Hi Im new here just started the process of getting my MMJ card. I have been going to counseling for the last year dealing with PTSD from childhood trauma. I was diagnosed by the Executive Director of my counseling facilities with PTSD. I went to my Doc (who has been my Doc since I was born, Im 25 now), and he didn't even know Marijuana had been legalized for medicinal purposes! I had to educate him on it and then he said he wanted to put me on anti-depressants and that he would never prescribe MMJ for me. Then I realized that the person that diagnosed me is not even a psychiatrist. My Doc referred me to a phsyciatrist here in town. This psychiatrist actually practices in Durango, CO but travels here to Farmington once a week. My question is can this psychiatrist recommend me even though he is liscensed in CO. Any help would be much apprieciated

Any medical doctor (MD), doctor of osteopathy (DO) or nurse practitioner who can prescribe medicine in New Mexico can write a referral for the Medical Cannabis Program.
Medical Cannabis Program - Infectious Disease Bureau (http://www.health.state.nm.us/IDB/medical_cannabis.shtml)

My question isnt about the MD its about the psychiatrist I have been refered to. Since I am applying for MMJ for PTSD I must have an MD, DO, or Nurse Prac. prescribe as well as my diagnosis from a psychiatrist and the psychiatrist comes down from CO to New Mexico once a week. So would this psychiatrist's diagnosis be ok because they arent the one actually prescribing it?

The docs don't "prescribe" Cannabis for you, they may recommend it for you. You need his signed diagnosis along with notes documenting your condition, time in care, etc. Your primary doc must vouch for you on the app w/ his info on you. If the psych is seeing patients in NM it is assumed that he is licensed to do so in NM so his rec would be good. Unfortunately it sounds like you will have to run the gamete of pharms before your primary doc would even consider filling out the guts of the application for you, vouching. I'm 29 and I've taken 19 different pharmaceuticals in the last 11 years. For me I'm now being told that Cannabis is my last resort basically. It sucks balls man but it is the nature of the bastardy beast, the docs are totally out of tune, uneducated on the subject. There is hope though man and people on here w/ much more insight on how to go bout it, good luck.

I got my recommend from a Doc in Santa Fe with records from a Utah facility showing my PTSD diagnosis. I didn't have a single problem. I have my card in my wallet right now.

Wajomatik.....
Hang in there buddy! I am sorry for your PTSD....I really hope things work out for you during this period of finding a doc/waiting/approval/receiving meds.
As many of the folks here have stated previously, this takes a bit of time. Be persistent and patient.
Best of luck to you!!!!!:)
