I want to keep this as a "mother plant" and keep it for taking cuttings butttt
im as to what I know I won't get nearly as much of a yield with the clone as compared to the seed right? And if I keep the plant 18/6 (on/off) would it start to bud? How would I figure out the sex of it if it is still in veg? (Has been in veg for about 5 weeks and have transplanted to a larger pot. Also I don't think the stems coming off the main stem is big enough for me to take a cutting yet :(:wtf:)
There's a few questions in there :stoned: thanks to anyone who takes the time to read/ answer. :)

put the mother into flower for about 2 weeks, let it show you it's sex, then turn lights back to flower. Takes about 3 weeks total, no clones, no damage, easy peasy.

But I have read "playing around with the lights" can stress the plant.
Would taking a clone be my only option?
Do I just take a fresh razor blade, cut the stem (clone), trim the end at 45 degree angle, put in water? or soil? and then 12/12 light?
Can someone just confrim the ending of what I THINK is supposed to be done?:)...the part with question marks and maybe confirm the rest
THANKS!

Take a cutting and flower the cutting to tell sex.. That way you won't have to bring the mama back from flower.

Wow...not to hate, but ever heard of preflowers? Inducing flower to check for sex is completely unnecessary and retarded. Google "cannabis preflowers"...you should find what your looking for...

Unless it's an autoflowering strain you would have to induce flowering for preflowers to show. It's either pistils or nanners.. How's that for retarded? You have'nt a clue!

Take the cutting and let it root... Veg it for a week and.... If it's a girl you got 2 mama's...

I've always taken cuttings from favored strains so I've always seen preflowers as the clones are genetically mature, but I'm curious too...
If you left a plant (from seed) in veg for a long period of time, wouldn't it show preflowers at some point?

Pink. yes it would....... I've grown 100's of verities over the last 30+ years and 100% have shown preflowers [including males] shortly after the branches start alternating....sometimes sooner....

Okay, cool. Thats what I was thinking. So preflowers aren't a way to determine sex?
I can't solve your problem, Poker2, but I remember being stuck with this question when I first started growing. I just germinated a variety of seeds for my first batch, and placed them into flower (as normal). As soon as the plants showed their sex, I simply took 1/2/3 cuttings off each female plant (with careful considerations) which then became the next batch. This is efficient because the cuttings are sexually mature from when they become established. I still grow this way too!
However, you could change this slightly and, instead of taking cuttings from each female plant you germinate, simply remove one female from flower (once it's shown sex), place it in veg for a week allowing it to recover and use her as your mother plant.
Hope I've helped in some way!

No, Preflowers ARE the way to determine sex. I've found it takes about a month and a half under 18/6 from seed to show sex on most of the strains I'm growing.
I actually KEPT a male for breeding purposes, and he started OPENING pollen sacks in my VEGE room!!!! Which believe it or not pollenated one of my mothers resulting in a viable seed! Not quite the way I wanted to do it..... nor a cross I was wanting to do, but it happened none the less! :hippy:
Be patient with your plant, OR take a cutting, and root it in your flowering room. I've never liked using a light cycle to root clones, (always done 24-0 for rooting) But it's supposed to work just the same. By the time it's rooted it'll be showing sex.
