View Full Version : STRAND? WTF?

When did we start referring to STRAINS as strands? When did we put aside our education and forget about proper terminology? Why do dispensaries use sex to advertise their products like at the cannabis convention? Why does every one complain that the government does not take us seriously? How could they when we can not act professional and speak properly? I have never seen a pharmaceutical company use girls in provocative attire to sell their poison, is that not who we are competing with? So I ask all WTF?

SO I ASK YOU AGAIN WTF?
I have been a patient and caregiver since it all started in the state, I still have my first card #000035, and I have been care giving for just as long. I have weathered all the changes and I can honestly say out of all the dispensaries in this state only 5% are actually doing it right and professionally.
Just wanted to rant about this, all opinions welcome, but remember what they say about opinions.

I apologize for my previous uses of the word strand. It's just that I usually type from my "smart" phone that doesn't recognize strain and it will automatically put in the closest spelling word that it has on file..because it's..you know....smart?

Haha, I've seen the term "strand" used pretty frequently on the board.
I thought it was a typo. :)

Ha, CraigsList is the worst, all these dispensaries typing like 12 year-old girls in CAPS with horrible spelling... And yeah, I've seen "strand" too many times to count. It always knocks them down a peg to me when I see that, I'm just less likely to stop by. One of them has a spelling error on their "sign" (it's a banner) -- "Remedy's of the Millenium". I ride past it coming home from work every day and see their $30 8th ads on CL but can't get past the sign haha...

A Mile High Alternative is just a few blocks south of there on the E side and they advertise 25/8th. No idea on quality or strain selection.

im guessing people should'nt take you serious just because of you're down falls either?
i can only wonder what our gov thought of these no good people.
people like, princess diana that dropped out of school at 16,thomas edison that had very very little schooling but was one of the most famous/productive inventors of all time.ben franklin did'nt make it past age 10 in school.oh yea that 1 guy...yea albert einstein was so bad in school he dropped out at age 15 then took a test to go back and had to take it acouple of times.i could go on and on about people that were great people that im sure mis spelled a word many times in their life times.
im guessing these people would'nt meet you're approval either.this thread was more to do with you're own ego and looking down at people than it was about our gov accepting us.

I would venture to say that the improper use of words stems from a combination of illiteracy, and ignorance. I credit learning institutions for this. The number of children graduating that are functionally illiterate has risen by leaps and bounds in the last 10 years. It seems to me that the schools don't even teach basic arithmetic anymore either. I guess the schools these days are overly occupied with being politicaly correct, and have to pass students on to the next grade regardless. Chalk up another one for the "no child left behind act"

this is true, but to gauge someones worth over a spelling test is also ignorance.to each their own...

Haha, who's judging their worth here? It just makes me laugh when someone spends money on a sign and it has bad grammar. How many business ads do you see that have tons of spelling errors or read like a text message? Just saying that it doesn't exactly lend itself to respect from the community at large when people see that sort of thing. It's not a value judgment, it's a simple contrast vs non-MMJ businesses, who for the most part have proof-readers for their signage and ads.
Someone could make quite a bit of money doing website design and taking product photos for dispensaries also... the websites are also very amateurish for the most part, and often very light on actual important info (menus/prices/services). Again not a value judgment -- growers are not web designers -- it would just help them appear more professional in the business community.

what i find funny about people that think this way is most of these people that think like this can hardly tie their own shoes so to speak.meanwhile the people that these people look down at that really can't even read 1 word can do 10 times more in their life than that person bitching about a mis spelled word.these people the "worker bees" are the ones that have the balls to do hard things in life.if it was'nt for these people those snobs would be living in the street opps i mean road no i mean woods as if not for these so called dum dums nothing would get done.it would all be left to the ones that know how to spell but don't know much past that.
i can't help to think as always everybody gets grouped into a lump when it is not so but thats human nature.there is a big diffrence between the lazy bums that go to school today and have the choice to learn but choose not to.compared to someone that stopped going to school to say schooling of another type like the family biz such as farming, building,so on.but as human nature goes people group everyone it to 1 group.there is a diffrence between a person that drops out of school at a young age for whatever reason but still goes on to learn what intrests them.compared to the ones that drop out because they are just that dumb and lazy bums that leech off the ones around them.
all to common in this country for some odd reason the ones that are the true bums people act as if they were born that way and need help.while the ones that do the right thing and work their asses off gets pushed to the side as if they are the dumb ones.we spend more time trying to correct the deadbeats than we do uplifting the good ones.all of which btw is due to our gov sticking their stuck up noses in the families biz.all of this started back in the 80's with the whole h.r.s bs taking the rights away from the parents.and on top of that pushing the dad to the back seat and giving all power to the woman.
so how has that effected us all? well it has taken the roots away from the family the rock, the base of a family unit.they have push the man away from the family.then at the same time they embrace the "single monther".so what ends up happening most of the time is the kids end up alone with the mom out doing here thing jumping from guy to guy"not all the time but most of the time"and the dad is told to stay away and pay 2 3rds of his already small ck to the mom most of which does'nt even go to the kid at all.so whats left? the streets and t.v.
ps contrary to this day and ages belief the dads role is to teach, guide, support, morals, self discipline so on with their kids the. moms role is to do the same but first to back and support her husband and show the love and nurture side of things.both are ment to back each other in their roles as parents. the man being the rock of the family with the woman being the support.

