Has anyone used a pen like this and if so did it work well? And would you think the moisture meter would be only as accurate as iv water up till now? I really have no issues watering, but the price isn't bad so why not get two tools for a good price.

Thanks:rasta:

I thinks it works the same way as what I use now and have used for years growing veggies.

I dont really trust em that much and I'm currently looking at an electric or battery powered unit thats a lot more accurate than these.

What I have now:

uh... yeahhh baaaby, YEAHHHH! Marriage is a bitch, eh? I rely on Sam Kinison for advice on such matters. The ABCs and all that...

BTW I did my first run. I was a bit disappointed with the results. I know I can do better next time but I see the need for some supplemental HPS. I'm adding either a 250w or 400w unit to the mix. But heat is a bastard in my situation.

Hope you are well.

The one your using looks nice, i like how skinny the probes are. The one im looking at seems pretty fat to maybe mess up roots if i needed an adjustment and needing multiple readings.

After some reading last night, the ''Ed Rosenthal's Marijuana Grower's Handbook'' talked about the test tube kit being more accurate. But im sure a Ph pen is much more time consuming. But im sure after a few times it should get easier. But getting a wrong Ph could mess up the plant more. But i really need to pull the trigger on one, my plant is still sick, but is not slowing growth. So i need to find out what it is, i put a ''no pest strip'' in this morning to kill mites, i just hope it works like it did for everyone else i read about who used it.

The books great btw.

I just bought a Milwaukee Instruments pH Pen, PH600 on Amazon for a total of $25. I'll test the two side by side when they come in and let ya know what happens...

Stra8 i didn't even let the page load before clicking on the pen i listed so thanks, i would have never seen that one. I wonder if i could use it to measure my nutes and RO with this pen. And if a person grows in the dirt, why dont i ever see anyone use em? Im going to look into it more, but really need to get a reading as im guessing at this point. I gave folier Epsom today, but just a fine misting.

Thanks bro:rasta:

Ok, the el-cheapo faced off against the brand new Milwaukee pH600.

El-cheapo tester from HD - Read bottled water at a 8+ (no clear markings for .1's so its hard to tell if it was an 8.1 or 8.5, plus the meter only reads from 3.5-8 so IDK fo sho...

Milwaukee pH600 - Read the same bottles water at 7.1. I tested it 6 times stretched over bout 20 min just for giggles and it read 7.1 5 times and 7.2 once. I trust this a lot more than the 3-way cheapo meter.

EDIT: The Wife just handed me a cup of coffee, I stuck both in it right quick, el-cheapo read 8- just a bit but the pH600 read 5.4 :wtf:

go figure.......
i think the el-cheapo is screwy...

RIGHT!!!

I watered/feed today. Went through the process the same was I was with the pH/light/Moisture tester (el-cheapo).

Used bout half the pH down I usually did to get the nute water down to 6.

Also, my run off read 5.8, not 7+ like usual.

I think I've been forcing my pH down too low due to unreliable readings from the el-cheapo

:(

My pen got all whacked out of calibration, so I wound up forcing my PH WAY down, :(

Make sure you get buffers and calibrate often! ;)

Your not the only one here who has had probs with the brand of pH tester...

IDK if its brand-wide or just a model or two though...

The shop I bought it from said 1 of 10 come back, the higher priced hanna meters are known to be very good.

Thanks man, the one i had was a Hanna pen i think, but not high priced one. Im looking to pay around $100.00 or so, but thats gotta be as high as im going. Il bet the dropper old school test kit would give best reading, but just a guess. Maybe il get one and see what the difference would be if any:thumbsup:

You should be able to pick up a pretty nice unit for that c-note you're willing to spend. I got a cheaper model from a good manu but wasn't willing to spend that much.

I've read a bit bout the dropper kits, lots like em and lots don't some say it's pretty hard to read the color properly when testing run-off, that's the main con I've read.

Cool, If you're willing to run two diff types of pH equip against one another I'd be great info to know, give us a heads up if you do

Well i paid $90.00 for an Oakton and got some Ph up and down. But he cut the total price to $90.00. The up and down was $10.00 so he gave me the pen for only $70.00 and its water proof.

Here is the problem, i can not find and answer to. Hey this sounds really dumb to me, but i just dont understand. Ok, so the pen did not come with a buffer and said it was already calibrated, but to what? Does not say:wtf:. And i guess i cant grasp the fact that you adjust the Ph to a 4.0 or 7.0, shouldn't it be at zero? This i dont get:wtf:.

In the instructions the number one thing it tells me to do is this?

-Select Ph 7.0 buffer for genral testing, Ph 4.0 for acidic and Ph 10.00 for alkaline samples. -I have 4.0 that iv misplaced around here some place. I have been trying my best to get everything i will need and im almost there. But i just can not understand the Ph thing. I know id need to keep a Ph close to 6.8 as this will give max uptake of all available nutes i give as well as micros in the soil. right?

But if i cant understand how to and why the Ph on the pen isn't to be at zero, well then iv bought all this stuff for nothing as il end up with a messed up Ph all the time. I posted some readings in the ''plant problem'' section and my NL plant reads 7.5. Now the plant was watered and run off was 7.6 so we checked the nutes, which were 6.5. So i thought this would bring down the Ph of the plant more then .1, im not getting it. My tap water is 7.2.

Any help would be great, im clueless and losing my freaking mind:(

Well no response yet so i was thinking that what i ask help for did not make a bit of sense to anyone. If this is true let me know and il try an clear it up.

Bottom line, i do not know how to use my Ph pen or understand why it needs calibrated to a number other then 0.0?

Any help would be great:thumbsup:as my searches here are not coming up with an answer.

Thanks for reading tho:rasta:

Seems you should be able to call Oakton for tech support, no? Here is the number: 1-888-4OAKTON (1-888-462-5866). I'm not sure if they provide this kind of support but it's worth a try.

Hey thanks man, to bad my phone will not even dial. Its going whack on me with it shutting off and the verizon on the front turns upside down:wtf:and its water proof and shock resistant. And the ex is cutting me off the 15th anyway so il be getting a trac phone. If i cant find or get the info, i will call em, like you said its worth a try.
