So I need to figure out the best way to tell my parents that I use mmj.. I used to smoke mj and none of my family knew, now that I am a mmj patient, I dont want it to be awkward and have to sneak around to use my medicine.... I am 19 and I live with my dad who is a high ranking officer in the military, what is the best way to talk to him about this? We have talked about mj before, but he has said he has never tried it, and that was about it... He knows that I have bad insomnia and other problems, but using mj was never a thing we talked about... I want to be able to tell him and not have to hide it.. What is the best way to do that? Thanks

1) Gauge your parents' feelings about marijuana. Are they strongly against it? Did they smoke it themselves at one point in time? This can help you gear your talk to them.

2) Talk to a few trusted role models and friends to sort out what you will say before telling your parents.

3) Preface your discussion with "There's something I want to tell you because I know you want me to be honest with you." It's also good to pick a "good day" to tell them. If your dad got laid off from his job, you should probably put it off for a week or two.

4) Be prepared for the initial shock or rejection of your parents, but realize that the fact that they may not condone your past/present behavior doesn't mean they love you any less.

5) Have accurate information on hand for their questions. Let them know you are aware of the health risks, and show them the medical facts about marijuana. Many people are surprised to find out that in 1974 in Richmond, Virginia the DEA shut down an experiment at the Medical College of Virginia which, although originally started to prove that marijuana caused cancer, consistently demonstrated that MARIJUANA REDUCED AND IN SOME CASES COMPLETELY ERRADICATED PREVIOUSLY TERMINAL CANCEROUS TUMORS BY MEANS OF DIRECT THC INJECTION. In addition, marijuana also did not cause any bodily or brain damage when it was given to healthy test subjects over the course of a series of tests.

6) Tell them your personal reasons for using marijuana. Encourage them to do their own research about the medicinal value of marijuana as well as its brain-protecting properties. If they value individualism, they will be concerned about your over-all usage of illegal AND legal drugs for health and welfare reasons rather than on the basis of misleading sensationalism and manipulation of the media's portrayal of illegal drugs.

7) Make sure to tell them that you understand that Marijuana is a drug, and like alcohol, tobacco, pharmaceuticals, and like any other substance-- even food, it must be consumed with conscientious moderation meaning only after researching it's effects, potential side effects, addictiveness, and making sure the drug actually has a practical application to help fix a physical or mental condition-- as drugs should be combined with human assistance/therapy to provide the best possible plan for recovery

Very well put. Tough thing for you military brat! I was one too, and your father can lose his rank, if you fuck up. Military bases are FEDERAL, you do BIG time and take it in the ass all day! So my two cents...Keep it on the low, until you move out. No other option, in my mind. Even though you are legal by state constitutional amendments, you get caught on federal property holding...bad news. Respect your family, over habit my dude! Good luck, Im no hater, I walked a similar line in my life.

Just wanted to let anyone else know thats curious, I stopped by the dispensary and talked to them about the military and prop 215 in CA, and they said that as long as you do not get a drivers license or state ID that says you are a patient of MMJ, there is no way they can find out. If you just get the card from your doctor, its not on your 'medical records', only the records at the doctors office. So just dont tell the military about that doctor and they'll never know. He was told that straight from his recruiter

Just talk to your dad....he may be in a tough spot because of his position in the military. But at the same time, you have been prescribed to use cannabis, so there are no laws being broken.

If he cant accept it, then maybe you should consider moving out on your own. I know that is easier said than done, but it is your life and you have to make decisions based on what's best for you.

I think that, unless you live on your own...don't bring it up. Ultimately you know your father better than anyone else. You might actually be surprised by his response.

I've smoked off and on since I was 15, but I decided not to tell my mom, even as a teenager. I kept it out of her house and didn't smoke at her house. I let her figure it out on her own, and she did. Last year she asked me to take her down to get her own card, and that pretty much paved the way to discussion but I never imposed it on her. I let her come to me. I figured it was my business, and I don't owe anybody an explanation.

You have me confused. Does the recruiter also work at the dispensary?

If you're not on a military base I'd just vape up after dinner some night.

I was in a similar spot as my father is a high ranking navy officer. There is no way your dad can find out about your mmj use unless you tell him yourself. Dont go to a recruiter for information, he would be more than willing to tell you whatever you need to hear to get you to sign your name on the dotted line..... Your father can not be your caretaker, he can not handle your medicine, grow your medicine.....nothing...He is payed federally and the law is federal...your dad is owned federally. If you live with him or on a military base I would suggest keeping it on the low...Get your own place and you wont have no worries....

You would be surprised how your Dad may react!

A lot of military people are pro MJ and/or used to be smokers...

If your Dad is a high ranking enlisted man, than he has seen what alcohol and other drugs can do to people, because of his experience with his own troops.

You're not a kid anymore, you're a man and you're making a decision that you feel is best for you; I'm sure Dad will come around eventually, even if he doesn't support you right away.

That is true..anything on Federal property is a no-no!!!! No state law/ license can/will overrule Federal laws on any military post.

Dude.
Don't worry about preperation or any of that.
Just tell him what you do, why and how much it has improved your problems. Sounds scary, but its really best to be blunt. Be sure to offer to help him research the medicine from NON BIASED websites.
