So, I really hope someone out there can help me out here. I'd been considering getting a vaporizor for awhile now due to all the great benefits you guys talk about and economical reasons...So, I purchased the iolite at the smoke shop for $200. After 2 weeks of trial and error, youtube tutorials, calls to the shop, etc. I still cant get this thing to work. This is my first vaporizer and I'm afraid I'm just terribly missing the concept here and I'm hoping one of you out there can tell me what i'm missing! So, after its filled with butane I light the thing and allow it to go through 2 or 3 "heating cycles" I then place the herb in the bowl piece, allow it to sit another cycle or so then inhale? I get nothing...and I mean nothing. I can tell its heating as it does get fairly warm. Should I be moistening my mixture? Initially I wasnt, then a girl at the shop I purchased from advised me thats what I was doing wrong. I tried that and still nothing. I'm afraid of wasting my stuff on this thing!! I was so excited about getting this. Thought it would be economical, and easy to use on my way to work, lunch break etc.

Go back to the shop and inform that girl that she told you just the opposite of what you should be doing. Your bud should NOT be moist. It should be dry and finely ground.

Would you say the bowl should be packed fairly tight or loose? Does the quality of butane make a big difference?

Bud should be packed fairly loose. The more surface area that the heat is exposed to, the better. And yes, quality butane does make a difference. Try 5 times refined Vector Butane.

Quite right. And to my surprise, the quality of butane is rather important with this particular vape. I'm also rather surprised at how rare quality butane is here out in the sticks. Friggen ridiculous.
I'm thinkin your biggest problem is the moisture. You want your weed good and dry for this little baby, bro. Actually for all vaporizers, I believe.

Maybe thats it *I hope*...i just picked up some cheap butane from a convienence store, but the goods i've been practicing with have been FABULOUS quality by any other method...shew...i've GOT to figure this out. I'm a fairly intelligent woman believe it or not lol....wish someone in my circle of life knew about this shit....okay if there's any of you good people out there who can come show me how to use this i will share all my stuff with you ;)

If you bought it locally, take it back and tell 'em it's never worked for you. I know for a fact that the company that makes it wants resellers to stand behind the product. Not saying you'll get service from the shop, but it's worth a try. Failing that, contact the company. They have service centers now.

Sorry to hear you have been having troubles with your Iolite, I have one and it is my main smoking device.
Sounds like you have tried it extensively, but just a few thoughts from my experience with the piece.
The majority of the time I do not get visible vapor after taking hits but still get the full effects.
As others have said the higher quality butane does seem to make a fairly large difference but even if it is cheaper butane it should still work in my experience.
Generally when going to a vape session with the Iolite I'll load it up and let it heat up for a cycle and then start hitting it, I usually hit it for 10-20 minutes.
Good luck trying to get it to work it definitely has a bit of a learning curve to it.

doesnt "vapor" = the moisture + active ingredients + plant essence of the herb?
from my experience, dry buds do not produce as pleasant an experience as moist herbs.
It could also be because the iolite has no temperature control so youre just vaping at god knows what temperature.
I would avoid the iolite at all costs. All the effort that goes into using the unit is not returned in delicious vapes.
Buyer beware

Yeah, when you smoke it wet. Otherwise "vapor" = active ingredients + plant essence of the herb.
You notice that little piece that comes with the iolite for vaping moist herb??? It's there for a reason.
I think the iolite is pretty steady at 220 c.
You go ahead and suck down whatever soggy herb you like with whatever vape you prefer to use and I'll keep my iolite around. I actually like it although admittedly it does have it's limitations.

Buyer bewareWater content vaporizes before the active compounds. Moist herb just means it take longer to vape, since the moisture has to go first.
No temp control? I think a fixed temp qualifies as a temp control.
iolite specs:
Length 102mm
Width 25mm
Breadth 64mm
Weight (empty) 81g
Operating time Up to 120 min
Operating temp 190C
Wattage (equivalent) 125W
Refill time (typical) 10 seconds
Approval / Quality standards ISO:9000-2001
Bowl capacity 500mg/0.5g
I've owned and used an iolite since Vaporstore started taking pre-orders in the fall of '08. Haven't had any problems (although it's not as reliable as simpler models), and I've thoroughly enjoyed mine for portable use.
I think the iolite is pretty steady at 220 c.190. You won't find a fixed temp vape that's set much higher than that.

Wow. I wasn't even close. I guess with that short of a draw- at 220 the iolite would blister your tongue!

Adding vape tubing is very popular with the iolite. Some on-line dealers started including a length of tubing with every unit. I use the mouthpiece extension at least, and a short piece of tubing as well, unless I misplace it, which seems to be a frequent occurance. Tubing can greatly improve the stealth aspect too.

using the iolite does take a lil practice, but once it's achieved I'm sure you will find it very willing to be an excellent source for you. I had to get used to mine, and here's the only thing I can pass along. Use decent butane fuel, I use Zippo here and so far's served me well, did at first get some expensive stuff from the Headshop, but it failed on me quickly and nothing more aggravating than not having the right equipment for a good toke session. Supposedly I think there is a moisture chamber included in the iolite, whether it's there to keep it moist or to absorb I'm not so sure, I can't read the handbook it came with, fine print and all that's my problem, wonder if anyone else had that problem?. i let it heat up a cycle or two and use the extension (for stealth it's good). I can taste it but don't get any residue to exhale, but have noticed once it's going well, and if a person draws on it long, there is some exhaled breath? or?. Gets a good buzz going for me, and i chose the portable because igniting my herb wasn't healthful for my lungs anymore....my kids said...'mom you're just gonna have to quit'...and i'm like....'ah not in your life time or mine' lol
'nother thing, before i actually read thru the instructions that i could read lol, i realized that i didn't have to keep clicking it to light, it stayed lit or lit up after just a click or two....but i was anxious and wanted to 'get right on it'
peace and hope all's well
