn't much to put together. This is something I am looking into already. For now I think I might look into the lower watt CFL range such as 65 - 105 watt Red/Blue spectrum, as I can scatter those around the room, in the canopy, etc.. as the lower wattage don't give off any heat (or so I've read). Will buy one of each and see then just fill the room with them - this is more for getting to those areas that the main light will not hit because hopefully I'll have a dense canopy :-)

I have about 4 sprouted now, will take some pics tomorrow :-)

how are you moving the air?

RickyNewman
09-29-2011, 08:18 AM
At the moment relying on the intake/exhaust fan to move the air... however I ordered two 6" clip on oscillating fans.. which should arrive today. I plan to clip them onto the tent pole in side and direct them at the canopy and just above to move air around in the tent.

Update: 4 have sprouted. Just waiting on the other four to sprout now, of which there seems no signs of. I hope they pop through soon :)

do you plan on leaving them in those pots the entire grow? if so please share technique

RickyNewman

Hey,

So the strains I have in there are auto-flowers (60-70 days from seed to bud). So, the short life span, I did a bit of research and it seems a 3 litre pot is enough for the life span of these plants. So I decided against transplanting halfway through, and opted for the bigger pots to start with.

This can cause issues.. its best to keep a plant in a pot just enough for the roots and transplant as it needs a bigger pot - however I overlooked this when I started the grow, and they're in the biggest pots they can be now anyway.

Another issue with my way is that it will be easy to drown them in such big pots.. which is why i am VERY careful when watering... i water only when soil is dry and not soggy all the way through. This is only my first run so I guess there are lots of lessons to be learned.. lets just see how they pan out in the pots they're in now.. if half way through I encounter problems I'll act on them fast and try to resolve them. Hopefully though I won't have any issues with the pots they're in.

Any thoughts, opinions, advice?

Also another sprouted today, so I have five currently sprouted, 4 x pineapple express and 1 x afghan kush ryder.

I recieved the two 6" fans today so placed them strategically in the tent ;-) I also have the door partially open with a huge ass 18" fan blowing in on them as its like 28/29 degrees here outside and very warm inside the house/cupboard/tent .. but I got it under control so far.

Will post pictures later today :-)

Hey,

So I lifted the light up to take some pictures for ya`all ;-)

I have had the clip on fans in there all day and intend to keep them running 24/7 along with the intake/exhaust this should suffice :-)

Anyway, onto the pics...

Nice looking setup you have there, but I think you are going to need more light for the flowering stage. I grow 4 plants in a 75x75cm tent under 2x250w 2700k CFL's, they are not autoflowers, but I try to keep them under 2ft tall because of the poor light penetration of CFL's. I veg my 4 plants under 1x125w 6500k CFL so you should be ok with the light you are using for the veg stage.

I am going off high watt CFL's for flowering, once you get to the 250w and 300w versions one of the main advantages of CFL's (low heat output) is greatly diminished and you have to have extraction similar to that required by other types of lighting.

RickyNewman

Thank you. I have been pondering about the lights for some time. I have one 300watt 2700k and one 300watt 6500k I plan to switch them around for veg/flower cycle, the room temperature is 75-80 in the evening, throughout the day it can hit the 90's (we've got a heatwave at the moment so i put this down to that, its usually 83 in the day) so I doubt I can have both 300watts running at the same time due to heat. How much does your 250watt heat up your room? I am having seriously trouble keeping it under 90 and I Have 2 fans, and exhaust/intake system, I think that bulb I have gives off some heat.. I was thinking about getting 4 105watts or 85watts in the red spectrum (2700k) as if they don't produce any heat i can have them dangling around in the canopy.. I don't know yet what the best solution is because i need more light like you say but how can i put it in there with the temps as they are. I can't afford a LED light either..

Do you know how much heat the lower watts give out? if any? it be great if i can find a compromise e.g. lower watt, but no heat and I'll just get a load of them?

What would you do in this situation? How are you keeping your grow cool?

I don't know about the heat differences between different types and makes of flourescent lighting, this is something worth investigating, it may be worth asking a question in the lighting section. What I do know is that 2x125 will put out the same heat as 1x250, but the 125's can get closer to the plant because the heat is more spread out.

What would you do in this situation? How are you keeping your grow cool?

My first grows used 2x125w CFL's for flower, all I needed for extraction was a few CPU fans (I used one for extract, one for intake and a couple of small ones to move air around inside the closet.

For my current grow I am using a proper extraction fan and carbon filter (the smell when I stepped up to 2x250 increased to the point where I had to go this route) the fan moves 175m3/hour. On warm days my temps hit 85-90. If I could go back in time, I would have bought the next size up which moves 250m3/hour.

