Yeah, technologies like genetic engineering and artificial intelligence scare the crap out of me. I would really like humans to evolve naturally rather than turn themselves into "genetically enhanced" cyborgs or whatnot, but I don't really have control over that, so I just hope I'm dead by the time significant progress is made on those technologies.

maybe this is evolution?

i agree with ermitonto, thats some crazy wack stuff right there, and im quite as sure that the first ones being able to climb walls because of their genitically enhanced gecko pads are gonna be the japs, theyve been waiting for this moment for so long for example anime. ill pass on this
I think that's really quite fascinating. Humanity has been evolving itself since the beginning of time - the computer your typing on is an example of human evolution; just to a different extent. But human-kind is driving to extinction, but as ermitonto said - I too hope I'm dead by the time any of this shit happens to a large scale extent that could prove to be the end of our so called 'civilization'.

i find nothing fascinating about anything being done with a remote chance of
"a human brain stuck in a sheeps body"....
i find it scary and a lil gross....
crossing a monkey and a person? i dunno guys.....im pretty solid on my opinion of this one : BAD and opening a door of science we as a society are not yet ready for..

when i read the article there was a big advertisement that said "do you know today's facts? kids who regularly smoke marijuana can develop symptoms of what psychologist call an "amotivational syndrome"

Was I only the only person who didnt find the article controversial? The ultimate goal of the research is to find cures for many of today's deadliest diseases. So what if pigs have human blood, we already share like 80% of the same genes, and that doesnt keep most of us from eating bacon every morning.

We decide where to draw the line, to me ethics have value. Does throwing ourselves away for science really help us? Mabe we can grow & keep hold of what is real, what is important? Important to me, because i descided that, no?
This is not what were doing.
Lets try and take hold of some identity here, this is human evolution. I say we need standards and regulation over science and government, real quick. Regulation to save me. I was raised to need protection, I live in a place where I do. Lets stop this hyperdrive, we've lost control, look at populations, this is madness.
Where is the responsiblilty? Mabe we really should be evolving more. But I do not think irresponsibly throwing our people away, in desire for power and riches is the direction where we can truely take pride in ourselves. Can anyone can hold any pride in the world we live in?
We got this here computer because first we suffocated our neighbours.
: )
What about me, the suffocated?
I think the powers to be are motivated by selfish & childish desires. I would rather die from some ailment that science *could* have prevented, then live by wrecking everything around me.
This is evolution of the viscious, not survivial of the fitest. Through circumstance we lose people, we lose me.
I don't want to be lost. :(

I didn't read the artical, but I can imagine what it says by reading the post.
Let me say this..... my huband is a Type 1 Diabetic and has been since he was 10 years old. Stem cell research may have found a cure for him. In Canada they are testing it now. SO far, so good, they have had much success, and NO more insulin for those taken the treatment. Maybe someday the US will approve the treatment here.
Do you know I coud lose my husband at any given moment? Do you know what he or I would do to save his life? ANYTHING! Science is the key to saving his life, and let me add that if they have to clone a pancaress to save him, then DO IT! We have a child whom I would like to see have a father around for many years to come.
Not to mention the medical expenses we incure everyday. Here are some figure for you, just to keep my husband alive last year we spent, $240 in medicine, $1,200 on medical supplies to run his insulin pump, and Lord have mercy I can only guess at our hospital bills for every reaction he had last year that required a trip to the hospital. I'm sure it was over $5000 or more. Now what could we do with and extra $10,000 a year?
Hmmmm? Buy more weed :p
Anyway, I'm all for any research that involves stem cells and cloneing, b/c someday it just might save the life of someone I hold very close to my heart...... enough said.

Well, I didn't read your post, but I can imagine what it says, so let me just say this. My doctor happens to be a white male, but I would have no problem seeing a woman doctor, or a minority doctor for that matter. In fact, the medical community DOES need more women and especially more african-american women doctors. Science RULES!

just for my own sake I thought I would check out the story, and I didn't read it all, but I was right that it is about stem cell research, I figured as much, but then again, I have a lot at stake so I'm aware of the research. I kinda of gathered from others were posting that it has something to do with it.

LOL, no you were on target smokin'. I just love any form of the statement "I didn't read it, but here's my thoughts on it"- I want to start using it at work and school.

well..nice to see so many people have opinions on this, and we have so many different opinions..it is awesome..
this isnt about stem cell research..i am all for it as i have limited time myelf and would like cures to be found..
this is about regulation and going too far..our society as a whole in this day and age is not ready for producing mass amounts of animals as a human organ farm..hopefully it never will..
my point, and only my opinion, is that regualtion is necessary..science is great and i am a healthcare professional..but science isnt God and there has to be something left for Him to do i guess..things have order, and purpose..
this goes beyond evolution in a huge way..to me that comment over there sticks in my mind cause if we mix a man and a monkey, how is that not going back instead of forward? to me this is hardly comparable, as this is self imposed evolution..scary stuff..
let's take all this money they are using for this ridiculous shit and take care of the hungry people and homeless people and abused people and crime stricken people and sick people who cant get health care and pay our teachers more so our kids get a better education and stop killin each other and better yet pay people in general more so they can be home with their kids and keep em outta the streets runnin as if they were grown..
again, just my opinion..if you dont agree i dont think you are wrong, we all have our own ideas..thanks for all the responses..this was my first thread i started and this has been nice guys..
