Boys and Girls,

Here is my attempt at a primary grow log. Mostly, I will use this to see if I am on my way to becoming a successful gardener. Feel free to leave helpful advice, constructive commentary, and useful links.

Setup:
Veg
3x3 Grow Tent
Lumigrow ES 330 LED
Roots Soil

I will post my flower setup as that gets closer to completion.

I dropped seeds in rapid rooters, and so far have 8/10 pandora's box and 1/5 pineberry. I'm hoping at least two more pineberry come up, as none of these are feminized.

Here are some initial pictures. In my next germination, I think I will include the use of a 1% Hydrogen Peroxide Solution--for more sterilization. Also, I'm not sure just how old those pineberry seeds are. The company is now out of stock, and won't be getting more any time soon. We shall see if any more come up later today. We are closing in on day 12 of germination.

[attachment=o261955]

I've used bottled water so far, and will be switching to my RO water. I have a stealth 100 and an oxygen bubbler attached. I will be adding cal/mag as necessary.

As a side note, I made a mistake by stacking the germination station under the veg setup without a light shield. That has been remedied.

Thanks for looking!

Okay,

So I am not necessarily the greatest blogger so far. I can't even figure out how the pics can be rotated...they are from my iPhone and looked correct when viewed on my computer. Oh well, sorry for the neck spasms.

After about four days of being in 1 gallon pots, with roots soil and water, I have some beautiful plants. Although, some of the leaves seem to be turning a little bit. The largest plant (I have a feeling it's a male) did this first, and I actually touched the leaves to feel what was going on. I hope I didn't hurt the plant, as the leaves still have a kind of warp to them. I am conscious of overwatering and removed the variable of having a different light underneath the plants (on a different time interval--24/7 instead of 18/6).

I've been toying with different light heights, given it's an LED with the equivalency of 400w MH. I've done much reading on this light, and the few grow logs I've found recommended 18" to 24" I don't want stretching, but that doesn't seem an issue so far.

I'm hoping to find my old digital camera, so I don't have to rely on my phone for pictures. It will also help with questions, I'm sure.

With the snow, I will most likely have updates again tomorrow. I will take suggestions, though. Thanks!

Keep warm and baked.

P.S. This grow is legal under Rhode Island's Medical Marijuana Program.

Okay,

Just a very quick update. Here is a YouTube video of what we've got so far. The remaining germinating seeds had to go...I think I know what to do differently in the future. I have a couple of freebie feminized seeds germinating now, and hopefully they will take off. They will replace whatever males come from the PB and pineberry.

Enjoy the video, and please give me some feedback to the leaves turning. I have done a lot of reading and no growing. No pics look like that, but experience is the best teacher.

Looking good man...I think once you get a couple sets of leaves the twisting will go away.its probably just how those first lower leaves grew.

Well, I've got some updates for you all.

Three days ago, I watered using RO water with Cal/Mag. Two days ago, I applied a top dress of powdered dolomite lime to each plant and moistened (I didn't want to overwater). I had tested the runoff since the last update, and the pH was coming in around 5. Looking up Roots Organic, I found that the soil runs acidic and definitely requires dolomite lime mixed in pre-potting. Now I know for the future.

Yesterday, I was pleasantly surprised by the babies. They are starting to look very good, and even have a delicate aroma. I've got 3x3 at this point, though they are still needing to be sexed when ready.

They are ten to twelve days having been transplanted. When would be the appropriate time to top them? I know they should have at least a few sets of leaves, so I'm thinking another week or two...just before they go to the finishing containers.

Today, I'm hoping to transplant three feminized Smile from Kannabia--they were freebies from Attitude. This will put me at my limit--12--but I'm sure I will not have twelve throughout this entire grow--some will be male, some will be lost due to noob attrition. If I end with four or five keepers, I will be very happy.

Enjoy the pics and Youtube links. Feedback is always helpful, as is the encouragement.

This one is having the most trouble. The only set of leaves to droop, retains water more, and has those marks more than any other plant.

On the good side, the two slowest developers have really made progress. Even the one having trouble opening has developed a lot, since I helped to open the initial two leaves. The seed casing didn't pop off all the way--it was very interesting to see and participate in.

