DAY 1
Let me first start of by saying that this thread is for medicinal knowledg and not for the people growing to make a living as a drug-dealer.
This is a grow that has been in progress for 74 total days today. I was going to wait until the grow was over to log it but I just can't wait. This is not my first time around but it is my first for this particular setup. From here on out, every new thread by me will represent a new day of the log, besides the responses to other people that may want to follow along for the ride. Here goes!!!
Strains: Clones (Very rough shape when I got them, almost got tossed)
Plant A:Skunk
Plant B:Skunk/Haze
You will also notice four other plants (from random seed) involved in this grow for a short period. They turned out to be males and hermies.

Day 21 Flower
1st picture is of plant B Skunk/Haze at 55 inches tall from top of dirt.
4th picture is just part of the short stocky plant A Skunk at 33 inches tall.

Forgot to mention I dropped four unknown seeds in to water on day one to germinate. All four seeds cracked and showed tails on day 2. I planted the four seeds in 16oz cups and coverd them with plastic for a greenhouse-affect. Clones are not showing any different signs.
jon420
12-18-2010, 05:07 AM
All 4 seeds sprouted on night 3. I removed the plastic from the tops.
jon420
12-18-2010, 05:11 AM
Clones seem to have taken well to the transplant and are showing new growth. The 4 seedlings are doing great.
jon420
12-18-2010, 05:19 AM
Sorry about the gap there but nothing special went on and growth was slowed due to PH problems and too many nutes.
You will see in the last picture that I fimmed one of the seedlings.
jon420
12-18-2010, 05:23 AM
Transplanted clones and seedlings to 3 gallon buckets and I puntured many holes in the bottoms for air.
jon420
12-18-2010, 05:31 AM
Tossed a seedling today due to stunted growth. I also wanted to mention that I put 2 plants in one bucket to document the difference in growth. I wanted to show how another plant will conquere another.
1st pic is the 2 together
2nd pic is the Fimmer
3rd is side shot of clones doing well
jon420
12-18-2010, 05:35 AM
Up until today I was running the light cycle at 22/2. It is now at 18/6.
jon420
12-18-2010, 10:54 PM
Fimmed again, the same plant as last time. Growth between the 2 in the same pot seems to be about the same at this point. Been having problems with nute-burn and found that the plants do not like added nutes in veg. stage with this soil. The soil PH is also very high and I am flushing with PH adjusted water only. Plan to water with PH adjusted water through the rest of the veg.
I had to tie up plant B Skunk/Haze because it was growing out of control.
jon420
12-18-2010, 11:00 PM
Just an update on what has happened over the past few days. You can see that one of the plants in the bucket with 2 has started to take more nutes than the other.
jon420
12-18-2010, 11:05 PM
Over the period of this grow you will notice that I add lights. I started with less lights than I listed above and I will end the grow with what is listed above.
jon420
12-18-2010, 11:16 PM
Update on growth and some pictures to enjoy.
jon420
12-18-2010, 11:25 PM
I cut the weaker of the 2 plants down today. Still having problems with nute burn but only the tips of the leaves and a little bit of stunted growth has come from this, nothing major.
The fimmed plant is 9"in tall
The plant alone now is 11"in tall
Plant A Skunk is 18"in tall
Plant B Skunk/Haze is 27"in tall
jon420
12-18-2010, 11:33 PM
Soil PH is now a steady 6.5-7 and the nute-burn has cleared up just fine and growth has really taken off. At this point I have about 75% of the lights installed.
Plant A Skunk 20.5"in tall
Plant B Skunk/Haze 34"in tall
Fimmed plant 12"in tall
Other plant 16"in tall
jon420
12-18-2010, 11:45 PM
Lights switched to 12/12 today. I am now using the MG BB at 1/4 strength and working my way up from there. I will be increasing 1/4 tbls every other water until last 3 weeks, which I will then start with the Beastie Bloomz.
I will also be looking closely for the sex of the 2 plants grown from seed now.
Plant A Skunk 25"in tall
Plant B Skunk/Haze 40"in tall
Fimmed plant 15.5"in tall
Other plant 23"in tall

