View Full Version : CHLORAMINE?

OK I just realized yesterday that the last 7-8 months or so I've been watering incorrectly.:(

I'm a soil grower and I have been using nice clean tap water and preparing it (minus nutes) 48 hrs ahead of use!

But with me being a nubie I was putting the cap on the gallon jugs as soon as I was done prepping the water, therefore not allowing the "chlorine" to evaporate!

When I was told about the 24-48 hour thing, the person who told me said it was about light penetration and time, and what these did together was good for the water.:wtf:

Now I find out it's about letting chlorine escape from the water!!! so the whole time I may have just as well been using water straight from the tap:mad: and the funny thing is, is that my grows have mostly ended up great! (minus some blackberry that hermied, but I blame the strain for that)

So I started investigating the 24-48 hr "theory" and have come to a realization. I believe it was a legitimate point once but unfortunately not any longer!

In denver and the surrounding metro areas, we have something called "chloramine" which in fact DOES NOT EVAPORATE! period!! so in reality the 24-48 hr "theory" is just that! a theory only!

So is the 24-48hr storing unnecessary? or is there other reasons for letting the water sit out? thanks.:smokin:

None!

It has become an Old Wives Tale and no longer applies.
The good news is, Chloramine won't hurt your plants.

I use Chloramine treated water in hydro, coco, and supersoil, right out of the tap.

A fleafart's worth of Chloramine shouldn't even harm the super-organic guys.
Leastways, not as much as letting the water sit and go flat does.
Roots need oxygen.
(It's the dissolved air that outgasses when ya let it sit).

Yeah, chloramine does not evaporate and does not hurt plants in small quantities.

However, a whole-house carbon filter for your H2O is about $100 at Home Depot and takes a couple hours tops to install on your incoming water line. It makes your water drinkable and is better to wash dishes and shower with.

No sense worrying about chloramine, it forms naturally when you mix nutes together (bet the organic guys have ZERO clue about that one.)

most of the water on the front range is fine as is.

ph - now that's some important shit to worry about..

if that's one thing I would try to pass on to new growers, is check ph every day. be a stickler.
