SCROG shot #2

Still new(ish) to this whole growing thing, and my first grow kicked my ass. :o

I've learned alot, and had high hopes for my V-1 SCROG, but it ended in utter failure when the plant went hermie and popped out a pollen sack during week 2. :mad: :cursing::sadcrying


It's been a few months now, and I've got a new girl to give this whole SCROG thing a shot with, so here we go!!!!:pimp::hippy:

You'll love scrog. A little more effort during veg while filling the screen, but pretty much on auto pilot after you enter 12/12 and get your screen filled. Little more work, great rewards! Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Yep, the point is to maximize the yield from a single plant. The Screen is about 2'x2' which is pretty good sized for a single plant IMO (Camoxnhx, its just chicken screen from the hardware store ;) ). I'm limited by the size of my flowering cabinet, and this single plant is taking up over a third of it! :D

I'm runnin a perpetual grow and am only throwing up the log of flowering this plant. The first pic is from Day 1 of flowering, quite literally taken minuets after moving the plant from the vege room to the flowering room and dropping the screen on it, so I'm filling in the screen with stretch. :hippy:



I'll clear up my grow a little in the next post ;)

This will actually be the 3rd of this strain that I've flowered, I'm not expecting the screen to completely fill up with stretch and the plant is already fighting me with training, but I'm seeing about 50 bud sights at screen level, and 7 that look like they'll make solid cola's!:rastasmoke:

Watering promises to be a bitch,... I'm going to have to get a piece of tube to attach to the end of my watering can so I can move it around under the screen that's only about 5" off the top of the soil! :eek:

NP man! ;)


SCR.O.G means SCReen Of Green. It's a style of growing that "Trains" the plant to make it branch more. (Do some searching for SCROG and LST and you'll get a better understanding of training. ;) )

Then when the flowering cycle is kicked off it keeps the canopy at the same level to the light thusly allowing all the buds to mature at the same rate since they all get the same light, instead of like a natural grow (like your doing ;) ) where the top gets all the light and shades the lower buds.

Kitsune posted a perfect example just above! :tu: That's 2 plants growing there, and those two plants completely fill the grow area with a solid sheet of buds! :cool: :rastasmoke:


I'm still kinda a noob myself,... and this is as the title implies, only my 2nd shot at this style of growing.

My Scrog has only been veged for 2 months, Got the cutting on 7-3-10 And it was JUST A CUTTING!!! I had to get it to root, then revege it since it was in early flowering.

I'm using the Techniflora "Recipe for Success" Nute's,.... Don't really have to add much in Vege since I'm using Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil,... I up pot just before flowering or early into it. Still getting my groove on now that things are running smoothly.:hippy:

Not much to see,... I made it rather hard on myself. The screen is only about 6" above the soil. Watering is a bitch, but I've got a 3 foot long tube on the end of my watering can.

Personally I kinda like em.

One of the biggest bitches I've heard about them is that they dry out to fast. And that's 100% true! They dry out REAL quick, which means IMO I've got better control over the nutes going in, and can get a better flush in the end.

I'm still veging in plastic tho as I'm not sure about up potting stress with the fabric bags, so I"m up potting as I go to flower into the smart pots.

i've heard great things about smart pots. i plan on using some in the near future (moving and not sure where i'm gonna setup shop yet). not only does it allow better nute control but your roots get way more o2/co2! this is one reason aeroponics is so successful, because the whole plant gets o2/co2.

Not just yet,.... but you did steer me in the right direction I think. I'm thinking there's a PH problem, and it's being amplified under the LED. Not that out of wack, just enough to screw things up.

Things are improving slightly, but I figure it took a while to get here, it's gonna take a while to get better.

I'm giving a go at a small scale flowering under the LED none the less, Not gonna log that failure tho. ;) I'm relying on the wife to move the plant under the table at the right time to give the light cycle while I'm at work,... this can only end badly!

