Hey all, this is a pic of a breed of mine I call RMT. It is about 4-5 days from amber, cloudy now. Regardless, this is the only plant I have that does this on the top of the cola at the end of life, starts at about the 5th week in flower, maybe 6th. I think this is as good or better than White Widow.
Not that this bothers me, but I am curious if it indicates anything other than an unusual phenotype? Any knowledge? Any theories?

Looks like little hops buds.
But seriously, it looks like the bud tip could have been fimmed either mechanically or chemically. Did you top the colas? Do you start using any additives from, say, 3 or 4 weeks into flower?
Is this the only strain that does this, or do other strains do the same, but to a lesser extent?
Weird but cool, lol. As long as after smoking it, it doesn't grow you another nipple or something...

The strain that I am growing does this, but not quite as much. It happens even if I don't top/fim, I do use bloom enhancers, Bloombastic last grow and Cannaboost this grow.
Nice looking strain/cola btw. :)

No no topping on that. Just the way it grows at the end. Just the Molasses Rusty.

You don't live next to a nuclear reactor, do ya? Or perhaps under some high-tension power lines? :D

LOL, no but they say we have a lot of Radon gas here.
It is just this one plant that does it, part of the characteristics of the phenotype I guess. Just never, ever seen one do this and this one does it every time. :smokin:

I have no idea unfortunately. I grew the same strain cuttings last grow and it was really nice, but the guy who owns the mothers doesn't know what strain it is. I know you can never be 100% certain, but I think it is part WW.

haha....that should be a rule of thumb with most things in life!

I have a strain that tends to develop colas like that too. I too use bloombastic.

Found out what and why.
The phenomenal growth pattern is called "donkey ears" and my source is Greg Green's book about breeding. He had a picture of dried ones, and then I knew what it was, as of course I have some dried ones..
The event is a sativia trait coming out during the flowering process.
I lost the RMT strain, but my Strawberry Cough does the same thing.

My Blueberry does that in the last 2 weeks. Pretty F'n cool, just flowers coated in trichomes! :pimp:
Donkey ears huh? If it's a sativa trait, why then do I notice it so pronounced on my Blueberry which should be 80% indica? And not on my Durban which is like 90% sativa? :wtf:
Wish I had pics, :(

My boss has a few strains. Unfortunately when he got into growing, a friend gave him a bunch of plants, when his house nearly burnt down. After getting the plants, my boss lost track of what ANY of them actually are!!:wtf3:
Just after he finally got a group flowered, he found a strain that did this all the way up the buds (bottom up) in LONG strips (some three inches +):wtf:. The plant that did it was HUGE by the time he flowered (5'+). However put out very little weight. Thus each bud cluster was a pain to trim and produced very little.
Oddly these "Donkey ears" were quite effective. PLUS you could just pull one of these two inch "ears" off a bud and role it AS IS!!
Being such a pain to trim the strain he stopped growing it. Whatever it was is gone now.

i'v always called that "fox tailing" --a sign of overly ripe flowers imho. in some verities/phenos under lights the flower structure will become fully mature before the trichs age to amber.

Bully: Over ripe, not if the trichs haven't changed color. Read, learn. As CanniW notices it in the last 2 weeks, I have seen it as early as at 4 weeks into flower depending on the phenotype.
Canni...I have no flipping idea. I assume it is just a tiny trait of the sativa that comes. I shall see with this Thai, never had a truer sativa in my garden. One little DNA change is all it apparently takes. One link in the whole chain.
I humbly plead stupidity about that part.

LOL! It's all good, just kinda odd.
I'm looking forward to the Thai,... hows she doing?

I try to live my life thru a few simple philosophy's, one is to try and learn something new every day.
Thanks W'Wonder, today I learned that growth pattern is know as "donkey ears".
It is a result of a chemical defect in the plant. The auxim that normally controls lateral side branching of the stalk is present in the growing tip of the flower, causing it to grow the flower or bud laterally.
Very interesting "interesting growth". :)

Bully: Over ripe, not if the trichs haven't changed color. Read, learn. interesting comment---i do so love to read and learn-- god forbid that i reach a point where i think i know it all--maybe i didn't make myself clear---the cola is deteriorating [becoming fluffy, stretching] and approaching death .the fox tailing [aka "donkey ears"] is evidence of this.cola maturity and trich ambering are two diffrent things imho.
As CanniW notices it in the last 2 weeks, I have seen it as early as at 4 weeks into flower depending on the phenotype. could be--cannabis is full of surprises.it's one of the reasons i love growing it.BTW i always look forward to your pics.you have some beautiful plants

Thanks to you both. I was in a pretty rotten mood yesterday.
Now I need to go learn what auxim is/does.
CannaJust stretching along.
OMIs this specific to the sativa trait in your knowledge base? Only very specific strains do this. Am I correct in assuming this is what I should expect for tops on Thai?

Auxins are plant hormones.
Did your strains do this before you started using the VGI? (vertical growth inhibitor)
canniwhatsis

I have never used any VGI, I haven't had a really huge donkey ear growth, but I've certainly seen this growth pattern in late flowering.
Pic 1: Blueberry; still has 2 weeks to go and already starting to see some "Donkey Ear" growth.
Pic 2: Is from my last run of Durban poison, there's a little bit of something happening near the tip of the bud, but not so sever. :wtf:

Nope and VGI has no effect on it either....Heck, I don't mind they are very tasty.
Yes, my Strawberry Cough does it every time, almost every cola, starts about 4th week and continues until ripe.