As you can see in the first and second pictures, the fimmed plant has hermied and got tossed today.:(
Still not for sure on the other unknown at this point but it seems to be showing the same growth on the nodes as the fimmer did.
jon420
12-20-2010, 02:42 AM
Update on growth:
Plant A Skunk is still about 26"in but it is filling out a lot.
Plant B Skunk/Haze is now 45.5"in tall.
Unknown plant is 25.5"in tall and showing signs of "pollen" sacks:(.
jon420
12-20-2010, 02:45 AM
Unfortunately I was right about the pollen sacks. I had to get rid of the beautiful unknown plant today. I was not waiting any longer and taking any chances.
Made it to 29"in and looks great but is deffinately male.:(
jon420
12-20-2010, 02:53 AM
Plant A Skunk is 30"in tall
Plant B Skunk/Haze is 52"in tall

GJ Jon
Yea, Plant B was in worst shape of the 2. Both clones sat in a buddy's closet in the dark for nearly a week. I am quite shocked that they both are doing as well as they are. I am exceptionally happy with plant B. The Skunk/Haze combination really makes a great plant and the flowers are very dense already.
Thanks for watching:thumbsup:
jon420
12-21-2010, 05:17 AM
The flowers are really starting to develop nicely and growth is very strong healthy. Still feeding 1/4 strength Bloom Booster every other water. Watering 1/2 gallon per plant every other day now.
jon420
12-21-2010, 05:22 AM
Plant B Skunk/Haze is now in its resting place and will remain where it is until done. Too big to move around. 53"in tall
Plant A Skunk 31"in tall
jon420
12-21-2010, 05:28 AM
The crystals are starting to multiply very quickly now. It looks like the weed fairy is dusting my crops:thumbsup:
Growth is very dense and strong.

Plant growth has slowed down bud the flower production is increasing as it should.
Plant A Skunk is 33"in tall
Plant B Skunk/Haze is 55"in tall
jon420
12-22-2010, 05:27 AM
Not much to say. Girls look great and buds are really starting to fill out. The leaves around the buds are becoming very crytalized like the buds.

For the first time growing this particular way, I'd have to say it's been great success. I also got a chance to learn a lot more about growing since this is not my usual way of doing so. Thanks for the comment!!!

Hey everyone, thanks for following along. Everything is going very smooth still and I am planning the next grow now. I am looking for some suggestions on strains to use. I plan to order some seeds from Attitude here soon. I have some strains in mind but I would like some input on others? I am interested in the "put me on my ass" strains. The strains that can put a veteran smoker on their ass.:smokin: I'd of course like a big yeild but the potency is much more important to me. Let me know what you think is worth the time to grow. Thanks!!!
Will be the same exact setup but vegging will be reduced to 35 days from sprout to avoid too much over-growth. The grow area will not be expanded any larger and I am going to attempt 8-12 plants,,,, (maybe SOG/SCROG).

My girls are at that stage where growth is not as noticeable but trichome development and hardness is really taking over. Can't wait for the next growth-spurt. I also noticed the first couple, of many hairs changing colors. I use a 60X magnifier to keep a close whatch on the trichomes and so far they are all clear still with huge rounded heads.
Borrowed this picture from another person (thanks) to show what development looks like:smokin: The trichomes on my girls are much fuller and happier looking than this picture but its just an example:thumbsup:

They may not like it for a few days, but once you've relieved them of those leaves taking up too much energy to try to keep them going ... they'll put much more energy into the fruiting. Great call on your part to remove them IMHO.

Wow. I have never done this before, I always think..."If I only removed those big leaves the flowers would get so much more light. But then I think, "It would take so much energy for those plants to heal themselves if take big leaves off" Always been a little worried but,I guess no guts no glory.
Have you guys done it both ways and found better results by removing the leaves or is it just the way you have learned?
I'm very to tempted to try it.

For me personally, it does wonders for my plants. I have gone without pruning before but found the end yield to be so much poorer and the buds weren't nearly as snowy, dense and compact. So, I have stayed true to pruning a few times during their lifetimes.
On youtube type a search for marijuana pruning or better yet, do one for arjan greenhouse seeds ... he and his partners are, IMHO, the best of the best of the Dutch growers with numerous Cannabis Cup winners and placers under their belts and have been generously sharing their secrets for growing premium strains for years.
I always say if you have to learn something try to learn from the best! :stoned:

The ONLY time I will do any trimming is under the conditions I showed above...I have done the same thing to a couple of other plants (3 of the same strain) before but the none of the leaves were yellowing. I wanted to see if there were any difference. I found growth development to slow down when trimming pefectly health green leaves during flowering. I also noticed flower development to be less dense. Now, the only trimming I do is during flower when the leaves are yellow and I only do it once or twice at most. I also do not do any trimming or prunning during veg but I do like to play around with fimming and topping.

