View Full Version : Help a Hydro Newbie Out
Trying to iron somethings out before I go and make a purchase. I'm looking at buying an Ebb n Flow system.
After the cuttings have roots and there ready to be placed into ebb n flow system, should I use pots filled with Hydroton or something else?
What size pots would should I buy if going straight from cloner to flower? SOG style.
How often would you flood this system?
What size res do I need to support a 4x4 tray?
Lastly what a good bag appeal strain under 10 week flowering?
Anything else concerning the setup would be nice.
Thanks

How often would you flood this system? I don't have the experience to answer this one correctly...
What size res do I need to support a 4x4 tray? You should be okay with 16-20gals. I'd figure 1gal per sq ft, then a couple more if you are going to do more than one plant per sq ft....
Lastly what a good bag appeal strain under 10 week flowering? Purple bud always looks nice and indicas flower under 10 weeks. Grand Daddy Purple is always liked....
Anything else concerning the setup would be nice. What size light you going to have over your tray???
Thanks

No Prob....

Cangroit, thanks a lot.
Each tray (4x4) will have a 600w light over them. Thought about going 3x3 for the 50w per sf, but I've seen some good 4x4 grow with 600's.
I guess what I was trying to say:
With zero veg how many plants would you place in a 4x4 with a 600w? A pound has become my standard.
Also when I take the cutting out of the cloner I basically bury them in the pots with hydroton acting as the soil? Or do they need to have rockwool holding the roots?
As I said before I'm a hydro newbie..

1)Agree with Hydrotron just dont forget to soak it
2)Agree again unless for some strange reason your tray is round then I believe a mixture would work best :)
3)Good start would be 15 mins 4 times a day and adjust from there
4)sounds about right
5)sorry do to recent activity around here I'll stay away from that one
6)Light is a good ?? but how about ventilation and climate control
7)zero veg and less than 10 week flowering= #of plants ........... Lots!
8) you can take a rooted cutting and place directly into the tron just remember roots are extremely delicate so dont "shovel" the tron onto them.
9)what nutes you planning on using??

You could also use rockwool as a medium. They have blocks of rockwoll that fit perfectly into sqaure pots for convience. For sog growing your better off using sqaure pots because you can fit more, round pots leave open space when you put the close together.
Personally i wouldnt go directly from clone to flower in this type of system. I would let the clones veg for a week and let roots get established. Plants spend alot energy on root growth during veg then they do during flower, and your yield will show.
Flood times are all dependent on your medium, temperatures, and plant size. For my rockwool plants during flower i flood 2 times a day at 7 minute intervals. For my hydroton garden i flood 4 times a day for 15 minutes each time. Your going to have to play around with your system and find your own sweet spot.
I would go for a 25 gallon res or bigger. The bigger the res, the more stable the ph and ppm.
tinytoon, what recent activity?? I honestly don't sell, me and my friends just like to smoke a lot, try new strains things like that. Is there something I should know?
I run earth juice, one reason why I chose Ebb n flow. My only options are ebb in flow or nft it seems, due to everything else getting clogged and whatnot.
Honestly I'm trying to get away from one time use media. So I'm trying to stay away from rockwool. The industry already has me buying EJ & soil every two months.

activity was in my own neck of the woods. Was "forced" into retirement but if I was you I would look into something that has a good bud to leaf ratio /Cough cough (Big Bud I read about but cant remember flower time). If you want something that can be reused for media then you already took a step towards Hydrotron. After grow we used to dump it into a big stock pot, boil for an hour and then rinse out. Used same tron for 2 years. RW you have to be carefull with as it holds water really well. I also agree whole heartedly with Dru about veg. 1 week veg will make a huge difference.
Thanks tinytoon for the advice and clearing things up. I was about to pop smoke. (Ninja!)
