The male,is for propagating the plant through pollen,and the female produces seeds when fertilized,what you want..is a 'virgin' female..it will possess the greatest potency. Most folks,pull the male plants,so that the female doesn't waste any energy on producing seeds,which also lowers the female's potency.

what if i just want marijuana from my plant, not seeds, is a male plant good for me in that case?

you do not want a male plant,you can tell because a male will start growing what look like little grape clusters(you will see them)

Its just a stick with balls and a few leaves- male plant
You want a female plant,that buds.

the male plants are alot scrawnier then the female plants. the female will start growing little white hairs called pistils. the male will grow little balls called the pollon sacks.once the sacks burst it pollinates the female..which sux. when no pollon reaches the female she makes more and more pistils becoming budd!
