Longmont City Council sez Fuck You to patients!

Go use a grow shop in Boulder and be sure to not buy your non-MJ medications, cars, groceries in another town.

If you grow six plants in your basement, you are completely covered by the Colorado Constitution and you will *never* have to buy MJ again. Anyone that takes a little time to learn can grow their own meds. It is NOT that hard.

LONGMONT -- Longmont`s dispensaries have been told to close up shop.
City attorney Eugene Mei sent a "cease and desist" letter this week to seven medical marijuana dispensaries, warning them to close their business by July 1. A city ordinance that passed May 24 bans marijuana-related businesses from town, including dispensaries and grow operations.

"The City of Longmont intends to prosecute violations to the maximum extent allowed by law," Mei wrote.

The city ordinance allows up to a $500 fine and up to 90 days in jail for each day a medical marijuana-related business is kept open after the ban takes effect.

Under Colorado law, operating a medical marijuana-related business without a state and local

license is a class two misdemeanor. That carries between 90 days and 12 months in prison, or a fine of $250 to $1,000, or both.
The letter was sent Wednesday to Ancient Alternatives, The Blueberry Twist, Colorado Patients First, The Longmont Apothecary, New Age Wellness, Stone Mountain Wellness and The Zen Farmacy.

After the ban passed the Longmont City Council unanimously, dispensary owners and supporters began to circulate a petition, hoping to temporarily suspend enforcement and put the issue up to a public vote in November. The petition requires 5,315 valid signatures to force a referendum; once the petition is turned in, no signatures older than three weeks can be accepted as valid.

In May, Skitt said there was no hard deadline for the petition to be turned in, but that it would be best to have it back by July 1 to allow enough time for review and challenges. Skitt certifies the ballot in September.

It's hard to understand the city council closing down these shops. They could have just passed a moratorium on new shops and kept the old ones open, a more equitable solution for the business owners that wouldn't displace revenue to Boulder and inconvenience patients.