If I were you and I wanted to add more light, I would get proper extraction and a filter. Or go with what you have and see how things work out. If you get poor results, next time start with less plants or invest in some lighting and extraction, depending on your available budget.

3 didn't sprout, they were 2 x Afghan Kush Ryder and 1 x Pineapple Express, so down to five now. Which leaves me with a problem - I want to fill the space back up with 2/3 plants, I have a choice between autoflower strains or maybe a indica strain and train it in there.. thing is I want to plant them mid way through this grow. However I had planned to do the stress ripen technique at the end of the first autoflower grow - where by I leave them in constant darkness for 3 days. Allowing lots more crystals to form and it to dry out a bit, so this would screw up any other plants I have in there at the time that are not ready for harvest... so I don't know whether to just hold back and plant the rest after these five are done.. we shall see...

Any thoughts, opinions or comments? :)

Hey,

So I have placed the 400watt HPS pointing into the grow tent as you can see in the picture.. i plan to do this for around 8 hours a day, just to help it along :-)

I seem to be able to keep the temperature under control with the way its placed and the big fan on top, so lets hope it adds a little to the yield :)

That HPS will be just the job once they get bigger, but it is overkill at the moment. Your CFL will be more than enough until they get bigger. If you had planted them in tiny pots to start, a 24w CFL would keep them very happy through the seedling stage.

I would go with just the 5 plants, rather than add more.

No problem. I am a bit embarrased that I managed to completely miss the fact that you already have a proper fan and filter, I can't even blame it on being stoned, as I have smoked all my last crop and I am waiting for the next one.

Do you know how much air that fan moves? You are having a heatwave in the UK atm, high temps shouldn't be much of an issue with your setup under normal UK weather.

Nice looking setup :)

RickyNewman
10-04-2011, 09:06 AM
Hey,

Thanks PhatJay :-)

Well the intake will push 130m'3/hr at 2800rpm and the exhaust is 115 CFM, but has a carbon filter on the end so this probably looses a few CFM because of that. I kinda overlooked this part of the grow setup as I should of got a more powerful exhaust, possibly around 200+ CFM. As I can't really feel much of a pull of air from the carbon filter..

Yeah we are having a bit of a heatwave, looks cooler today though, temps still around 91 in the tent. I am leaving the cupboard doors open with the tent doors zipped up, this seems to bring it down to the mid 80's but i have to shut the cupboard door when I sleep as I can't stand the noise lol. However the lights go off for a period of 6 hjours from 11pm - 5am to let the tent cool down more than anything so the temps should drop then to around 70's.

@smoketoker thanks :-)

For your next grow, have you considered having your lights on during the night instead of the day? My flower room lights run from 8pm to 8am.

RickyNewman
10-05-2011, 11:21 AM
@PhatJay, No I've not thought about this as I don't see what difference it would make when the dark period happens? The reason I choose the dark period from 11pm - 5am is because its too hot in the tent then, so will help keep temps under control. Also they're autoflowers so I won't be using anything but 18/6. Have you noticed differences in the outcome of the grow by having your dark/light periods at different times?

Been forever since I've been to these forums and you have a nice little set started. Your 18/6 method for autoflowering is perfectly ok throughout the WHOLE vegging and flowering process. Because they are autoflowers you will be fine with one time setting as they mature all the way through. Big thing to remember though, is when you do put them in DARK remember to keep your grow area completely dark during the "night" hours during flowering. Any light penetration can essentially hermie your plants and you will have seeds mixed in there. To me a big no no. Given I know you are a ways away from the flowering stage, but being they ARE autoflowers I would keep the night periods COMPLETELY dark even in veg just to reduce ANY stress that can happen during growth. Also if you start having problems with stretching in the near future you may consider doing a little bit of LST to keep it bushy. Then once it starts flowering release them and let the "bud porn" begin! Happy growing. I'll be stopping in time and again to see how things are coming along! GOOD LUCK!

Hey Italiano715,

First of all, welcome back, secondly, thank you :-)

Yeah, I intend to stick to the 18.6 throughout the auto flower life cycle. I'll be vegging some normal Indica strains half way through too, and then when all autoflowers are out, the indicas can goto 12/12 :-)

My grow tent is inside a cupboard and when the dark cycle is on, the cupboard door is closed, no light leaks at all. So no problems there :-)

Also I don't think stretching will be an issue due to the lights I am using, I can keep them as close to the plants as I want :-)

I will be experimenting with topping and LST'ing the indicas when they're vegging. Not the autoflowers, I don't expect these to get very big.

Look forward to hearing from you man!

