View Full Version : Best Musician in your opinion
Well lets hear who you think is the best musician talent wise.
My idea is Prince by a long shot. The dude is unique its like he has his own music genre. Not to add the guy can play practiaclly every damn instrument amazingly and writes all his own shit.

Not a bad choice among pop (fusion) music stars. It IS impressive when he runs from instrument to instrument jamming out solos during his shows. But for me, there is something to be said for a musician who unquestionably MASTERS an intstrument (including voice) in such a way that you hear their "stamp" anytime, in anything they play.
I;ll throw up a name or two, but first some clarifications- only LIVING musicians, right? And you are including pure composers also? (if so, you would have to weigh a kind of subjective composition + performance ability vs. pure composition vs pure performance etc).
Living or dead just your idea of ANY musician you think is note worthy

Jaco Pastorius. The guy single handedly re-invented what can be done with the bass guitar, and was, as all great musicians can proudly call themselves, an innovator.
But if it has to be someone who is still alive, Herbie Hancock; also one of the greatest innovators.
Incidently, Prince was the first ig I ever saw. Shitme, that was some bar to beat!

i gotta admit...ludacris is a very talented artist, he has a hell of a way with words, unlike ayone else, but musically id say either david grohl or alvin lee, alvin lee is a spectacular guitar player, and david grohl went from being an all-star drummer in Nirvana, to the lead singer AND guitar player of Foo Fighters....he knows alot of insturments and has good vocals

Mozart. He performed all his piano concerti and violin concerti and was known was an expert improviser. I know that there are no recordings of his playing, but who cares. There still exist reviews of his playing, and they endlessly praise him And come on, anyone who could write the most intelligent and poignant music known to mankind probably knew a thing or two about playing.

Guitar: John McLaughlin - The guy is freakin' amazing. Not only can he play, he can write, he can improvise, he can do wierd and freaky things with distortion...
Saxophone: John Coltrane - I played the sax for a while in high school, and I came to revere this man as a god. Most inspired, and inspiring, music, not to mention the innovation...
Bass: Jaco Pastorius, for reasons mentioned above
Drums: Billy Cobham - he played with John McLaughlin in the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and the guy can do some wonderful things... One of the only drummers who actually USES the double bass drums, they're not just there for show :D

Paul McCartney. He's a virtuoso in guitar, bass, piano, and voice, and he can also play drums pretty well (That's him playing drums on "Back in the U.S.S.R.", because Ringo quit the Beatles for a short time). His first solo album, "McCartney" features him playing every instrument -- every sound you hear on the album is made by Paul.

Any single person being the "best" musician is absolutly impossible. In music a piano virtuoso is equal to the drunken ass playing off key harmonica at open mic night at the local bar. It's all in how the feelings and intentions of the artist resonate with the feelings and intentions of the listener. So instead of writting who's best, I'm going to write some musicians that are important to me.
JS Bach- Organ virtuoso, standardized many aspects of modern musical notation, helped pioneer tempered tuning. Without Bach music would be a very different place.
Beethoven- I could put any number of composers in this spot from Midieval times to now, but I love the drama of Beethoven's music.
I was led to classical music by my interests in some of the great music I was around when I was a younger kid (in my parents record collections, not anything from my time). Here are a few of those.
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer- Three amazing instrumentalists playing amazing music. If you have never heard them you should check some of they music out. You'd be amazed by how much ass a drum, bass, and keyboard trio can kick.
Jimmy Page- I always thought of Jimi Page as a true master of making a deep rock record. Led Zeppelin always seemed in touch with the deeper parts of music.
There are so many more and I could go on for days.

Jerry Garcia. He played Banjo, Guitar, Dobro, Piano, Fiddle, and on his Garcia CD he playes all the instruments except the drums. He was the master.
Millions and millions of people around the world would follow this musical leader where ever he went. People would hitchhike across the country for a chance to see him play. They would sleep outside, in cars, in vans, etc etc , all for a chance to see Jerry. One other thing.... He would not sell-out. You will never see a Grateful Dead song being used to get you to buy a car, a tv, a house, etc etc etc. He was asked by Senators to play concerts are told them no. He did things his way. Kudos to you Jerry. We miss you here in San Francisco and we will always love you and your music for eternity.

Finally somebody said Zappa. I don't know if I'd say he's the best guitarist but he was an incredible musician. He played just about every instrument imaginable and wrote everything from his standard wacky rock to jazz to classical symphonies. Incredibley creative and not just out to make some hit song that will be all the rage troday and forgotten tomorrow (like may others mentioned in this thread)

Hey Daima, funny you mention Jerry not selling out. Just wondering what you think about some of this stuff coming out now. Like the other day I saw Jerry Garcia Tea and wine. And the ties were cool at first, when it really was about him and his artwork, but now they're still coming out with new ones 11 years after his death. Pity how somebody who fought so hard not to sell out while he was alive is being sold out after his death.

Garcia was selling his art work on his ties years before his death. His family now controls his name. His daughter and his x-wife are somewhat greedy.
His family now takes his art work and exploits it and makes mechandise from it that really stinks. I have a few of the earlier ties.
As for Zappa? great guy with lots and lots of talent. Joe's Garage was a hoot.
Both artists were a huge contribution to those around them and to the world.

Jeff Magnum of Neutral Milk Hotel.
Amazing songwriter, he may not be the best musician, or have the best voice, but he's Bob Dylanesque in that way. What lack of talent he has, he makes it up in using his voice as an instrument, for his soothing, puzzling, conceptual, and beautiful lyrics:
From an accoustic classic "Two-Headed Boy." One of my favorite songs of all time.
Two Headed Boy. All floating in glass. The sun it it pass, now it's blackerthan black, I can hear as you tap on your jar. And I am listening to hear where you are. I am listening to hear where you are. Two Headed Boy. Put on sunday shoes. And dance around the room to accordian in peace. With a needle that sings in your heart. Catching signals that sound in the dark, catching signals in that sound in the dark....we will take off our clothes and they'll be placing fingers through the notches in your spine, and when all is breaking, everything that you could keep, beside now your eyes ain't moving now, they just lay in their clouds....Two headed boy. With pulleys and weights. Creating a radio play just for two. In the parlor with a moon across her face. And through the music he sweetly displays, silver speakers that sparkle all day, made for his lover who's floating and
choking with her hands across her face......and in the dark, We will take off our clothes and they'll be placing fingers through the notches in your spine and when all is breaking everything that you could keep beside now your eyes ain't moving now, they just lay there in their clouds.....two headed boy,
there's no reason to grieve, the world that you need is wrapped in gold silver sleeves, left beneath christmas trees in the snow, and I will take you and leave you alone, watching spirals of white softly float, over your eyelids and all you did we'll wait until the point when you let go...ai de de...

XTC your not far of the mark when you mention Prince this man can play up to 17 instruments at high quality levels. But imo there is no better than Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd who rate as the best musicians the world has ever seen. These bands have proved over many years that they are gifted without a doubt.
