Hey guys, my white widow plants are 46 days into flowering (12/12 cycle) and i have noticed a horribly nasty smell comming from the buds it smells like wet DAMP socks dingy smell... umm i was told that this is probably due to root rot, is there any possible way to fix this? and get the smell back in my buds? or have i completly messed it up, it would be a shame because this is my first grow and the buds look beautiful they just smell wierd.. i suppose ill learn from this but i dont want to waste this harvest any ideas, tips, comments, suggestions.. please help. Thanks in advance.

P.S: The plant itself, buds, stem, leaves etc all look in tip top shape you wouldn't be able to tell that somethings wrong unless u hold ur nose over the top and sniff and smell it...?

Peace.

I would rethink your soil-planting-potting scheme next time you plant. I think a common mistake is making sure that your soil has good draining qualities to it. If you just use straight super soil, or whatever you use (I am in the west, so super soil is the way to go here), mix a little pumice in there to add some structure to the soil. In this way, you will make sure that the entire profile (imagine cutting your pot in half and looking at the soil in the pot from the cut side) is draining well. I know some friends who have the same problem. Also, the more structure you have, i.e. add some vermiculite, pumice, or pearlite to your usuall soil mix, the better the soil will be able to buffer itself, the better the nutrient holding capacity of the soil, and the better the draining. Not only that, but your roots will be happy!! Hope this helps a little bit, and I am no expert, but I am an applied plant ecologist and biologist and taking a class on soils, so I know a lot about plants!

Peace

Yeah for my next grow im gonna use some perlite and vermiculite, but this grow i just used normal potting soil without any drainigae stuff in it, so yeah that was the problem, i just want to know if i leave of watering them for a while will this fix it, and will they be ok? or should i yank them up and throw them away anad start again? i want to know if they will be ok in the end or am i wasting my time?

Thanks.

Have you checked your roots? How do they smell? Are you aware that there are some strains that have a strong ammonia type smell naturally? Check your buds for signs of grey rot. If there are signs of rot in your buds it may suggest excessive levels of humidity

Good growing

Ok let me explain the plant itself looks completly fine if u looked at it, youd be like "Whoa! nice buds" you can't tell anything is wrong with it unless you hold your nose up to the buds and sniff.. the buds look superb, the leaves are sexy looking :) the only problem is the smell, i took some test buds off it dried them out the smell was horrendous.. but i smoked it and it got me stoned.. the strain is white widow some people say it smells/tastes nice some dont, but i dont think this problem is down to the strain infact im sure that white widow is supposed to smell nicer than this.. it smells of socks which have been worn for about 5 weeks and that are damp.. like a damp dindgy smell, not a skunk smell.. i cant really explain it.. it probably is down to root rot as i have been watering them quite a bit.. i suppose thats a beginners mistake.. and i only planted them in compost nothing else to absorb the moisture.. im asking how can i make them alright again.. how can ifix this?

I can't look at the roots cause there in a big plant pot, i dont really wanna transplant them or anything like that as there half way through flowering.. and i certainly dont wanna loose these babies as they look fucking gorgeous im not biggin myself up the plants look fine.. the smell is horrendous almost makes u not wanna smoke them.. so any ideas?

Peace.

There are lots of seed banks selling ww seeds but they are mostly relatives of ww not pedigree .
More than likely you have some unusual cross of ww.
Root rot is from too much water and not enough air (oxegen) to the roots.
If your soil is wet or very moist let it dry out , better a bit dry than wet.
Root rot will kill the plant usualy a yellowing from the bottom up and leaves dropping off on the way.
If the plant is healthy then keep her going till the end .
If you force dryed the bud that you tested for tast and potency then that will have a harsh cloraphyl tast like a camp fire in you mouth.
So when its ripe dry it properly " i take it you know how " and than give it a go.

Good luck .