This would not surprise me given the overall efficiency of LED and the accelerated growth potential of LED. This is why I dropped my nute usage down to 1/3 recommended bottle strength (and you see what I'm getting so far, so i could probably bump the nutes up a bit, but dun wanna because i can't flush in this system plan!)

Yeah, I broke out the drop tester, and the pen is off..... Got buffer today and hope to get the pen re-upped tomorrow.

Most everything is still looking good, so I'm hoping this little thing isn't gonna blow up in my face! :o

When I say "Little thing" I believe for the last week or so the Pen has been giving me off readings leading me to lower PH below my target of 6.0. I have no clue how low they got, or how low my run off is since my pen hasn't been recalibrated yet. I've only barely seen any signs of a problem with the plants, and that might be my imagination ATM.

The clue to something being off was the water was taking almost 2x the PH DOWN to adjust as it was a month ago,... LOTS of red flags went up! :wtf:


I went back an pulled all the paperwork on the pen,.... wow,... I should have read this when I bought it! :o

3 more weeks to go on advice from a friend/dispensary owner (and my slight disappointment with my last harvest of this strain)

Not sure when I should start flushing, I think she's gonna get one more feeding, then push into flush mode, my last run I flushed the last 2 weeks, it could have been better IMO, but then this plant is already showing some N loss where the last run of this strain was still really green when I harvested at 9 weeks. Trich's were looking good and all, but the effect is really heady and only lasts about an hour and a half. :(

Hey Canni not sure of your plans after harvest, but thought i might suggest just trimming off buds to leave enough foliage to re veg it. All ya need is some leaves or like a few small buds left on the outer part of the stem. Then ya simply pull it out of the bag and cut about a good inch of roots on all four sides and the bottom. Then you have a smaller square root ball you put back into the same bag, with fresh soil on the bottom and sides. Put it into 18/6 and start veg nutes and in 2 months you can flower it, which would be double the yield from this go-round. When the buds start throwing branches, they really grow fast.

Just a thought. Its just that you already grew the plant, why miss out on a faster, larger yield. Like i said man, just a thought, as my experience turned out, i will re veg every plant i can. And its so easy, i always wonder why people dont use the method more.

Well you could sit it in your veg area and just trim on it till its perfect for a Scrog like this one, but with a bigger screen, lol. Plus you could use it for clones if ya want. Im not sure what you have to stay under as far as plant count and all, but it would be a plant considered in veg, not bud. Heck you could almost grow it like a house plant if you just make sure its got more light then dark. I guess its a good way to keep a mother, it being able to give clones and really not take up much space, or let it go and put your screen on, it would be huge. Man the stalk of that Skunk x NL is as big around as a coke can. I couldn't believe how big it was after i harvested i could see it.

Man i just bought a cloner last night. These things are like weed machines and if i get my NL healthy im going to fill that thing with clones. I have 2 kinds of Purples that i put in dirt two days ago. I had 3 popped, but the damn mites ate 2 of them up, i have the only one left sitting by my bed under a cfl, its Purple Haze. I bought the the Earth Juice line of ferts. There are a couple of bottles i still need, but not important. Additives, but i got something eles that adds beneficial bacteria and is to keep your plants healthy. Plus i got 2 150watt led bars. I need to get a scrubber and a Ph pen, pots, soil and some of those emergency blankets. So im pumped bro and cant wait till i can get all set up. I am waiting for the no pest strips to kill the mites/bugs in my room. After its in there 2 weeks im going to bomb it too. But im only going to use that space to keep my mothers and clones now i have these lights. Thats why im trying to get seeds popped, i will have 10'x10' footprint with these two lights. Plus i might be getting a 400hps to help budding.

Im thinking i told ya this, um not sure. Just excited maybe, but man i haven't had anything to do. I need to get growing:thumbsup:. Anyway bro, if you want to re veg and have any questions, just ask. I think i have it down pretty good i think. My outdoor would have been much better if i wouldnt have gotten robbed. I was forced to take it way before i wanted to.