Always remember your Cal Mag!!!! R/O water needs it....also track a R/0 ppm/ec/tds reading directly after making the water that way you will be able to gauge the efficiency of your R/O membrane after time...they do "wear out" or become less efficient. Love the hues of the LED, I will definitely roll a fatty and chill by the smoke watching this grow get beastly....Very grow set up, sterile and neat.....

Thanks, Oldhead for the Cal/Mag reinforcement. Last night, I invested in a fancy electronic pH meter and it's the dog's bollocks. Much better than guessing the droplets. I haven't tested the water pre-watering, but that is a great suggestion. Next week, or so, I plan on moving to the super soil...and the pH problems should disappear.

As another observation, I have noticed roots popping through the bottom of the faster plants. Now, most have some protrusion. I've read not to worry about them, that they will air prune. I am also more wary of leaving water in the trays--I am draining off.

Today or tomorrow, I am going to top the larger plants (attached). These tops I am going to place in Rapid Rooters soaked in Clonex Solution and Thrive Alive B1 solution. I will use sterilized scalpels, 91% Isopropyl alcohol, and clonex gel. After the initial cut, I will then make a 45 degree cut under water. It was also recommended to spray with Aqua Shield.

These tops will be placed under 12/12 lighting and humidity dome--just 2 T4 fluorescents used for germination. I figure that should be enough light to get them to sex. I have read some techniques to aid this process, but any feedback would be helpful. At what point can the sexing cuttings be taken out of the dome--a few days?

I don't want to set up my HID lighting just for sexing. Once I find the females, I get send the males on to better places.

Glad y'all like the set-up, and I hope the video links are enjoyable.

--CD

P.S. The smell is faint and delicious.

P.P.S. I hope I am not rushing the topping. I have read suggestions on waiting for seedlings to grow 4-5 internodes. Are the internodes when the stems make a V from the main stem, or when they begin to alternate on the main stem?

CuriousDaimon

The topping adventure has had to be postponed because I do not have the room to set up a 12/12 section right now. Once a lead paint inspection occurs next week, I can get the soon-to-be-flowering tent up and put the tops in there.

In the mean time, we have had some phenomenal development. I will say this--No more Roots Organic alone. I will be cutting it with FF Light warrior to balance it out a little, as well as a full cup of powdered dolomite lime. The TGA seeds love the roots, but the others...not so much. You be the judge.

Since I won't be using my 2T5 for the tops, I moved it into the veg room. I know this will ruin any hopes of a "pure" LED run. However, I'm a noob who hasn't grown any medicine. When I have my own, I can invest the time to run a more methodical study.

Both lights are about 18" away, with the light covering the entire canopy. It looks much different with the white light, but the babies still get the LED good-ness.

As an update about the Lumigrow situation, they have been extremely helpful. Unfortunately, the replacement unit was DOA. That has been sent back and I am awaiting a working replacement--I think shipping was to blame. I am very pleased with the results of 3/4 working LEDs. I can't wait to see full-blow.

We have topped the babies, and they look great.

I topped in the morning, after feeding the night before. Of course, I nicked a few shoots I wasn't aiming for but they healed great and are bushing nicely.

Enjoy some pics, and I will transplanting at least the four largest plants to the super soil tomorrow or Monday. I mixed the super soil yesterday and will turn it one more time before the transplant. Is 48 hours enough time for the plants to heal from topping before transplanting?

I also had to raise the lights somewhat. I hadn't checked the distance, and I wonder if that was affecting vertical growth.

Keep it easy guys and girls!

Hello Girls and Gents,

So, we've had a few changes to the veg tent. Four transplants (3x Pandora's Box and 1x Pine Berry) have moved to the floor and I brought the remaining plants down as well. I originally had a small table for the 1 gallons, but I was displeased with the light distribution and uneven canopy.

Also, I had moved a power strip outside of the tent. This remarkably dropped the temperature at least three to four degrees. In addition, the humidity has gone up to 55-60%. Today, I moved the power strip back into the tent to add some heat. To those who look at LEDs, please take into consideration the loss of heat in winter time. I'm hoping that bringing the temps back up to higher 70's will raise humidity. I am not a physicist, so I may be wrong in this assumption.

