View Full Version : Great and easy way to germinate seeds!

I've sort of discovered a far easier way to germinate seeds as opposed to the "paper towel" method. In my opinion, the paper towel germination is ultimately a pain in ass. All you need is...

1-2 Sponges (depending on how many seeds)
Chip Clip (the clips you put on chips to keep them fresh)

First, you get the sponge nice and moist, but NOT to the point where it's soaking wet. Then get your seeds and put them in the middle of the sponge (I generally put a maximum of five). Next you fold the sponge in half and put the chip clip on so it stays folded.

You can store the sponge filled seeds virtually anywhere, since the seeds are already in a dark area (inside the sponge). Hopefully as you can see, this self-proclaimed method is far easier then the crappy paper towel method. Also, the sponge provides 24/7 moisture to the seed, and you hardly need to check on them. Just once a day ;). Good luck! :) If you have any questions, just reply to this thread

Even though I haven't yet tried your sponge germination technique, it sounds like a good idea.

I have been using the paper towel method for years and never really considered it a pain in the ass at all. ..not as bad as pulling string out of a cats ass anyway.

Woah!! Hey!!! That shit aint' funny! (pardon the punn)

1st, you should NEVER, EVER allow a cat or any pet to get ahold of string, wire, Christmas tinsel strands, dental floss, rubber bands, or any kind of long stringy material. It can knott up inside their intestines and they could die a slow painful death and/or require a very costly emergency surgery. This is no joke sir.

2nd, If your pet does end up with a string coming out from their butt you should NEVER, EVER just pull it out. If it's long clip it off and monitor very closely for any abnormal symptoms. A check up would be very important and possibly an X-ray.

Clinical signs may include any of the following:
â?¢vomiting or dry heaves
â?¢anorexia or decreased appetite
â?¢straining to defecate or diarrhea
â?¢painful abdomen
â?¢fever
â?¢depression
â?¢dehydration (due to vomiting)

I'm sure no offense was intended so you get a pass this time RainHaze. ;)

Take it easy man, I'm sure what your saying is right, but RainHaze is just kidding. As much as I care for animals, they are not very relevant to my original thread. What do you think in regards to germinating cannabis? ;)

First of all ive had a cat with the string issue... not fun at all.

As for the sponge... I dont see it being any different than the paper towel. In fact I would be careful using a sponge as the root can pierce it and try to root in the actual spongey material. It is very similar to a rapid rooter material wise. If that happened it could kill your seed trying to pull it out.

Besides, the paper towel method isnt that much of a pain is it?

Just use rapid rooters instead of either way and you will be much happier!

I find the best way to germinate is to place seeds in about a cup of RO water. Run an air line in from a fish tank pump. Let bubble for about two or three days and your ready to go.

I saw the sponge method in Jorge Cervantes or something, but I think the cup in ro is a good one too, just need more attention, if you leave them their for more than 24 hours they can die.

I've been soaking mine in a small vessel of water for about 24 hrs under a coffee cup, or until I see signs of the seed opening. Then I've either put them in a folded, dampened paper towel between two saucers for a couple more days, or just plant them, and let 'em rip. 90% success rate with all methods. And this is from seeds I've gotten from known strains when I bought it and like cracker jacks, find a prize in every oz. No need at this point to buy from foreign dealers. I guess I've just been lucky!!

I've not tried the sponge method but I've heard of it. I use a warm damp wash cloth and place it in a plastic bag then wrap it in a towel and place it on my cable box. It generally takes 24-36 hrs to germinate. I've broke a small piece of the tail off a few times and they grow just the same as the 1s not broke. I've also used napkins the same way as the wash cloth and have had no problems. I use the thick dinner napkins because the cheap thin 1s tear apart when trying to get to my hatchling. I get a 99% germination rate. Every now and then I get a seed that takes 3-4 dayz to germinate.

I saw the sponge method in Jorge Cervantes or something,

I didn't get the idea from "whover that is", but maybe more people have used the sponge method. Sorry if someone else has thought of this, I didn't realize it.