The four seedlings in the middle are normal cannabis strains (ortega indica, and alquimista all four are feminized seeds), I plan to veg them for as long as the autoflowers are growing, then when the autoflowers are harvested, i'll switch them room to 12/12 for those four to bud :-)

Anyways, let me know you're thoughts etc.. it's late at the moment, so I will take better pictures of the plants tomorrow as they're bushing out like i've never seen before... and i need to get close up to show ya all!

Anyways, let me all know what ya think!

They are just so short and bushy its amazing! It's getting to the point where you can't see the stem for leaves/branches :-) Never seen them grow like this before.. can't wait till they start showing signs of sex. Shouldn't be long now as they're at 18 days after popping through the soil! Keep ya posted..

hey smoketoker!

Yeah I have a normal reflector on it, however i have bent the one side up so that the light off the two 400watt hids which are stacked length ways outside the door with the ten door open those shine on the plants through the 18 hours then i move them just before the timer kicks into darkness.. thats why you can't see part of the reflector in the pictures but it allows me to get 2x400watt bad boys on it though :D

So I am now starting to think about ferts as they will need them come the 5th week or so.. I have biobizz bloom, should i start them on 1/4 strength for first week, then see how it responds, if well up it to 1/2 dose second week, and so on so forth monitoring its reactions to it?

Any other tips/tricks/advice that could be worth mentioning at this stage, they're just about to show signs of sex they're at 18 days..

Thanks for the comments so far guys!

Hey guys,

I got a weird issues with four seedlings, take a look at the thread if you're following this grow log as it would help me out a lot!

Hi,

The idea you have for nutes seems to be fine. I usually start a bit earlier than 5 weeks but that should vary depending on your preferences and the kind of soil you are growing in etc.

I had a look at the pictures of your seedlings and they could be drying out. That's happened to me many times because I try to put my cfls to close to them. It usually takes a while for them to get the strength to resit the heat from those lights. Keeping the lights further away, using humidity domes/misting with water helps to protect them. If I'm right, their growth might get stunted for a while, but generally they will survive and get strong again. I usually find that by the 3rd set of leaves they are strong enough to protect themselves against the heat.

Hey smoketoker,

Thanks for the advice... I am using biobizz bloom and everything i've read seems to suggest 5 weeks is a good time to start feeding. I will be looking for signs in the plants that they want me to feed it around that mark.

Good thinking, you may well be right with the light/seedlings issue. I am thinking about dropping them back to a part of the grow room that's not directly under the light, maybe this well help take the stress off them and get them back to normal, then when they're a bit more mature, 3rd set of leaves or so, whack them back under the light? What do you think to that solution?

Thanks again for helping me through this, its most appriciated!

Thanks guys :-)

I re-arranged the grow room today and BOY what a difference. I now have the intake from underneath the floorboards, and the exhaust is a little different managed to get the room temp with nothing in it to ~60F, then with lights 70F, had an accident and broke the 300wat flowering light, so bought another should be here tomorrow. Once its in, I'll take new pictures, looks like i have so much more room and its that little bit cooler now :-) woooohooooo :-)

Until tomorrow, peace out! :)

Hey Guys,

So I started to notice the bottom most set of leaves turning pale green, which I assume means I need to start feeding them (the autoflowers that is).

I have a bottle of BioBizz Bio-Bloom (NPK = 2.0, 6.0, 3.5).

I currently water the autoflowers 550ml water every 2 days. So if each Autoflower has 550ml of water every 2 days, how much in ml of bloom nutes should I use in each watering?

Can someone help me work out the right amount, the bottle says 2 - 5ml per 1litre per feeding. So for 550ml i assume 1 ml? and as I want to try it on quarter strength first week, I guess i need only 0.25ml per feed? So If I mixed a 2 litre bottle i would put in 1ml in, then take 550ml for each plant out of that 2ltr bottle then rinse and repeat and see how they perform?

I base everything on 2ltr as i have a watering bottle thats 2ltr and a little bottle that holds 550ml :)

ANyways, look forward to your responses!

I'll take pics soon :-)

Your maths seems perfectly fine. However, I think you'd be better off watering until water drips out of the bottom of the pot rather than watering a given amount. Once your solution is complete you don't have to give the plant a specific amount. For example if you pour 10 litres of it into the pot it won't overfeed the plant as most of it will drip out of the pot anyway.

Hey smoketoker,

hah you're the only one that thinks my maths is great ;-)

I generally do water them until it seeps out the bottom.. this tends to be around the 550ml mark, but you raise a good point that i didn't realise until now, I guess overwatering/feeding happens because of frequency rather than quantity - i've not thought about it that way before.

OK, I will stick to the nute solution that I mentioned. Will probably start feeding my babies next weekend then. Unless they drastically deteriorate till then.