Thanks a lot for the comment:thumbsup: I have never noticed any time delay when removing leaves this yellow and this late in to flower. If there has been any delay, it's been un-noticable. I agree with more energy being put in to the flowers, it's got to go somewhere. Thanks again :smokin:

+1!!
Cutting a green leaf hurts the plant as green leaves are still generating food and energy for the plant.
I leave all the fans on until they get really yellow, and for the most part they fall off if I give them the slightest downward pressure near the stalk.
Once the plant has started to yellow a leaf it's not costing energy, just circulation. There's lots of nutes tied up in the leaf, so the plant is pulling the nutes out of the leaf before discarding it. I read a post just after I joined discussing pruning all the big fans when you start flushing for this exact reason.

I will never cut green leaves again. I learned this the hard way with an outdoor crop that I tried to keep thin looking by prunning a lot. Needless to say, that was not smart at all and I will never do it again.
The way I see it. Prunning green leaves is like pulling a hangnail that bleeds and hurts for next few days. Prunning the yellow dieing leaves is like "cutting" a hangnail instead of pulling it, less damage this way IMO. I always cut atleast 1/2in up the stem of the leaf I am cutting too. I have noticed that the healing process is much faster when a leaf is cut instead of pulled down and snapped off the main stalk it grows from. Some works better for others though:thumbsup:.....I honestly try not to trim at all but if the leaves are dead, then they're dead and need to go. No need to have the plant working on repairing something that cannot be repaired.
I have never tried to remove all the fan leaves during the flush but it does sound like a good idea and makes sense. The plant is dieing anyways....Why not force the rest of the goodies that are still in the plant directly to the flowers? I think I may try that out:thumbsup:

To be honest, the pictures really do no justice for how beautiful these ladies really are. Plant A Skunk is very purple and just getting more clorful everyday. Trichome development is great. I have started to flush the Skunk/Haze with Blueberry Final Flush since I'm noticing cloudy trichs. I am looking to harvest this plant when the trichomes are all-mostly cloudy for the cerebral high. Looking to get couch lock out of the Skunk.

Not sure how I forgot to mention this but I broke down the total usage of power and what it cost to run my CFL grow. I won't get all technical and share my OCD with you:D, so here it is simple.
Vegging 18/6 runs $23 a month
Flowering 12/12 runs $18 a month
Not bad if you ask me:thumbsup:

Plant A Skunk is just now showing signs of fading leaves and very few cloudy trichomes...I'd say another 1.5-3weeks I should be starting the flush on her:D
Plant B Skunk/Haze has been flushing for 7 days now and still showing much improvements in production. Nearly all the non-flowering leaves are yellow and ready to go but bud growth is still pretty intense. I'll be flushing until trichomes are cloudy like I want them. Still>>>40%clear & 60%cloudy & no amber...plus purple trichchome stalks:thumbsup: Almost there:smokin:

Damn Jon, that is looking mighty tasty. I can't wait until it is cured and you report on the experience of your first smoke from it. Keep up the excellent work. Great CFL grow! :D
Thanks a lot, really appreciate it:thumbsup: Now that I have this experience under my belt, I look forward to these being done and gone to get started on the next batch. I spent atleast 2hrs a day tending to my ladies on average and I think it payed off.
I will deffinately be reporting everything that happens after the harvest as well:thumbsup:

Well, I went and check ed on the ladies like I do every day and all is well, actually better than well...The Skunk/Haze has been moved in to the dark room for the remainder of its life. It will remain there 2 days, bechopped up, and then be re-vegged:thumbsup: This came sooner than expected but I noticed a couple amber trichomes and that tells me it's time for her. Trichomes should be right about 5%-amber/75%-cloudy/20%-clear by time she's ready for me:jointsmile:
Here are some pictures and they will continue for a few posts:thumbsup:
Pictures truly do no justice so I jumped in the picture to show how big it really is...and yes, it's one plant:thumbsup:

Just wanted to add a few things...The pictures from Day 48 are intended for Thursday...
Also wanted to point out that the plant in harvest now is still tied up in the pictures from early veg. I untied her and she expands over 6.5ft wide. She is barely 6ft tall. AMAZING if you ask me:D
And to think the only reason I did this grow in the first place was to prove a friend wrong about CFL growing all the way through...Proved him wrong and I'm sure a few other people too:thumbsup:
Not sure what I'm looking at weight wise but I can care less. I am so ready to smoke some purple trichomes and beautiful, juicy, fet, dense, buds.
Amazing that this is the same plant:thumbsup:

:thumbsup:Very nice grow using CFLs, Miracle Gro Soil and Bloom Booster , and Beastie Bloomz - You did this to test a theory and I would be happy if my plants grew 1/4 to 1/3 of what you have with an experiment. So you used MG Bloom Booster from veg start to flower finish? People like you have that magic touch when it comes to growing. I have everything to get started except for the Beastie Bloomz and the magic touch. You have given me hope. Thanks for sharing

Thank you, very much appreciated:thumbsup: I did not start any nutes until I hit flowering. I did try to add nutes earlier on in veg but it was just too much for the plant. I found that a proper PH watering every time will get you all the way through veg until 7-8weeks without adding any nutes. When flowering time cam, I started with 1/4 dose nutes.

:People like you have that magic touch when it comes to growing.:
When it comes to the magic touch, I wouldnt call it magic. I lost three weeks of growth due to trial-n-error but that is how I developed the magic touch. The "magic touch" will be put to the test on the next grow for sure. Im looking to master this particular setup and hopefully full-proof it so I can pass the setup on to others. Right now I am just logging my grow to show that CFL's do have what it takes. I plan to do a couple more grows with this setup before I say it's full-proof and encourage others to try it.
If you need any help or advice, just ask:thumbsup:

The Skunk/Haze has been mostly harvested. After 10 striaght hours of cleaning up the buds and making them pretty, I am ready for a break. There is about 1/4 of the buds left on the plant but they are mostly big popcorn buds. I'm going to finish up after I get a little sleep. I thought the hanger and the two shelves would have been plenty...I was way off and still have more to go:thumbsup:
I'm still going to try and re-veg this baby but have my doubts!?!?!? Taking suggestions:thumbsup:
Here's what I've got so far and if you ask me I think it's amazing for CFL's:thumbsup:

The other plant is still coming along great and smells oh so so so so extremely potent. Her flowers are not as big but they look a lot more frosty. Still has mostly all clear trichomes, so it looks like it may be a while still. Oh well, it's not like I have the room for more right now anyways:D not that I am complaining:smokin:

Harvest went really well but took a long time, nearly 16hrs spent manicuring one plant.:stoned: I would say nearly 90% of the flowers ended up developing enough to produce a nice smokable bud. I am quite pleased with the harvest of this plant but there are a few things I will be doing differently if it makes it through re-veg.
On to the tumbler in a few days with the trimmings:thumbsup:

About 1/3 of the buds have dried enough to start curing. The dry weight so far is 42g and that's just mainly the smaller buds. One of the main colas (not the biggest) weighed in at 38g when cut down and now weighs 14g. That's still a very nice cola IMO:thumbsup:

Tell her thanks a lot, I really appreciate it:thumbsup: I spent a lot of time on this grow but I did some things differently then I originally planned and the tall lady I just chopped could have been even better IMO. I know this may sound crazy but here is my plan for next time (Have yet to see this done anywhere): I am going to use the cheapest, thinnest plastic bottles I can find and cut them to size to allow the CFL's to fall inside them. Of course I will need some fairly big bottles but I am positive that 2liters are big enough for my larger lites. The whole reason for doing this is so I can get light to the inner portions of the plants without burning them. The home-made plastic cover will allow me to be able to put lights anywhere, instead of just on top and around the outside:thumbsup:
Shooting for seven foot plants next time and much tighter spaces between the nodes if possible depending on strain:thumbsup:

Make sure you log that!
I'd say SCROG and just space all the lights evenly over the canopy,... but that takes a LOT of square footage.
So this idea might work better with less square footage in a vertical arrangement :detective1:
NICE GROW this time around! :pimp:

(I thought a lot about doing SCROG and I probably will try it when I grow the same strains at once. I didn't want to run in to problems with using different strains because of rate of growth.)