My pH runoff is disaster. 5.3 for the supersoil. In a bunch of threads, people don't seem to worry about pH. Also, this might change as the plants start feeding off the supersoil and not just the buffer. Again, I may be wrong in this assumption. I am contemplating investing in some pH UP, and would love some feedback on the stuff in soil.

Three weeks and counting until flowering begins, and I can't wait to start taking some clones of these.

I'll post some updates of the results of these changes over the weekend to compare the changes I made today.

One love, expand the minds, and open the hearts.

I've got so many relevant pictures, I figured I would give you two posts to contain the deliciousness.

I like the feedback for the Beast. I would judge that two of the Pandora's Box are demonstrating taller growth. The third is shorter and bushier. I'm just waiting for sex to demonstrate, although the biggest one has some bulges that might be male pre-flowers. The others are showing more hair-like structures. Of course, I am considering that these might be my own projections.
:stoned:

The two largest PB got some LST today. I pinched the largest stems towards the top and lower down. The plants responded well, without drooping too much or breaking. I could NOT believe the delicious smell that remained on my fingers after doing this. Oh my word, these are delicious plants. If the smoke is anything like the smell of these babies' ichor... I'm in for a treat. Pineberry and the bushy PB didn't seem to need LST at this time. Once the canopy is under control, I might follow up those.

In rearranging the outer room surrounding the tents, I figured I would trim some of the shriveled and dead leaves from the bottom of these plants. When I checked again later that day, they all just looked brighter and more vibrant. I think I will be more on top of pruning.

Finally, I topped the three Smile which really took well to it. These feminized are growing beautifully and I might take a clone from the best growing one. These will be about two weeks behind the first batch, but have a shorter flowering time. We'll see when I decide to flower them.

My next post isn't going to have any words, just the pics. I hope you enjoy the sneak peek at the bud room. Those hoods will be housing 600w HPS (1200w) all together, air-cooled by the 6" fan. The tent (hopefully) will be sealed with CO2, with the surrounding room cooled by a 10" exhaust attached to Can Filter. Warm, filtered air goes up through the attic.

Keep warm and safe in the snow, kiddies.

Thank you all for the positive feedback.

Just a quick update w/o pics today.

Unfortunately, the hydrohut 3x3 had a zipper malfunction. Thankfully, I don't have to worry about light leaks at this time. It is a major annoyance, but the fellows at Hydro Earth are going to replace it through the manufacturer. The customer service has been great, even with closer to retail prices.

I also transplanted the last two Pandora's Box to the five gallon super soil smartpot. The tent is getting pretty crowded now, but I hope the babies will be okay for another two weeks or so of veg. I am getting tremendous vertical growth with the new, fully functioning LED.

I had to bust out the dehumidifier in the surrounding room, which added to the heat (high 70s to 80s) but lowered the humidity back to 40-50% in the tent. After moving the power strip back outside the tent, I hope the temps will plateau in the 70s. I am no physicist, but I have read that high humidity and fluctuating temps could result in mildew. Any suggestions would be taken gratefully.

I finished the light setup for the bud tent. 1200w, air-cooled hoods, HPS bulbs. Everything worked today and I cheered. The next step this coming week will be the CanFan exhaust setup for the whole room.

Not to be a snob, but I really think I will be sticking with TGA genetics. They are extremely hardy, and have an online rep for excellent smokes. We'll see this May if that's the case. I'm attaching a link to one of Subcool's youtube videos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vP8SCvOxVyc)that is a shameless plug, I'll be blunt. But the virtues he touches upon about the growers he associates with is very important to us MMP patients. I think we could use this inspiration to learn from the plants that tend to us.

Well, Well, Well...

We've got some sexin' going on!

I found my first definitive hairs on one P.Box this morning and a couple of big ol' nut-sacks on the Pineberry. Sadly, the Pineberry will no longer be a part of my garden. Hopefully, I will cross paths with him again and not have to say goodbye so soon. Not for nothing, but the sentimentality I have developed for these plants in a short-time is heart warming and pleasant. I can't wait to sit back and enjoy the smoke.

Then, tonight I discovered (what I believe) to be hairs on the other two established P.Box--not the recent transplants. If all looks kosher, we've got three beautiful female Pandora's Boxes. And...drum roll...the Beast is (I think) female. It will be another day or too for those preflowers to be definite, but I've got a good feeling.

The other two P.Boxes are settling in nicely in the Super soil. The whole unit is coming along nicely, with the replacement HydroHut coming on Wednesday. I will also be able to set up my CanFan exhaust in order to get the temps down from low 80s. At least the dehumidifier is working perfectly, with humidity around 40%.

I think I'm sticking with bubbled tap (if the latest waterings look good) or spring water from the local filling station. This might change once we hit flowering, but the five gallons use less than 1 gal of water for feeding...at least at this time. We'll see what happens under 1200watts and CO2.

Enjoy the video and the pics. I think I'll be LSTing some more tomorrow, and maybe tying them down. Is bondage better left until flowering begins, or can it start during Veg?

Peace (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1hDbb6GFlk),

Last night, amid shorn knuckles and wet feet, the bud tent was finalized and three huge girls were moved from 3x3 to 5x5. Of course, it is a little tighter in the tent than anticipated with all the other toys taking up space. Fortunately, I have around thirty days to rework the space before I have to worry about adding any more plants.

So, where were we? I was forced to top the girls this past Wednesday after deciding my first attempt was not giving me good vibes. Also, the girls were just going nuts putting on height. This way, they stopped just around 24". I've got clones of the big ones in a humidity dome under T5 fluoros. We'll see how they turn out. I'd be happy if even one or two took. Those bubble cloners look mighty nice at this point. :wtf:

So, today I will be transplanting the Smile to super soil and making sure the bud tent programming is up to snuff. I've got CO2 pumping in around 1500 ppm, the portable AC kicking on at 87, and the portable heater for the daytime chilliness... if necessary. Of course, I forgot to put the thermometer /hygrometer in last night...so I'll have to see the numbers tomorrow.

The exhaust from the portable AC goes into a closet that has the attic hole through which the room exhaust blows. The Can Fan 75 hooked to the 10" vortex sucks all the heat/moisture up there--scrubbed clean. No more stink! Also, the fan is hooked to a control switch so it doesn't go full blast. That was dropping the the temps in the surrounding room too low. Now, I have no need for the dehumidifier, but it is there just in case the humidity increases in the next few months.

All in all, I'm pretty psyched about the set-up. Of course, the speedbumps will not stop.

For example, my pH was definitely causing some issues so I've gotten earthjuice organic up and down. Ha! I felt like the muppet chemist, figuring out the correct amounts. UGH! Trial and a LOT of error, my friends.

Now, I've got it down a little more and the babies are enjoying their 7.0 tap water. I might go back to the RO, but I like not having to add the cal/mag. The plants seem to like the dissolved content as well. I bubble for over 24 hours, of course.

So now, we play the waiting game for about nine weeks. I've hear that CO2 speeds up the growth, so maybe 63 days will be the money shot. Around day 30 I will be topdressing with super soil, since they are huge and in 5 gal smart pots.

Enjoy the goofy video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAyagFAreB8). I will be cleaning up those electrical cords tonight, they look worse than they are. I wanted to make sure no amounts exceed the amp ratings of each room. The hogs are extended outside, into different rooms, so no circuit has too much. Of course, everything is a work in progress.

I'll take any and all advice. Remember, I am newb hear me roar.

Peace,

Seems like a few post were lost from this thread during the forum upgrade. Hows this all working out for you CuriousDaimon?

I saw the highflyer use this trick, and figured it would be appreciated by all.

Sorry I can't write more today, but the brain power has to be put to other uses.

One quick question:

Will the red heat lamp interrupt the sleep cycle? If so, my friend suggested a fish/lizard tank heater that could be hooked up the "brain." Let me know what y'all think, pretty please.

Just to let y'all know. All is well.

I just got back from California and the garden was well tended. I got fed up with the forum after those posts were eaten, even though it was "post at your own risk." I switched to RIU and never made it back...there is a larger SS community to answer the Q's. You can find me in the RI section.

I have to catch up in fourth dimensional reality before I can come back for reflection amongst peers in two dimensions.

Fare thee well, and I will lurk until time is granted for more.
