Okay, I know that some people may read this and laugh at the stupidy of the questions, but nontheless here it is: Instead of putting heat lamps over a plant to keep it warm wouldn't it be okay to sit the planting pot on top of something like a heating pad...? Remember I am new at this and do not have a green thumb at all so all advice is greatly appeciated.

Yeah, people do it all the time with seedlings and rooting clones because the soil temp needs to be around 80 F for best success in those stages. In my experience it's the root-zone temp that needs to be kept warm, so it would be better with a heat mat underneath if you're concerned. I live in the desert so cold is almost never an issue, but with my outdoor plant now I put 1" styrofoam around the pot to insulate because she went outside when night temps were still occassionally dropping into the 40's. She's doing just fine!
