Simple Fish tank setup to start out?

Would it be possible to start growing a small plant inside of say, a hex-shaped 5-gallon vertical-type aquarium? I was thinking just for ease of lighting and containing heat, then transplanting into a larger area..

Any thoughts?

Depends what kind of light you use it might contain too much heat
