Blazin' up on some Mango Kush :jointsmile: So here it goes..

I have a 9x7x10 room which I recently decided to try my first grow! I had a question regarding the lighting sources for vegetative/flowering stages.

Here is what I am trying to do. I know I have room for more but since I am a newbie at this I'm starting off at 8 plants.

I plan on getting a 400w HPS light.

* Would I be better off getting a florescent for the vegetative stage ?
* Will this light suffice the vegetative and flowering stage ?
* Will the 400hps be sufficient enough for 8 plants or should I downsize to 6

Thank you for your input and sorry for being a newbie! I have been reading posts but there are a lot of things I do not know so be patient with me I learn quick when told the right information!

Okay! I found a really good post about lighting apparently a florescent light on the high end spectrum would be good for the vegetative stage. So that moves me onto another question..

If I buy a florescent light what size would I need to get 6 to 8 plants through the vegetative stage ? OR would I be better off getting a 400w HPS light and using it for both stages ?

ok..my suggestion is to look at some LED lighting for veg and then the LED can be used as supplemental lighting during flower...just get good LED lights and both you and your plants will be happy...floros are ok but a good LED light will outperform the best floro setup any day of the week :thumbsup:

As a first time grower do you think the LED lighting is a good idea for me ? From the things I've read it seems people have more consistent results using some sort of HID lighting compared to LED's ?

If you would please be so kind to tell me what kind of LED to use to grow about 8 plants and how much it would cost ? Or an ruff estimate works too!

yes...actually much easier than HID or floro...the LED's hit the main spectrum for making photosynthesis...much of the light produced by other sources is wasted and is only visible to the human eye plus no heat issues and bulbs to change with LED lights :jointsmile:

take a look at this thread :thumbsup:

Great stuff. It seems the LED's have HID's beat with a stick in the long run. Cheaper on your electric bill, runs a lot cooler and no bulbs to change like you said. I was just starting to understand a little about how the ratio of light worked with HID's to plants. Looks like I need to read into more about LED's.

The things is I've seen a lot of people say they did not or were not having luck with LED's or the UFO's (same thing?)

What would you think I would need to get to be equivalent to the power of a 400w or 600w HID in an LED's ?
* Edit * I found this info. Do you think it holds true ?

A comparison of power consumption for equivalent growth capability of LED vs. HSP/MV:

* 90 Watt LED ~ 225 Watt HPS/MV
* 120 Watt LED ~ 400 Watt HPS/MV
* 300 Watt LED ~ 650 Watt HPS/MV
* 600 Watt LED ~ 1200 Watt HPS/MV

And the veg/flower stage how does that work then ? Is there a dial on the LED lights that you change for the flowering ? Haha I prob' sound like idiot.

Im not an LED grower, but i can tell you that you go 12/12 with the LED's to flower them. So, the led's do the entire grow for ya, but Str8 knows the led's well, so your in good hands:hippy:
