Hey my white widow has been flowering for 46 days, (supposed to take 80 days to fully flower) and the buds have started to fill out, however if i hold my nose up close to the bud and inhale the smell, its disgusting it smells like DAMP weed, kinda like damp wet socks heh :( any ideas why? Im not using any fertiliser just water, i havnt done anything special to them apart from just give them TLC and let them grow, check out previous posts for information on my setup, id really like to know why there is such a horrible smell, and if it will clear up towards then end of flowering? anyway thanks for the help, happy growing!

Peace.

It sound like root rot to me .Just hold off on any kind of watering for a while try to get fan on the soil if possible.

hrm ok, if i keep the fan on the top of the soil to try and dry it out, and if i leave of watering it untill the soil is completly dry, will it fix this problem? will the smell go back to normal, anyone here had this happen to them, any suggestions/adivce would greatly be appriciated, thanks alot, and thanks for your reply.

Peace.

how often have u been watering and what is the temp? if u water before the soil gets dry(i usually water when the soil comes away from the edges) and you have a relatively warm temp, then ur humidity will be quite high. this promotes root rot and mould. as well as letting your soil dry out a little more try and get ur temperature down a bit

Hey the temperature isn't that high, i can't really control it anyway, its in the attic bedroom, in a closet with a fan blowing on the tops of the soil, and i have a huge window in the attic so if it gets too hot i leave it opoen so there is a draft. Yes i belive it was over watering them, i think i watered them a bit too much.. lesson learned, but what do i do now, how can i fix this, or is it the end of my little plants?

I've never tried this personally, but I've read about hydrogen peroxide to give your roots oxygen to save them from root rot. I've heard of some growers using it regularly with their plants, especially in hydro setups.. if its down to life or death with the plants, I would definitely suggest reading this

Hey guys thanks alot for the help and advice, i have taken it all in. Im checking out the info on Hydrogen Peroxide right now, i planted another 6 plants earlier today (3 x white widow and 3 x Bob Marleys Best :) bobs best is 2 strains crossed cant remember which.. so i will take everything i learned from this grow and put it into this one, i have already pout 50/50 perlite with compost, rather than just plain compost hopefully this will make a difference this time round, i'll also be watering them only when the soil is completly dry throughout the whole pot to be on the safe side... as plants in the wild can live without water for long periods of time, anyway guys thanks alot for the help!

Peace.

Howdy MikeOD, got a quick suggestion and a little info for you. Definitely a good idea to augment the makeup of your soil. I like to mix my own but use both perlite and vermiculite. One causes soil to drain better and captures oxgen while the other stores water so that as your soil dries it releases its moisture. This combination keeps the soil dampness problem down to nil. My mix is 60% soil and 20% each of the 'lites' (or in other words, 3 containers of soil to every one of each of the other.) I like to water mine about every other day in most cases, but I use a rule of thumb which is about 1/2 inch of dry soil on top means time to water.

As to the Humidity question, humidity is relative. In other words the warmer the air the more moisture it can hold. Therefore the answer to high humidity is NOT to lower the temperature (this would cause the percentage of humidity to rise which could cause the plants to stop there transpiration process and possibly cause grey mold on buds.)

Buy a reputable grow book, information on these boards is often sketchy! Educate yourself and then others!
