167 Police to be let go in NJ's largest city. Not that I am a fan of police, but safety of neighborhoods is a different story..
(11/03/10) NEWARK - Barring a court order, 167 Newark police officers will be let go one week from Friday as they have started to receive their pink slips in the mail. Lamar Melvin, who received a pink slip, was a part of the Newark Police Department's graduating class in Jan. 2008. He says when he graduated people told him how great the job was and there were great opportunities.
The Newark Fraternal Order of Police sued the city, claiming the city never held a formal meeting with the union before going ahead with the layoffs.
and as far as the projected date of the layoffs..
some gang members in Newark are wearing T-shirts with that date printed on them in anticipation.

Well, it all may not be lost for the LEOs. They are probably going to need some troops to go after the growers who defeated Prop 19 because they chose money over freedom. :D

Exactly my point. Send them to Mendocino and Humboldt counties, and leave the rest of the coast who voted yes alone! You know, change the dynamics. :S2:

i do believe in the safety of our neighborhoods as well. but more police, or keeping police around is NOT the answer. more police is how you get a police state (at least the start of). it is the citizens jobs as well as the police to maintain order in the nation. not to mention all these states/cities are going bankrupt and whatnot. more spending is not the key. if you fear for your safety, get a gun.

I HATE Newark Police more than most others, but in a city with so many murders... 167 Officers being taken off the streets and thereby drastically reducing the number of patrols and first responders scares the crap out of me, and really makes me fear for the community.
ohh and I really don't think lots of police make a police state.. Large numbers of Police may be a phenomenon within a Police state, but really isn't a contributing factor to the definition of a Police State..:twocents:
(the way Nwk cops will treat you and conduct themselves sure as hell makes you feel you're in a police state though haha)

lots of police don't necessarily make a police state, but they are far more than a phenomena within.
"The term police state describes a state in which the government exercises rigid and repressive controls over the social, economic and political life of the population. A police state typically exhibits elements of totalitarianism and social control, and there is usually little or no distinction between the law and the exercise of political power by the executive.
the police, weather it be local, state or federal are the enforcers to make sure all is well within said police state. the real fact of the matter is that your ELECTED civic leaders can't do their job correctly, balance a budget and not rob their citizens of both money and freedom.
a police officer, known orginally as a peace officer for a reason. the term police officer infers something totally different.
not arguing either. just putting my $.02 in. lol.
the fact of the matter is that we need less govt. and their cronies, not more. but every law is written for our protection of benefit, or so they would like us to believe, but it's really a ploy to take said money and freedoms. just like our fore-fathers predicted would happen and were totally against.

Just thought I would throw a little update, been about a month since the layoffs went into effect..
Irony=""Weâ??re not going to spare a penny in beating back this effort," Booker said. "We will not let this continue in our city."
about 11 pages of articles resulting from a search of "Newark shooting" in the past 4 weeks.

Its a zoo in the Bricks. I dont like the boys niether but I understand why there assholes. You try strolling around the Bricks and see them young boys test you, you gonna see real quick why they got those attitudes, once again I sure as hell dont like the boys, and the hatred doubles when you talking about the task force, but its places like Kearny, Harrison, Bloomfield, where the police make me sick. They act just as stupid as Newark cops but since they dont face any actual crime finding a dime bag lands your name in the paper.
At least with Newark cops assholes or not at any given moment they can have their lives ended by just one person who doesnt give a fuck about that gunshot detection or that muthafuckin camera hangin from the traffic light