Talk about creating an argument out of nothing.
The OP isn't looking down at anyone, he's just pointing out that some people in the business don't know a lot about the business! I'm sorry, but if you don't know what a "strain" is then I'm probably not going to take further advice from you regarding herb. It doesn't matter if you went to school or not.
This is completely different from someone misspelling the word "Conessiur" or something on the board.
Then again like someone mentioned above, maybe a lot of people's smart phones are "creating" this strand-talk phenomena. I've seen it several times and I can't help but think most people know its "strain".

First, the post has not one thing to do with mis-spelling a word, or judging anyone on their spelling, second, it is not a matter of them liking us, it is a matter of gaining respect for who we are and what we know, and yes actions do speak louder than words, whether you like it or not. So when someone approaches me or puts up a sign referring to a strain as a strand I do tend to judge them on their lack of proper use of terminology. This is just my opinion, and thank you for yours.
P.S. Next time at least have the respect to ask me if you understand my opinion correctly before you refer to me as foolish and stuck up, it is obvious you read more into it than what was there or you just did not comprehend it, either way no worries.

I said it before, the post has not one thing to do with spelling or grammar. It has to with public in your face people referring to strains as strands, not the mis spelling of such. It is just not strands either, that was just an example, just like the sex in advertising, it does not belong in the medical end of this, recreation is fine just as all the hotties on the beer ads. Yes pharmaceutical companies reference to sex for e.d. but they do it tastefully. When I see doctors at a cannabis festival signing patients, that is just wrong, when I see folks barbecuing and drinking beer at a dispensaries grand opening it is wrong, when I see young women in basically thong shorts (although stimulating) trying to sell med mmj it is wrong. I guess I would have expected to see a lot more professionalism and higher standards in the med mmj scene. Along with this forum, i was under the impression it was for medical mmj, not recreation. I am all for the total legalization of all herb but the fact is that the medical end has got the ball rolling for that to happen so it needs to be treated as such or we just show that we are not true in our nature or our word, and that my friends is a fact. As far as the gov goes, it will be here long after we are gone, everyone bitches about it, and none of us agree with them, and they will most likely never change, so we must use their rules against them to get what we want, but we must do it tactfully and with respect, not like a bunch rebels, that obviously has never worked, and as long as you use the same tatics you will get the same results.
P.S. Hopefully we have gotten past the whole mis spelling issue now......lol

I think the OP is just trying to say that we should market MMJ is a more respectable manner. Especially since we are actually getting people to listen to us more than ever. Marijuana should not be sold by sex, it should be sold by truth of what this plant can do for people. Even on cancom....the naked girl with buds all over is plastered all over. I don't really see what the point of it is other than to attract men. But women smoke weed too....i am one of them....and I have never laid down and put herb all over my privates! haha! I do think if we stick to the facts and keep it about what Marijuana can offer medically and recreationally and focus on proving all the bullshit theories out there wrong....that is the best kind of promotion!
And at these conventions, they get scantilly clad dressed women to stand there to promote.....half of these chicks don't even toke and know nothing about the product. But men are visual creatures so that's what the do! I do agree that if we want to be taken seriously, we should keep the sex out of it. I think marijuana is one of the few products in this world that sells itself....just put pics of the beautiful buds!

I agree with you totally (and GOD do I hate that stupid fake weed ad with the naked girl with a passion). It makes me facepalm when I see sex being used to sell unrelated products, but it really irks me when it's something that should be selling itself like marijuana. Especially when we're in the midst of a very important movement that is helping hundreds of thousands of people with serious medical conditions, it's frustrating to see stuff like that. As a guy, I get more joy out of looking at a superb picture of some amazing meds than I do by seeing some dead-eyed girl paid to stand around in booty shorts with a pot leaf on them. That sort of thing is par for the course in many industries though, unfortunately... trade shows of almost any kind have the scantily-clad models, though car and electronics shows are probably the worst offenders there.
Especially with the "bro-bro" type of staff at many dispensaries, it's totally understandable that female MMJ patients are a bit turned off or hesitant to dive in head-first. I'm not surprised at all to see more "female friendly" dispensaries popping up... that's a good thing in my view. As a side note, a great female-friendly place that you might want to check out is Botanico at 31st and Larimer east of downtown... great all-female ownership, very nice and well-appointed shop, and very good meds (still capped at $50 I believe).