(I am excited to try out this idea. I have been thinking and planning exactly how I'm going to set this up and I'm pretty sure I've got it all figured out. As soon as the other girl is out of the way, I will start working on my ideas.)

I am proud to announce that the harvest of the Skunk/Haze is complete and came to an amazing 155g-dry weight (5.5oz):thumbsup:
The smoke is amazing and very powerful. Very strong sweet taste. Not harsh at all and burns amazingly. The taste is pure all the way through an entire joint and let me tell you, this shit is SO damn good out of new glass piece.:smokin: The buzz is very intense and is 95% cerebral, which is exactly what I wanted. Almost psychodelic and mind-tricks.

According to the smoke of it, it is perfect. I dont wait for the buds to get crispy all the way through, just by the touch, then I jar and watch closely of course. The first week is a lot of burping but I like to slow dry so the potency stays as high as possible. I have never had a mold problem with drying and curing but thanks for the opinion. Looks can be decieving in pictures but trust me, they are dry and perfectly smokable without problems.

Thanks a lot, appreciate it:thumbsup: The buds are plenty dry and I know the pictures look decieving but they are dry. I found that waiting for the buds to get crispy all the way through calls for less potency IMO. I prefer slow drying and jarring ASAP. I dont mind burping and taking my time on the curing, I find that it really pays off in the long run. Thanks for your opinion though:thumbsup:

I also swap jars daily, that way the buds get a very even dry and cure. I always found the most crucial part about the whole process of growing to be the drying and curing stages. I can still remember my very first dry & cure...still laughing from that one:D The way I do things now makes a 90% difference in smoking quality for me. I dont feel I have it at 100% yet but soon enough I will, hopefully:thumbsup:

Great job! I saw your pics in the best nugs thread and had to see your grow log. I am amazed at the quality and size of those plants considering your using cfls. I am about a week and a half behind you and very excited, have never started a log though. Maybe next time. How many watts in total in the end of bloom? and what color temperatures? Thanks.

Thanks a lot, really appreciate it:thumbsup: My total watts in flowering was 670 watts. I mixed the spectrums for flowering because it seems to offer a lot more resin production (my other plant is nicer than this last one but not as big). I used about 80%-85% 2700k(RED-spectrum) and the rest was 6500K(BLUE-spectrum). If you happen to start a log with what you have left to finish let me know. I'd like to see what you got going.
Don't let anyone ever tell you CFL's cant produce anything worth smoking. The plant I just harvested only took 101-days total to finish and that was with stunted growth in the early stage of life.

I'm probably not going to start a log for this round since I'm so far in. I'm am going to start flushing in a few days, but I am starting to get into the habit of photo journaling so that is the first step to being able to maintain a viable one. I hate it when people disappear in the middle of their grow log:mad: I think cfls are great for being able to keep the light close to the plant without heat issues. I like how you integrated the spiral bulbs throughout. I do a similar technique for the lower half of my setup, but not much as I trim nearly every node (but I leave the leaves) up to the top few on each branch with a viable height. In these pics you might notice how I tie the blades of the large fan leaves together rather than clipping them when they turn yellow so as not to cause stress and allow the plant to continue to feed off of them without blocking the light to the lower branches. Contrary to popular belief, I actually veg under a 10k power compact typically used for marine aquarium applications. The plants love it and it keeps the internodes tighter. You have to select the bulb by comparing the spectral output graph of the bulb to a photosynthetic active radiation chart (P.A.R.) to get one that is appropriate for terrestrial plants such as cannabis. I am just starting to build my grow room now that I have refined my style. I just started growing maybe seven or eight months ago and am starting to come into my own. So I have a really good idea how I want things set up. I'm thinking of a vert grow, hps placed in the center and a circular scrog surrounding the lamp to maintain optimal distance without loosing any usable lumens through them having to bounce off the reflector loosing intensity and increasing distance from canopy on all light not in direct orientation from the lamp. Anyways, now I'm just rambling. For some reason its not letting me attach any photos. I'll post them over in the best nugs page so you can check them out. Cheers

So, Jon, for the next grow you're going to put the CFL's in bottles? what do you mean by that? you mean you'll put them in plastic bottles so they don't bur the plants? Like, cut the bottom off, string the plug through the cap, and have the bulb inside the plastic sheath, and then put that right against the plant?