They are looking better already - will get some pics up soon :) Can wait to see the real buds start forming, oh what an experience this is! Growing is just as much fun and excitement as smoking :)

Anyways enough ranting from me.. im pretty high right now on some OG Kush :) mmmmm

Hey,

So just to let ya`all know. I've switched to 20/4 light schedule as I want the biggest buds I can get so the more light the better I figure.. had them on 18/6 for 3/4 weeks now. All auto's have showed signs of sex, and are now growing lots of white pistils :)

I will update with pictures soon.. want them to look impressive before i post next updates :)

Peace ya`all!

So a couple things to note. I started to see yellowing happen from the bottom most set of leaves upwards. From my research this tells me the plant is starting to use up its Nitrogen resources in the leaves, hence the yellowing. So I decided to start feeding my babies a little earlier than the 5 week plan, as they looked like they needed it (I hope it was this anyway). I put 1.25ml of BioBizz BioBloom into 2 litres of water, and fed the plants until water ran off from them. Today there doesn't seem to be anymore yellowing, but I will keep an eye on it this week. My watering is tending to be every 2 / 3 days, so I Watered them with nutes Sunday, when they dry out ill water again with nutes same measurements for this whole week. Then next week i'll up it to 2ml in 2litres of water, and so on so forth. Unless they respond badly to the nutes this is my plan.

Now a couple of questions... looking at the pictures in some of them you can see the yellowing on the leaves.. do you think I did the right thing? Is it a Nitrogen deficiency? ANy help / advice on this would be great? Should I go get a rich source of N in a fert or should I Stick to the biobizz biobloom which is NPK 2.0 6.0 3.0 ?

This is the part i struggle with when growing and usually end up messing up my plants so really need my hand held so to speak here.. i don't want to loose these beautiful looking ladies.

Another problem you may pick up on in the pictures is every morning when i check the room the damn plants grow so fast a couple of them touch the CFL and burnt the tips of the leaves. So now every night before the lights go out, i raise the lights a good few inches so that they don't touch in morning then lower again, just to protect them a little. IO think i have this bit under control now.

SO anything else you can see in the pictures? ANy advice/opinions?

Look forward to hearing from you guys!

Hey guys,

So I took one of the smaller ladies out of the room today to have a look at more closely. I noticed that the roots were poking through the holes in the bottom - so I have just got back from town with some 8 litre pots, they were in 3 litre pots so just transplanting now. Really didn't expect to need to transplant them thought 3litre pots for autos would be fine.. how wrong was I!

Let you all know how it goes with pictures later.

Wish me luck!

I hope this doesn't stunt their growth too much gonna be very gentle, but its an awkward process to transplant them now! :(

I have decided to use the tucking of fan leaves method rather than pruning as I don't like to cut the plant, I prefer to bend and tuck the fan leaves out of the way to expose light to the bud sites.

ANy comemnts, opinions welcome :)

Very nice plants. I can't think of anything suggestions, I think you're doing fine. The yellowing of the lower leaves is normal, even when you are feeding them the lower leaves still tend to die off eventually.

Hey,

Thanks smoketoker! :-)

I have now bought a big plastic box, t5 prop/veg lamp and have 12-15 seedlings at different stages in there vegging, I plan to place these into the tent after the autoflowers are done and whack to 12/12 as these are normal strains there on in. I will then veg/propagate in the little box (which i will get pics up of soon) and then transport into the now so called "flowering tent" hehe :-) nice little setup i got going if i dont say so myself :p

Going to play around learning stuff with some of the seedlings in the box, gonna do some LST, FIM, Topping, High Stress training, see what works best etc.. anyway, onto a picture update of the current grow:

@Smoketoker: the yellowing on the leaves shouldn't happen until the last couple of weeks of flowering.. i'm only at varying days from 6 days to 10 days into flower for those babies. Pineapple Express yellows like a bitch, more so than normal but still shouldn't this early, think it was needing food real bad.

Hey Ricky,
It's normal for the lower leaves to yellow, the very bottom leaves that is. If the problem begins at the bottom but is working it's way up the plant then they need nitrogen.

@smoketoker; yeah the early leaves went yellow then it started going up onto the fan leaves and working its way gradually up, looks like I started feeding just in time :-)

I have a question, do you think I should try some Molasses? I heard it does wonders for budding.. anyone have any opinions / comments on it? Whether I should try it out or just leave as is...

Nice to see you kept your log going Ricky, so many people don't. I think logging your early grows is one of the best ways to learn. Your plants are looking pretty good, they should give you a nice smoke.

If you want to use molasses make sure you get the UNSULPHURED kind, it is sometimes labelled Black Strap molasses but not always, check the ingredients label. Only use it once a week. You use 1 TEASPOON per Gallon of water (about 1ml per litre) and no more. Overdosing molasses is a bad idea and it will hurt your plants.