Yeah, I know how it goes getting pumped for a new room, I can't wait to really get my new flower room rolling, it will allow me to expand my vege, and run an additional 600w HPS. I can't take this current flower down and move the 400 over until this scrog is finished, so the new room looks pretty empty with just the 600 burning and an empty space waiting for a light.

I wound up taking the LED Down for vege, it works nicely if its right down close to the girls, but by the time it was high enough to cover the whole table it was starving my babies for light, so the 400 MH is back up, and the LED is UNDER the table doing a side by side LED/HPS flowering, Same strain same height same feeding schedule, water water feed, however the girls under the LED don't use as much water due to the lower temps.

Week 2, already starting to see little bud formations on both sides. Still WAY to early to say either way.

BTW, I'm limited to 6 plants per patient and a max of 5 Patients + my wife, so 36 total.

The new flower will allow me to make them bigger tree's or Screens and MAYBE I'll actually be able to keep up with demand,... it's been pretty trying so far. :o

Well,... this is my first scrog that will actually go to completion so Thanks! :jointsmile:

As far as pulling the screen, it's on until harvest!

In hindsight my use of chicken screen made training easier but will make harvest harder, so it's a trade off.

I know a commercial grower that SCROG's and he uses industrial fence, with a 3x4 inch grid, that works great for his size grow! And at harvest, cut the plant pull it down and VIOALA! ready to trim! ;)

As for MY grow, I will have to excise the buds from the screen before I can move the pot and undergrowth,.... Harvest is kinda gonna suck. :(


Personally I feel there are several way's to SCROG, and none are really wrong, it's just a matter of how much work you want to put into it! :rastasmoke:

So My advice to a first timer looking to scrog,..... First don't do it.

SCROG takes a LOT of work to maintain,.... the results are worth it, but for a first timer it can be a bit to chew off..... Ask me how I know :o

But if you had the stones and the space like that, im sure it no more difficult then yours, only wayyyyyyy bigger. lol So a lot of work to do in that big ass space, but he's smart to use the method with the space. If ya can let use know the dry weight if ya can.

36 Plants is a lotta plants man, but id like to grow for people. Do ya advertise or is it a worda mouth kinda thing? Im thinking ya need a few 1k's with a light mover. Man those movers are cool, you can grow more with less almost. But im not sure how it would effect plants not having the constant light on them. I guess it sounds good, but if it did work, im sure your buddy would have used it, way less electric.

Check with your local laws to see if you can even be a caregiver, I've seen folks advertise, even on this site. But that's a bit shady IMO. I've accrued my patients thru word of mouth. And only one is a heavy use patient so I don't have to have a bunch of plants, well below my max 36. (in all stages of growth, max 18 in flower)

Also, HB1284 screwed me in the ass for getting rid of any excess. Used to be I could sell over grow to the dispensary's, now they can only buy from other dispensary's. :mad: and any excess meds I produce have to be destroyed! :eek: So I'm trying to work it so I'm producing just the right amount.

It's a 3 gallon, I've had some roots poke out too, mostly they air prune. The ones in the drip tray will sometimes get about 1/4" before I let em dry out too much.

SOG with 5 strains can be a bitch trying to keep the canopy even. IMO SCROG would be a better choice, Stretchy strains will need more screen, but your canopy will be perfectly even! :jointsmile:

I understand the back thing, but why not hang the light as high up as you can and set the plants on tables, (shelving) to get the canopy at a height where you don't have to bend down to work them.

My Screen is about 3' off the floor (for this log, new one under the 600 is closer to 4' up) I do most of my work kneeling,... but if I wanted to I could move everything UP so I didn't have to kneel down to work em.

My Buddy's SCROG is right at chest height, and walking thru that 40k flower is fun, its like wading thru buds. He's got a little scooter (looks like a wagon with a swiveling tractor seat on it) to run up and down the rows to maintain the undergrowth.

SCROG isn't my idea, something I read about that made sense. And YES it is FUN! :rastasmoke:

It takes a LOT of work tho, and the rewards,... well the rewards are pretty good. But it dose sacrifice those big honkin colas :( (AKA Bud's on a stick)

Instead of the huge bud up top, and some side buds on the branches with a big hollow void in the middle that has a few wispy buds, the entire plant is covered in smaller buds, pretty much every bud point has a chance to produce to the max!

