My husband and I will be moving to Colorado soon. He does not want to grow his own meds. He just wants to be able to go to a dispensary and obtain his meds. However, he'd like to shop around before he does this. Does he need to choose a caregiver before he gets the card or can he shop around first?

If this allowed under the new rules? It's all so confusing.

Also, how long will he need to be a resident to obtain a card? He clearly qualifies, he has ms and suffers horrible spasms.

Thanks!

You can get a card immediately. All you need is proof of residency, which can take many forms and is obtainable immediately when you move.

Your husband can shop at any medical marijuana center, whether or not you name a caregiver or a primary center. I don't see any reason to shop around before your husband gets his card. I think most people get their cards first and then shop around until they find a MMC or a caregiver they like. Also, patients can purchase from any or all sources, not only his caregiver, if he assigns one. If a center employee or caregiver tells him otherwise, stay away from them!

Well you can apply immediately but expect to wait a few months before you actually get your card. Before mailing out your application & doctor recommendation, make a couple copies. Those copies are going to be what you use in dispensaries/etc...

I would recommend NOT assigning a caregiver, at least not at first. You can always assign one later if you find a place/someone you really like.

Also make sure you have copies of your medical records to bring with you to your doctor's appointment. The doctors are getting stricter with requiring them. It sounds like your husband will definitely qualify, but just cover your bases and bring in copies of his records & current meds.

Thank you so much! Great advice and very much appreciated! Yea, hubby is a quad with ms so I don't think he'll have any issues. He is a vet so he'll have to see a civilian doctor but his records are filled with him using medical cannabis and reducing many of his meds because of it. He went from 55 pills a day to now 27 a day. How awesome is that? Here in Illinois we can't get these reps to understand the benefit, so conservative. :wtf:

check again laws have changed in July ...you must show an existing relationship with your DR. the are saying 2 yrs with a proven medical problem...it was very easy to get your card now they are cracking the whip

In Colorado, anyone who wishes to possess marijuana for medical use must obtain a Medical Marijuana Registry identification card from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment: Medical Marijuana in Colorado11 Cards can be obtained by submitting the following to the state:

1.A completed New/Renewal Application for Identification Card.Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment: New/Renewal Applications and Instructions for patients over age 18 12
2.A copy of your Colorado driver's license or ID card.Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment: New/Renewal Applications and Instructions for patients over age 18
3.A non-refundable $90 application fee (check or money order made out to CDPHE).Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment: New/Renewal Applications and Instructions for patients over age 18
4.The physician certification form completed and signed by a doctor licensed to work in Colorado.Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment: New/Renewal Applications and Instructions for patients over age 18

Items should be sent to Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Medical Marijuana Registry; HSVRD-MMP-A1; 4300 Cherry Creek Drive South; Denver, Colorado 80246-1530. There is a different application form for patients under 18.Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment: New/Renewal Applications and Instructions for patients under age 18 13

As of March 2010, walk-up applications are not reviewed immediately due to the high volume of applications. Only sealed envelopes will be accepted.http://www.cdphe.state.co.us/release/2010/032510.pdf14

when you get here, you should get in touch. I can be reached at another mj related forum under the same username. (don't post contact info here, against rules)

I can point you to good places. with a condition that debilitating, there are some non-profit caregivers that will take extra good care of him.

Tell your husband thank you for serving.

In addition, I could not help but comment on your husbands condition. I cannot imagine what he must experience each day in regards to finding pain relief. He went from 55 pills to 27 a day! Yesterday, I had a bad headache that took me out for the day, which is nothing in comparison to what he experiences.

I wish you and hubby the absolute best in Co.

Warm Regards
Jack

While the vast majority of caregivers in Colorado will claim to be 'for the patient', nearly zero caregivers are actually non-profit.

Use this forum and other Colorado MMJ forums to find the caregivers who actually give a shit. Don't use craigslist or the first person you find.

It's very difficult moving forward, for caregivers to have large scale grows. When you get your Colorado MMJ card, have your husband request an 'edible' recommendation, which is a recommendation from the Colorado Dept. of Health stating you can have more than the 6plant/2oz max stated under Amendment 20. Once you have your increased plant reco, then you shop your patient rights (increased plant count) to the type of caregiver you need.

Moving forward, caregivers are capped at 5 patients. They will likely prefer 5 patients who have increased plant counts (up to 99? I'm not sure) instead of regular 6plant patients. But, caregivers who are non-profit and actually taking care of sick people instead of potheads probably won't care about plant count.

I guess my point is, be careful, contact someone like copobo. I don't know him/her, but he seems like a legit contact, or at least someone who knows people who can take care of a legit patient.

Thanks to your hubby for serving, good luck.

edit: I'm sure people will be quick to point out if I am in-accurate. I don't stand behind anything I say. Things are changing by the day, so if I am wrong, I would hope to be corrected, for your sake.

Respect. Good God >>>>>>RESPECT<<<<<<

Stories such as yours bring a tear to my eye. Your husband has given SO MUCH and asks so little. WTF is WRONG with our society?

When are you coming? Please let folks know. Your husband shouldn't have to BUY meds from the dispensary!

nope. Ugh ugh. No way. That just wouldn't be right, IMO.

Sorry to be so late checking back in. Thanks so much, you have made us feel welcome and we for sure will get in touch with you when we move. We can't make it out there until our son graduates college in May next year. But after that it's on!

I am concerned, are you serious, two years to get a card?? One only has to look at Jim and know he is in pain and suffers daily.

You can become legal right away once the doctor signs the recomendation you are legal. You only have to wait for the RED card that long. They will give you temporary paper work to use until that time comes. However there is a lot of fraud going on because of the back log and the ease of just copying the paper work they give you. They already had many cases because of this and added more staff and pumped a couple more million into getting caught up. They will be processing more paper work quicker now and of course the more they do the better they get. The Department of Revenue is who handles this now if i remember correctly.

Give thanks to your husband for his service and i am sorry he is suffering so much.

The two years wait that went into effect July 1 (I think) is for those who wish to open a dispensary or what is now called a Medical Marijuana Center (MMC for short). I haven't read, hear or seen anything that states a patient must wait two years (though that might be how long it takes for one to receive their card - but you can still medicate in the meantime)

Thanks so much! That sounds more reasonable. OK, another one. How much per month is a patient allowed? I ask this because of your law changes. Two ounce a month? Here in Illinois it will be only one ounce a month. Don't even get me started on this law that may pass, very very strict and probably will be the strictest of all.

As a patient you are legally allowed to posess up to 2 ounces, there is no monthly limit. A patient could go every day and get two ounces if they wanted.
