View Full Version : Enhancing flavor with other herbs

Recently decided to experiment with grow, so started my first grow 3 days ago. I have one Skywalker OG clone (about 5 in tall) planted in 1 gallon pot and 3 Skywalker (Mazur x Blueberry) seeds successfully germinated in a wet towel, now in soil waiting to sprout. Since I'm completely new to this, I've been reading alot, trying to grasp some of the wealth of information required to grow good cannabis. Anyways, i've read not to use fertilizer or nutrients 7-10 days before harvest, as the buds would "taste" like plant food. So my question is this: Could you add fresh herbs (mint, sage, thyme etc.) or spices (cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg etc) to the water (shaken up in the water, and then using water for the cannabis) the last week? Could this add a subtle flavor to the buds, in the same concept that plant food affects the buds, or would it be a complete waste of time? Also, if I try this just for experimentation, could there be a negative reaction or something that is harmful to the plants? It may be a stupid question, but I'm new to this, just smoked a bowl, and I'm trying to think of creative ways to enhance my flowers. Thanks.

There are products you can buy that claim to add some flavor, grape or citrus or berry. They kinda work, they change the flavor but I'm not sure if its for the best. A few weeks ago a read a post where the poster had added vanilla extract to his res 24 hours before harvest. He said within 2 hours he could smell the vanilla in the buds. He had been flushing for a week or so, and he was in hydro. I think your in soil, but the principle is similar. 1-2 days before harvest you could mix some vanilla with water and water your plants. I like when my weed smells like weed, and nothing else.

Its pretty safe to add sage water during the last 2 days. If something bad happens you just harvest and hope the flavor is good if there is any at all. When I say bad, i mean drooping, wilting, color change, instantaneous combustion.
I once wanted to add food coloring to my res to make some crazy colored nugs, but I got stoned and forgot.

Hahaha, he went pouring vanilla into his hydro system and he "smelled vanilla in the buds", more like smelled vanilla in the room lol. Anyhoo, adding spices will not produce results, cannabis or plants in general don't work that way, the roots only take in simple molecules that are broken down enough to be absorbed (ie water, nutrients). Not so say that adding sage to the water will harm the plant, but it simply won't enhance flavor. Everything it takes in it breaks down and converts anyway. Also, I'd have to agree that grass has a pretty enough smell all its own. Peace

Now if residuals from fertilizers may effect the flavor of the buds why wouldn't other organic nutrients such as molasses, honey, corn syrup etc. have a similar effect? I mean it probably wouldn't hurt anything to mix some honey and molasses into your final few waterings?

The fertilizers are nutrients, able to be absorbed, and the taste is just an overabundance of them. I've heard of a lot of people using molasses, not for flavor though, and I never really bought into the supposed benefits of using molasses, but I could see it maybe producing some boost if the plant is able to take in the sugars and use them, but I really just don't see that happening as the plant makes all of its sugar in a specific, usable form. Something I'm more interested in would be the birth control pill. Also, I've been wanting to make feminized seeds. I figure that as aspirin forces plants male, that if you took a female plant and fed it asprin you would force it to put off male flowers and, with only X chromosomes, produce only female seeds. Think I might try that.

Chrystal light fruit juice something to do with the potassium in the crystals water your plants with it 1-2 times before harvest I guess makes them taste like the flavor of juice..