Overall, I feel that a SCROG plant will out perform a naturally grown plant of the same age.

Ok canni, Im painting. Look at my log and see my box. Ok, now I take a screen and cut holes in it to set the pots in. Bring that up to the ring on the pots and mount. Then LST the thing and tie/twist insert or what ever branches to the screen. Im not sure this would even make a diff.

I like your idea of raising the pots though...Good idea.

That would work, but would also be a PITA to water. Pretty similar to what I'm thinking for next years outdoor girl.

Height was a bit of an issue last summer, so next year I plan on using a re-veged SCROG, and training it down out of the pot and straight to the sides, I've got it in my head a cascade of buds flowing out of a pot and stretching out to the sides,..... Ahhhh to be able to dream. :D

Does beg the question how much water it will disperse, and how well the center of the pot gets covered. Also, not much a fan of the main stalk being off set in the pot. the bulk of the roots will be in 1/2 of the pot.

What is it Day 70? and still no amber? The pruning looks good. the buds look a little airy though....how much longer are going?

There's some amber starting to creep in, Day 70 is Sunday, Planning on running closer to 77 days. She's getting a bit of foxtailing that tends to plump up the buds a bit in the next week.

The down fall of lots of training and SCROG is you don't get huge fat buds, instead you get LOTS of little buds. Most of them are about the size of golf balls, with a few fair size ones about 4" long and 2" in diameter. Individually they are rock solid.

Also keep in mind this plant is really pretty small, and I'm still expecting to pull about 2-3 oz dried. Not bad for a Sativa :hippy:

The pruning was to help reduce the amount of N she can pull into the buds, my last harvest of this strain tasted great, but a little grassy, so I'm hoping to get better flavor out of this one.

Wow 77 days though......hum......After all the trimming I have been doing lately.....the golf ball size nugs...are really nice.....sometimes the huge buds get too big and they get spongy and not real hard....so maybe the scrog is an excellent way....2 to 3 ounces is very good..:thumbsup:

My Scrog should start tomorrow....well if its not raining and I am able to work on the tables:)

Turn your camera on, go into the settings menu, drop your exposure value -1 or -2, no flash. Your light is overpowering the camera sensor.

major props brother! super sweet, I am building my room for my first hydro grow now,(going to be a SCROG thanks to the advice of others) and hope mine look as good when the time comes. I have some questins thou, even though i know the answer is somewhat strain dependent but...
1) when veging do you top or "FIM" your plants when you do a scrog? seems like this may be beneficial??
2)when do you trim the lower branches? about the time the plant fills the screen?
3)how do you get the plant to fill out the screen? to get the branches to grow up? is it from LST from the get go?

Just seems like with a 3.5oz grow and you know what to tweak, i would think your yields would only go up. Id luv to try one, but with all the tyeing and all, im not sure i could get it done with my dexterity in my fingers. But who knows, i might get brave one day, its just that after watching this grow, i know it would be worth it:thumbsup:. But for now il watch you be killer Scrog guy:D

So I'm going to be doing a mix of Scrog, and natural grown girls.

My intention is a perpetual harvest, so I have to get my head around multiple strains, and figure out the ideal size for flowering each given strain to keep enough of it on hand to take care of my patients needs.

Couple foot notes from this grow,.... When SCROGing. Let the plant grow UP some so you have room to work under the screen and water. :o

I had to cut the whole screen out of the room, then cut the screen open so the buds could slide thru with out ripping them up and nocking all the trichomes off. With all those bud points it was a chore just to get the plant off the screen so i could trim it up.


Chicken wire = 1" diameter hole,..... Durban poison buds = 2" diameter. :confused:


My new set up uses garden fence with 2x3" rectangles,.... not as good for training stretch, but come harvest day I'll be able to hack the stem and drop the plant down out of the screen without much trauma to the buds :pimp:
