I have severe insomnia, where I wake up several times during the night and can't get back to sleep. I've found that smoking medical mj helps, but I developed an annoying cough and don't want to keep smoking.
So I got an Iolite...but so far, it isn't working for me for 2 reasons:
1.) the high produced by vaping seems to be different -- less "sleepy" -- than smoking. Is this a common experience?
2.) the Iolite seems impractical for middle-of-the-night use. Maybe I'm reading the directions incorrectly, but it seems I am supposed to fill it with butane each time I use it, then wait 5 minutes before turning on, then wait another 3-5 minutes for it to heat up... so basically a 10-minute prep time? And then another 5 minutes after vaping, to wait for it to stop hissing? That's a long time for a middle-of-the-night hit!
The Iolite gets great reviews and seems to have a devoted fanbase...so I'm not quite willing to give up on it yet...although I've had it for almost a year, and hardly ever use it because I can't get the hang of it.
Help, Iolite fans!

1.- Yes, the high is a little different, especially if you're using a fixed temp unit like the iolite. There are at least a couple of sedative compounds missing when you use the low to mid range of temps, so in that respect it's not the best model for you to use for getting to sleep. There are also some non cannabis compounds (toxins) like carbon monoxide and benzene that produce drowsiness. These increase as the temp goes up, so there's another reason that a variable temp unit may be better for your purposes. The vapor high does produce drowsiness, but using lower temps, it takes quite a while to kick in.
2.- The iolite's butane supply is enough for about two hours of vaping. It does depend on how much you're using it during that time, since drawing on it requrires more reheating than if it's just sitting on your table, in idle mode. You can turn the unit on as soon as you load butane, but if you overfill and get that cold butane on the unit, it may take longer to come on. After you flip the switch from 0 to 1, and hit the spark button, it'll be ready to go in no more than a couple of minutes. When mine is already loaded with butane, I can turn it on and get vapor in 90 seconds. The hissing just indicates that the unit is heating/reheating. You can hit it when it's hissing, or quiet. You'll get vapor either way. Do keep in mind that draw speed affects your temp. Draw really hard and fast and you're introducing a lot of cold air. You can drop the temp too much sometimes. It's best to draw slow and easy to avoid overtaxing the unit.
I've been using an iolite for almost 3 yrs., ever since it first came out, and like it as a portable. But it's not the best model for you due to the fixed temp and the fact that you need to wait a couple of min. to start it up. You'd be better off with an AC unit you can raise the temp on, and leave on, ready to hit if you wake up. I'd recommend the Da Buddha. It's under $200 and one of the most popular models on the market. You can leave it on-no problem. eBay has some good prices on it, and vaporizerforweed.net has a 15% sale now, for a $161 price, delivered. It'll go to as high a temp as you need, but I wouldn't recommend starting out high with every bowl. The best way to stretch your supply is to start at a lower temp and move up when you stop getting vapor. High temp vapor will be thick and harsh, and if you start at a high temp, your bowl will be done much quicker-you won't get the most vapor that way. You can revape herb that's already been vaped (called ABV) at a lower temp. What you'd dump out of the iolite, after it's quit providing vapor, will produce more vapor at a higher temp, as long as you use a vape that can be turned up to a hotter temp. So you may want to save your iolite (or whatever model you use at a lower temp) ABV and revape it late at night, for those higher temp compounds that it still retains.
If a portable suits you better, the Magic Flight Launch Box is only $119 and a very popular model-one of the hottest sellers in the portable category. It uses an AA rechargeable battery and will easily go high temp. It'll be harder to use/get the hang of, since the temp is determined by how long you keep the battery pushed in, as well as draw speed and how much charge is left on the battery. This one has an unconditional lifetime warranty, so even if you screw it up yourself, they'll replace it. This model will easily get to high temp range. If you leave the battery connected too long, it'll even reach combustion (never a good idea with a vape-makes it too hard to clean up).

Ever since I got the Launch Box I have never used my IO again as it is such a pita in many ways.
I like the box for the ease of use--just push in the battery to start and let it go to stop the process.
Seems ideal for your needs as it can be used for as little as one hit--starting and stopping is so easy compared to the IO with the gas and the clicking and hoping it starts etc. Oy!

Eff that iolite hun, i spent boocoo bucks on one and its a piece. It worked good the first couple times, then it was all crappy. I wasnt even getting high ne more. Is personally say ur better off with a bowl or something. But it all depends on personal preferance. I've also been smoking very potent stuff for a long while, so crappy bud don't work for me and I have to have a decent amount to feel it. I thaught the iolite would b good for me but I guess not. Lol
