I travel for business, I may go to a country where doing drugs are legal. That being said, suppose I was on probation, or tested for drugs at work, even if I did not do drugs in this country, how can they hold that against you?

Most states have no laws about employers, so that is null, but if I am on a program or some probation (not that I am) but how can it violate the probation if I was in a place where it was legal to smoke?

I would have to say that regardless of where you consume your drugs, you are still violating the terms of your probation. Just because you are out of their jurisdiction doesn't mean you don't have to abide by probation. I would say that if you came back to the US and tested positive, you'd be screwed.

Usualy if your on probation you have to be given permission to leave the state? So depends. But like was said above regardless of where you do the drugs it will be in direct violation with the rules of your probation.

not that I am on probation, but I guess they could limit you use of alcohol and since that is already legal, I guess they F ya one way or the other.

I was working in Amsterdam, and while my company (recruitment) didn't do drug screenings, others did (these were large international corporations). I always wondered what would happen if you were living in Amsterdam and tested positive for cannabis. Even though it's 'legal' (actually more like 'tolerated') to smoke there, once you step outside the tourist zone it's still a somewhat taboo topic, and quite frowned upon by the white collar folks. But those people sure do love their beer, wine and spirits. :wtf:

For companies it's all about the insurance policies, and these policies say that they are null and void if you use illegal substances. Can't really prove when you did it, but they can prove that it's in your system. [Tinfoil hat time!->] Insurance and big pharma are in bed together, is this really surprising?

I'd say if you're on probation, your screwed (not that you'd be allowed to go to Amsterdam anyways)...
