View Full Version : Why should i vote?

I am 19 almost 20 and i am not a registered voter and honestly don't think i will ever be. I don't see a reason to vote and i guess that's just because I'm young and in college. Aside from medical marijuana or legalizing it i don't have a political opinion. I was always told only talk politics with family, and my family doesn't talk politics.
So my question for you guys is simple as the title. Why should i vote?

The main reason for me is because many good people who came before you fought and died for your right to vote, and to honor them and their lives you must take advantage of this... to not do so is to discount the significance of their lives and in doing so, to say that you are also insignificant.
Another big reason is that you represent many groups. Your age group, your gender, your occupation, your education level, etc. etc. Issues come up that affect one group or another. If any politician ever got wind that a particular group was mis-represented by the voting public because of apathy, can you imagine how that group's wants and needs would be totally ignored? It is your duty to be ready to hold politicians to the causes that are important to their home constituents and make them fear the consequences of mis or under representing you.
I could go on... but these are two big reasons to vote. I hope I have convinced you to exercise this right in the next election.

Do your duty, citizen.
Yes, it is your duty plus you should vote because it will make you feel proud that you did. You will always remember the details of it. I remember the very first time I voted. I was living in So Cal and voted for some dude from Arkansas for President because I just knew he would legalize herb in his first week .... didn't quite work out that way. yeah, I hear you it is discouraging many times but it is our nation and our states and our local gov'ts. somebody has to keep an eye on what they're doing.

Feel proud? I would probably be ashamed of myself bro! Anyways, with the way this country ahh run, dun matter if I vote or not, a Republican or Democrat will be elected, and I'll have wasted the time spent with the voting process. Got a lot better shit to do with my time, and I can effect much greater change with my day to day daily works than I could by voting for someone who is not even on the ballot, or aware that someone would be voting for them. Then again I could luck out, something go wrong with the voting system, and the one guy I voted for who has one vote will be named winner, but alas, what are there chances that there will be an error with the voting system during a major election..... :D

I understand that it is my right and privilege as a citizen to vote. But the part i don't get is why. I mean in this time of day atleast 60% of the people in politics are corrupt. I would vote if we as Americans did a cleansing of the government. Why should i vote for someone who says they will do the things i believe for but then get into office and do whatever the hell the want to make buck. It makes me sick.
That is why i asked why should i vote.

Here in America just at the Federal level there are 435 congress people and 100 senators. You are saying that 321 of them are corrupt. :( God help us if that were true, but thankfully it is not. Yes, there are a few career politicians out there and a few who get caught doing bad things... but overall we have a lot of fine people that you never hear about who were elected by the people in their districts because they had something to say... some message... some plan to make things better.
These people gave up their real lives, their real jobs, left their families and friends and went to Washington to make a difference. These are the people in our government. They are you, and me and Joe or Carol next door. This is what makes America great. We have a representative government.
It your vote that puts them there, it is your vote that keeps them on track, and it is your vote that brings them back home if they lose their way. Exercise that vote by getting to know those running in your district.. who they are ... what they believe in. Don't listen to the nay sayers who tell you that all politicians are bad, it simply isn't true.
Become a part of the system and take a stand for what you believe in! This is your right as an American and if you don't at least try to influence a small part of the system with your vote, then frankly... you have no right to complain about anyone who is involved with it. If you want to be a non-participant, that is your right. But then you also give up the right to complain about the system that the rest of us participate in.

I wish it were true. We have no real representative government. It was meant that anyone, from the little guy to the big guy could have a voice. The voice of the little guy has been stifled. More lawyers and lobbyists and lackeys then what the Founding Father's intended. So, yes the system is corrupted and polluted with money to where the shopkeeper, the real small business owner, or small family farmer couldn't get elected.
The large majority of elected officials are parasites bouncing from one lackey job to another, continually fucking up the system. I have no hope left for the future of this country in its present state and elected officials. Greedy, self-serving assholes. :twocents: :lol5:

I'm not talking about being proud of who you voted for, I mean hell I voted for Mama Bear :icon401: I was talking about feeling good about yourself. or just blow it off and get high. fuck I don't care. :rastasmoke: truth is I never voted again after voting for Clinton in '92 until 2008.

My grandfather fought and died in WWII to keep the Japanese out of Canada also, but that seems to have failed. (Tongue in cheek here, folks--at least half).
I have a political opinion on just about everything, and usually a fiery one at that, and I vote out of a nagging sense of duty, but I'm also very, very skeptical as to how much it really matters. There's never a candidate, here or if I was American, certainly not there, who reflects my own views to any large extent, and so I give my vote to the Green party to try to earn them an extra seat or two to keep us from raping the Arctic.
If you don't have any real political knowledge, you shouldn't vote. You're not doing your country any favours with your vote of ignorance.

I don't recall anything about that, but it seems irrelevant--you can nitpick all you want, but environmentalism is a very good thing when hypocrisy is kept out of it, and I'll trust almost the entire scientific community over Rush Limbaugh and his ilk anyday.
My grandfather fought and died in WWII ....
God bless him, we owe a lot to that generation.

First of all, fuck Global warming, but I really love this argument (it is almost as stupid as a snowstorm being proof positive).. They were predicting over periods of hundreds of years , not 1, not 10, 100 that Oceans will rise.. And then some doof buys a beach front house and every mouth breather in the country is like LOOK PROOF POSITIVE IT IS FAKE!! How about you stick to science for disproving a scientific theory instead of something as idiotic as this? :twocents:

...and thankfully there are more out there who do keep up the good fight than those who have given up. Slowly but surely, progress is made and good wins out over evil. The founders were wise and our constitution is a marvel. Over time, "we the people" are heard in this system. I vote because I really believe that.

theres no point in voting..while the main partys man hav little rows over the small things there all in bed with each other workin to one main goal
well, I can think of one good example where voting paid off ... Arizona last fall. med use won by like 400 votes. what if those 400 people had decided to blow it off that day? :twocents:
other than that, yeah, I'm among the walking dead, too, I'm afraid. I voted '08 cause I thought McCain would make a decent commander in chief but before that Bubba kinda turned me off the whole presidential voting thing. He won but he arrested more cannabis users that any of the assholes before him. :wtf:

Those who don't pay attention to politics are ruled by lesser men than themselves.
I am not sure who said it but I believe it. Voting only takes a little while and it is an important action. There are people in many parts of the world who do not get to vote and who do not get to determine their own fates. Consider yourself lucky for having the oppurtunity.

Yes, I agree.
You have to educate yourself, and not thru the media, of course. But, voting, of course, is just one tool.
Someone could also run for office themselves, maybe even as an independent, like Loretta Nall did in Alabama. She formed the US marijuana party and ran for governor and actually started picking up traction in that election. She just went around to all the VFW's and talked to them about why she believed the laws were unjust. She actually came close to winning.

I am also young and I will never vote...reason being...it's pointless. Your voice means nothing. You may THINK you're making a difference..but the sad truth is you are not....They will elect who they want to win and that's that. This is a corrupt world my friend. Fuck it.

Your vote matters at the local level, concentrate on your city, county and state leaders.
That big political roadshow they two main parties put on every 4 years, your vote matters much less there, if at all.
So worry about the people from your communities that you send to the show, not who they get to host the thing every 4 years.
