can someone tell me if i need to grind up my larger than pea size buds making bubble hash before i blend it? what if the buds are pinky nail size?

Its best to use buds still wet too. Just trimmed bud. If you grind it you will end up having leaf matter in your hash.
Here is how I make my bubble:
I use fresh trim then cure the hash
for full melt:
I use only fresh close trim and buds. NO fan leaves (unless they are loaded with trichomes). I do not use a drill. I only lightly stir with a spoon for about 5 to 10 minutes. Then I let it settle for 20 to 30 minutes. I do not yield much this way but with many strains I can get full melt.
for good bubble (no melting just bubbles):
same as above but I use a drill or hand blender. I always yield way more this way but it just will not melt, but it bubbles real nice.

What I usually do is, first run aim for quality full melt then second run aim for quantity and just make bubble. Everyone has there own hash style. This is what I do and it works great for me. I love making hash.
