View Full Version : How much should I grow?

I'm gearing up for my first grow and asking myself how much I should grow. I know, it sounds like a silly question, but those are such common keywords that the search function didn't yield any useful hits (pun intended... :)).

Let's presume that lack of room inside or outside is not an issue. Nor is time, money to get started, learning curve, security, nor any of the usual impediments one can expect to encounter in the real world.

As a baseline, how much cured bud does it take to medicate myself (late-50's 190 lb male) once a day year 'round? And working backwards from there, how many plants does it take to produce that typically?

Indoor with 3 crops per year.

Outdoor with 1 crop a year.

Thanks!

no one can tell you how much it will take to get you high. there is a lot of factors that go into that.

not to mention, the bud you grow might not be anything like what others grow. perhaps you should go get a sample from a dispensary and work backwards from there yourself.

Your points are well taken, shake, but I am just trying to get a general idea of what others' experience has been, since I haven't yet started my grow and am thinking of roughly how big I need to plan for. I don't know the answers to some of the simplest questions...like, how long does a gram or an ounce last for persons who medicate once a day?

I understand that others' replies might not apply directly to my situation, but I can use their answers to gauge the rough size of my initial operation.

Hoping to see folks sharing their experiences here... :)

Like shake had mentioned, there are a million and 1 variables. If you plan to medicate 1 time a day, you would be better off acquiring your medicine from a distributor.

You could get everything right, except for the cure and ruin a whole season of grow. The only real way to know how much and how well things grow for you, is to, like nike says, "Just do it."

I think you should just weigh the amount of bud you smoke a day. Say 1 g and you want to harvest twice a year so your not constantly growing. 365gs a year - 168 gs every six months. 168 / 28 = 6oz. Considering you have never grown before that may seem like a big figure but if you put the time in and read a lot of threads and maybe a book or two that could be easily achiveable. AND if you can use all the best kit such as high pressure sodium lights and good quality ferts that figure wouldnt be hard to reach at all. Id say 12 plants would grow you minimum 6ozs. Anything more, share with friends, keep it in a jar, feed it to the birds ! Obviously all these figures are irrelevant to you but you get the ideas ? Im ranting a bit now but hope this helps somewhat ! Charbud§

I would grow as many plants as my resources would allow and still be legal.

The answer is so simple....ALL you can! Hang it to dry, take it down and pass it around and send it to me @ this address....LOL!

Say you smoke a gram a day or about 365 grams, 1 plant outdoors 4 or 5 indoors should be all you need if you do it right.

If done correctly, a plant can easily yield one pound of medical marijuana.

Your yield will depend on your growing facility investment, knowledge base, and help structure. There are lots of dispensaries or affiliates that offer cannabis cultivation classes. Even a simple comm. college plant science class can be a big help.

Also, smoking the same medical marijuana day in and day out will eventually cause "strain burn" or a tolerance. Try to find more than one strain for your particular condition.

Good Luck to you

I had to giggle when I read this. I guess you need to leave room for a bed and a computer desk. Other than that, fill the place up!
Seriously, when I find myself on hard times.... like right now, when there are no meds to be had, I can stretch a 1/4 oz out for a long long time. When it becomes abundant, I seem to be capable of using quite a bit more. It all depends on the situation for me... but I have trouble imagining where I would draw the line that said I had too much. :D

I too am a first time grower. But what I can tell you is when you smoke the same bud for an extended period of time, you will get a tolerance for it.
Not to mention how bloody tired of it you would be... think about it.
What I am doing is still buying quality meds from a despencory, because I can't give you my word this bud is going to be dank! Expect trial and error! Gone through a few clones already because not every place sells quality clones. So keep your eyes peeled.
