Please do some more reading. I don't know why you are hung up on 12/12 but I will try to explain how it works.

There are 2 distinct stages that a plant goes through. It starts in the vegetative stage where it grows to its mature size.
The next stage is the flowering stage where it develops flowers (female plants) or pollen (male plants).

The plants in nature look at the sun and the change of the seasons to know when to shift from vegetative to flowering. When the days become shorter and the nighttime reaches 12 hours or more, the plants know it is time to start trying to reproduce if they are going to survive as a species and they switch to the flowering mode.

So, in our grow rooms, we simulate nature. Generally gardeners will use 18 or even 24 hours of light during the vegetative stage and will keep the lights on this schedule as long as they wish their plants to keep growing in size. Maintaining this light period can keep a plant in the vegetative stage forever if that is desired.

When we want to start the 8-12 week process of flowering our plants, we simulate nature again and reduce the light periods to 12 hours on, 12 hours off. The plants take it from there and switch to a completely different mode. They continue growing for about 2-3 weeks as the flowers start to develop and then all energy is put into the flowers. We maintain this 12/12 cycle until the end of the plants life at harvest 8-12 weeks later, depending on the strain you are growing.

So, I have several plants growing in my Vegetative room under 24 hour light. When I need to put some more in my flowering room, I will simply move them into the 12/12 light in the flowering room. This gives me total control over how many are actually in the final production stage... and the rest simply will wait for me to move them. It's a great system, and it gives you total control. I hope this helps you to understand the light cycles a bit better.
