Hi, i am new to the forums and need help. i see that someone is selling a 400w HPS/MH for 260 and want to know if it is a good deal. and would it be good as an only light for closet growing? my closet's dimensions are:

(dont know how high)
height X 38" wide X 50" length

so i need to know if this lighting will be a good single light source for growing..also, how many plants will i be able to grow in this small amount of space? i eventually want to try growing sog once i get the hang of it..

will the space at the bottom of the door be good enough for ventilation? will i have to place a fan in the closet in order not to burn down my house?

and lastly, will this light make my electrical bill sky rocket? i do not want to look suspecsious..:)

please help answer whatever questions you can. hopefully i get my questions answered before someone else buys it!lol

oh, sorry, last question.. if this is not good enough, can anyone post a link to some ebay LED lights that are 300 and less for this closet project.thanks

You need to know how high, you can't just use the light above the canopy. You need distance at least a foot between canopy and the light.
I say 4 plants. Depends on strain. If autoflower 8-12 maybe? I'm not familiar with those.
If you use an effective exhaust in the cabinet yes passive intake from the door can be enough.

Go with leds if you worry about the bill.
If anyone tracking your electricity usage (per hour, per day) yes it is possible you can look suspicious.

I will get the exact height when I get home from work. it is a regular bedroom closet, so I would say 8 feet.

as for electricity, I'm not really worried about the cost. I'm just wondering how much higher should I expect my bill to jump a month.20, 30 ,40? if you can just say a rough guess, that'd be fine. thanks

I can't tell how much, we're not using USD around here and we pay yearly :)
Maybe someone else can tell.
If don't, find your electricity company tariffs and calculate.

a 400 watt light will deffinitly work in an area that small. Your going to have to get good ventilation cause an HPS/MH light is gonna create alot of heat. You are going to need fresh air coming into the closet at all times. I personally grow under a 400 watt light and I have 6 plants no problem. A friend of mine did SOG and grew 15plants in the same area that i am growing my 6. My grow area is 3x3x6ft/WxLxH. If you can get an air cooled hood and some ducting I would recommend that to cut down on heat. Thats what i use in my sealed box. Xtrasun makes a great hood that is very inexpensive. I dont think that $260 is that great of a price for a ballast and hood that is used. A really good 400 watt digital ballast is only about $190 online and the xtrasun hood that goes with is is only $90. Lumatek makes a great ballast and their digital ballast do MH and HPS plus they dont flicker. Look up Lumatek 400 watt digital ballast and xtrasun 6in hood. The xtrasun hood is compatible with the lumatek ballast. Heat is going to be the biggest issue in a closet so trust me the air cooled hood is the way to go. a 400 watt light isnt usually that expensive to run. Where i live its costing me about $50 a month to run my light.

oh i was wrong its only $130 for the ballast i was talking about. Heres a link to googles shopping.

Lumatek 400 W 120/240V Digital Ballast (http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=lumatek+digital+ballast&hl=en&prmd=ivnsfd&resnum=3&biw=1280&bih=737&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=9049518583951857712&ei=Z8BCTe_MNpDAsAPB-JzyCg&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CF0Q8wIwAA#)

heres the hood

Xtrasun 6 White Reflector - Air Coolable XT6AC (http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&biw=1280&bih=737&q=xtra+sun+6in&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=9994655005726891852&ei=4b9CTdvKCpKosAOY9ancCg&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CFcQ8wIwAA#http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&biw=1280&bih=737&q=xtra+sun+6in&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=9994655005726891852&ei=4b9CTdvKCpKosAOY9ancCg&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CFcQ8wIwAA#)

So if you buy a ballast for $130 and your hood for $80thats only $210 for new equipment. So i guess that answers your question about that light being a good price.

I would recommend buying a package deal: ballast, reflector, cords, sockets, lamp. Just plug it in & grow...
